Dingman.

Okay so i reall need to get this diff together.  I have my brand new yukons, sitting in the box in my house, my diff welded up, and all my bearings in a box.

I just need to get pinion shims and shims for my solid pinion spacers.
Anyone wanna help setup a diff?  I am more than willing to set it up myself, but i don't have all the tools nor the experience setting these up.  If anyone would be willing to help me out, not necessarly do it for me, but to show me how to do this, i would be more than happy to provide some cash or some beer..

Zuk sets my R&P's up everytime. I've got more than 15k on the r&p in the article below and no problems. He is more than willing to help you step by step if you are going to do it yourself. Here's mine that "we" set up  http://www.gearinstalls.com/rob2.htm  . Or you can just send it to him to set up. He's pretty reasonable too.

I had zuk setup my first diff after some guy locally screwed it up, but when my locker broke it took out my gears.

Id love to have zuk setup my diff again, but i can't afford to pay the shipping and the labor right now.

Dingman.

Hey, okay so i did some searching, and don't believe i can get solid pinion spacer shims.

Does anyone have any extras laying around, they would be willing to part with?

Dingman.

I am making a little more money now,  so hopefully i can get this stupid truck ready to go soon.

Dingman.

??

Anyways.. Heres where we got with my diff, ran out of shims.  This would still be having the pinion too shallow correct?

-Matt-

its kinda hard to tell what your pattern is, doesn't look like you really ran it by hand enough to get a clear idea whats going on, but in the second picture if those marks are the only thing that hitting and those aren't just finger marks then that's really bad.

Dingman.

Yea the 2nd picture is only pictures from the tooth contact.

Not sure what to do next, im going to have to take it apart and mess with it, i can start by pulling shims out and seeing if that helps or not, i don't have anymore shims to put into it.

Dingman.

I did..

That was nearly every shim..  somewhere around .075 i think, just going off previous notes.
http://gearinstalls.com/michaelw.htm

Trying to replicate this..

(matt i have something you might get a kick out of regarding that diff.  A few others and I thought it was interesting as hell though. Ill keep it in the 4runner and show you next time i see you)

-Matt-

maybe your forgetting one of those big spacer washers. k sounds good.

Dingman.

There was no big spacer washers in the kit.

The ones i got had a stack of shims and they all went under the bearing race.
i didn't have any stock shims, and i felt that may have been a problem.

Well i snagged a stock v6 diff from scott and it didn't have any factory shims either. So. im not sure what that means, i guess i could clean up that carrier housing and swap the races and gears into it and see if it changes.

-Matt-

i cant remember on the toy diffs of not but i think there is a big washer that goes between the pinion gear and the first pinion bearing. its just basically a big starter spacer, you still have to use shims on it but if you didn't have that in then i can see how you would have used all the shims and still not be close.

Dingman.

Yea i did not have one.

As from the link that zuk did "2 shims were found on the pinion head...an OEM thick shim of .077" and a thinner after-market shim of .0125" for a total of .0895". "

And when we couldn't get that pinion bearing off when i brought it down i actually sent in that pinion with the bearing and shims on and didn't get those back.

What i find weird, is that the factory v6 diff i got from scott has no visual shims on it, would that signify the housing may be different and it didn't need shims from the factory?  Is that a possibility?  If so should i swap parts over to that housing?
