only one company has ever used a external wastegate from the factory, it was audi. they put them on thier awd turbo cars...i found one...its...um...big

i need to adapt it to my 4 bolt flange, and find a way to cram it into what is quickly becoming a cluster of go fast bits

crawlerdan

got started on the down pipe, will finish it this weekend

crawlerdan

:yikes:  AHHH!!!  my bunghole is glowing!!!!

well- wastegates are VERY expensive, unless i get some cheap ebay garbage.
this is a super high quality OEM product, that i paid 6.99 for. thats why i use :D

im using a turbonetics blow off valve

what pipe?

the down pipe is gonna go...down, then under the truck and live there for a while.

the waste gate will live in the fender well, and vent to atmosphere....loudly

THK Matt

LOL will that pipe on the back of the turbo return to the IC?

:headscratch: no

the pipe on the back of the turbo is called a downpipe and it's basically the start of your exhaust...

could you imagine trying to push 6 cylinders of fury out of that little wastegate adapter haha

crawlerdan

well- if you think about it- the stock diam is 38mm, or about 1.3/8th inch

the tube is 1 3/4- so it will offer no restriction there

the waste gate in factory dress, is designed to oporate on an inline 5 cylender, puching 11.5 psi
i will have it on a 6 cyl at 5-7 psi.

i think it will be plenty effective

crawlerdan

that being said tanner- i test fit all of it tonight, it wont fit, so i will replace it later (the adapter) with a 2 inch 90 deg pipe that will allow the entire wastegate assembly to live in the wheelwell, where its out of the way

toyotanner

well that sucks you can't scrunch it in but maybe its better off being tucked away anyways

pumkin toy

so Dan you are obviously running an open dump pipe for your wastegate, why are you not connecting it to your downpipe?  just not in the right location, or dou you prefer an open dump pipe?

well, it will be easier to run open, but honestly, ive never run one open, and want to see what it sounds like...

I hope you invest in some heat shielding for that fire wall. It's gonna get hot with that Turbo.

my buddy had has an s2000 with an open dump pipe. honestly i dont like it because it seems like right when you start to really hear the turbo spoolin up and sounding pretty sick, the air rushing out of the wastegate takes over that sound. Then all you hear is a really loud kinda deep hissing sound.  i would rather hear the turbo!

i love oregon wheelin.

Wow... what a project! I love the open gates vs the recircs... that PHWOOOOSH is great when shifting. And it'll scare some Hondas too! I hope you have enough gears+engine to get it spooling enough to be loud; does that WG have an adjustable springs?

the PHWOOOOSH sound when shifting is from the blow off valve, not the wastegate. but yes there are recirculating BOV's and also wastegates can be connected to the exhaust so they arent so loud.

yes- it does have the ability to put different springs in for different release PSI . factory is set at 11.5psi
i can go down to 7-or as far up as 21.

the turbo is small enough to produce boost near idle- and max boost near 3k rpm....according to garrrets website calculator and my engine displacements

pumkin toy

wow that must be a fairly small turbo.  obviously you want it to be able to boost while you are on the trail.  the turbo on my 7mgte is pretty big.  they never hooked up the tach, so i dont know for sure, but it feels like it starts to boost around 2500-3000
