tech question: im having trouble at idle, sometimes it idles, sometimes it wont, and sometimes it pulses at idles (idles, the drops to try to die, then back up to idle untill i give it gas). ive messed with the timing at the distributor, and air screw at the intake, cleaned up the MAF, and shot some cleaner through the thropttle body, and ive tried the carb cleaner trick on the vacuum hoses to see if i have a leak, but cant seem to detect one. any ideas? when you hit the throtle, the response is good, but when it comes back down it dips below idle, and tries to die, then half the time it comes back to idle and is fin, sometimes it does the pulse thing and sometimes it dies. its a pregnant dog trying to crawl and feather the throttle, especially on hills going down :yikes:
any input would be appreciated

I had that too and fixed it the same way, but I have a stainless tube now, and it seems to not have any air leaks

Possible idle fixes
PVC valve
low coolant level
dirty idle screw
vacuum leak
Clogged small coolant hose
Adjust valves
Check plugs/wire/rotor
Replace motor (ha)

Problems that will prevent me from going to the round up:
Trailer brakes over heat going down hill
Truck doesn't run that great (has trouble Idling and wants to die)

Things to do before round up:
Finish rear bumper
Fix motor idle/try to make run better

Sell this pile and get a land cruiser(right after I hit the lotto)

I believe there is a Idle Air Control Valve with 2 large air hoses that are attached (1 before and 1 after) the throttle body. It should be the one thing that controls the idle speed.

He should ask Carlos. He had the exact same thing happening on his a while back . . .

Or get it down here where Dave's is now and maybe it will go through some transformations.  :gap:

its a 12' car trailer with surge brakes, i believe my load is to heavy and when going down hill the trailer pushes up against the back of the truck and rides the brakes. after looking around this appears to be a common occurrence. i took the mechanism apart and everything seems to be working correctly (break away wasnt set or anything) when heading up t the rim it was fine, its just coming back down, and i use my gears not ride my brakes. so im in a pickle here, guess just stop every hour of towing down hill for a while to let them cool off.

I would be embarrassed to have you look at some of my wiring haha! im gonna try a few more things myself then if i cant get it to work we shall go from there.

12' car trailer?!?!   :yikes:    Well, as for having surge brakes, backing up an incline or decending a grade are where they show their downside. What you are experiencing is a normal operation. (nature of the beast).   Your only real choices here is to replace the trailer or do an electric conversion. Do your homework to see what either will cost you if you decide to do something about this issue.

I would be embarrassed to have you look at some of my wiring haha! im gonna try a few more things myself then if i cant get it to work we shall go from there.
Ok. But there's no shame in bringing it down. Maybe we can make a training day of it and I can share some many years of experience wit ya.  :beerchug: I prefer you have a nice reliable rig than to see you have another Car-becue.  :o I will be happy to do so. I will, however, be real busy through July and August so possibly sometime this fall we can plan some time to get together and do some work to it.  :beerchug:

Your throttle return spring might be weak. I added a spring to mine and it solved the problem.

so after chatting with someone who knows what they are doing a bit more than i, it seems that i may be dumping too much fuel in (sounds like its getting plenty of air). when i spray carb cleaner near the air intake it tries to die, when normally it should kind of idle up, so im guessing that adding that more fuel in there is overwhelming the system. plus the fouled spark plugs that smell like gas lol. problem is, i dont have a fuel pressure test gauge, so i was gonna see if i have an extra fuel pressure regulator laying around in my extra parts to swap out to see if that does the trick (unless its screwed too haha). if that doesn't work i may just take it in to a shop and see what they can find.

Craziest :pokinit:!
Went to go replace the fuel pressure regulator with one of the two I had in my spare parts shed, took the vacuum hose of the existing one and noticed it was ran a little funky, so I re ran it so it was nice and straight, plugged the hose back in and boom! Purrs like a kitten(a really grungy one) no surge idle, no wanting to die, keeps steady at 750 rpm at idle. Sometimes the gods smile upon us. I knew it had to be something stupid!
On to the bumper! Operation round up is back on track!!!
