How does one obtain this magical discount? :o

At Fred Meyers or Safeway here in Oregon you get .10 for every $100 spent on groceries or whatever in the store off on gas :)

To get the $1.00 off per gallon, you have to spend $1000 per quarter, at a Fred Meyer's/Kroger store.  Von's/Safeway does a similar program too.  For every dollar you spend, you get equal amount of points.  Spend $100, get .10 off a gallon, $200, get .20, $1000, get $1.00.  $1.00 is the max per gallon.  We usually save up our fuel points till we get $1.00 off.  And since its our main and only grocery store in our little town, it adds up really quick.

A friend of my wife's, who lives in Kansas, got 15 gallons for .14 cents at a place called Hy-Vee.  So, some places, they really add up the points, with no limit.   :yikes:

Well guys the low prices have effectively killed the US oilfield. People are being laid off by the thousands in the rocky mountain region and it has just started. Luckily I have a new job not related to oilfield, but I can tell you right now I am one of the fortunate ones. There will be several people out of work until this picks back up again. At least gas is cheaper I guess.  :shudder:

it hasn't gotten that bad here yet but its coming. I work for a small company of less than 20 and 2 guys have been let go and 1 guy decided to retire in the last 2 weeks. the companies we subcontract to have asked my boss to lower his prices by 20-25%. But hey, at least when I fill my Tacoma up (that I only drive on the weekend) it doesn't cost much.

BigMike

I don't like people loosing their jobs, and this whole issue is really stupid: Gas prices get too high, people start complaining. Gas prices get too low, people start complaining.

Then I just thought about something. I think the last time I looked at the sticker on a pump here in California it said something like 40 or 50-cents per gallon are idiotic state taxes. So if gas is say $1.50 here then it's more or less costing the gas station $1 per gallon.

The way I've been thinking about this is that in the mid 90s when gas prices here had risen to about $1 gallon I don't remember news of people being laid off left and right.

But to this same degree today, if gas is $1/gal in Cali, then it's really like 50-cent per gallon before all our outrageous taxes, taxes that I doubt we had 25 yrs ago. Now the oil industry is only earning ~50% of what past $1/gal sales made, very loosely speaking as I am certainly not formerly educated in this regard.

So now what.... How in the heck are we supposed to repeal or remove taxes? The whole state is so bloated if we vote to remove taxes now we're gonna have complaints of "people loosing their jobs" because state representatives don't get free butlers, chefs, cell phones, drinks, cars, golf trips, resort vacations, and many other spoils of office, et cetera. (yes speaking like some pissed off teenager over here)

So sicking. History repeats itself... So did other past world powers fall to the same fate from being so bloated and spoiled with themselves like this? Voters need to wake up and smell the garbage.

So what about the people that are losing their jobs because of this? Who cares as long as gas is cheap, right ?

That is most of this country's mentality. I was shown an article recently that projected the energy sector losing 2.5 million jobs if the prices stay this low for all of 2015. Will they? I have no idea and neither does anyone else. Could they? Definitely. The thing most are not appreciating is energy is one of the few industries that were driving this nation's economy. Plus most of those in the industry make pretty good money, so now the economy is losing out on that being spent as well. Now you all can take this as mindless whining since I am not posting any supporting evidence, but what I am saying will be more true than not. :twocents:

This is the price gas should be anyway... It was hyper inflated..  went up too quick and too fast.. our minds are just trained to think that its low because we have been conditioned to think that $3 and up is normal. I remember freaking out when it hit $2. Now we are throwing parties because its "down" to that. I wouldn't expect it to stay where its at. Its a calculated move to crash economies like Russia and destroy progress of countries like ours where we were taking steps to be self reliant. Political BS.

It can be a bit of a balancing act. Everyone is affected in one way or another, whether prices rise or fall. Too high and it bites nearly everyone in their wallets. Too low and a lot of people find themselves without a job.

Many of us believe prices are manipulated by Big Oil, especially when the price at the pump goes up too much or too quickly. That prices have fallen so far and so fast causes me to think there may some truth to the "supply & demand" argument.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I guess some oil sheek(sp) in the middle east said oil prices will never reach $100 a barrel again.  It's a nice thought, but who knows.

Not saying this has any effect, but we are currently producing a ton of our own stateside also...

That is why the Arabs are holding the prices artificially low. They are trying to price our nations producers out of the market. Most of our producers are loosing money at these prices because the oil we produce here is harder to get. Once our nations producers get out of the market, we will begin to import oil from Saudi Arabia and then the prices will start to go up again.

I was just reading an article in Time, and it was about how the ISIS is slowly spreading from country to country.  Libya has already claimed to follow ISIS ideals, and with Yemen falling, they are next.  Along with Egypt.  Basically any Sunni nation is at risk of ISIS takeover.  What happens when it spreads to all the oil producing regions and takes over the oil fields?  We will be thinking $4.00 a gallon is cheap!!  I have a bad feeling with all the OPEC nations in the middle east right now.  What do you think will happen to most of the world if they get ahold of at least 50% of the oil fields?

Yeah, we dropped some serious sanctions on Russia, and that was aimed to undermine their oil production and other things.  Just so we can get them to stop pressuring the Ukraine.  Which doesn't seem to really be working.  Yeah their economy is in the tank.  But right now, I feel that we are on the fence on bigger issues.

In the meantime, I will continue to enjoy the lower fuel prices.  But I'm not gonna hold my breathe that it will last long.

That makes more sense than anything else I've heard.  Crude did go back up a little last week.

Back from the dead it's this thread!

One year to date in fact

So I'm glad the prices are falling (because I feel that over $4/gallon is too dang high and I've been paying those prices for waaaaaay too long) but man California is just crazy. Nothing new. Just depressing to see it.

I've read how these low prices are hurting local oil producers. I feel like I've asked this Q before..... but if the domestic oil job market is in dire straits because gas prices are around the $2/gallon mark, then how did they ever manage back when I was a kid and prices were less than $1/gallon? Of course I should be looking at this in terms of price per barrel...

I haven't read too much on what's going on. Heard it was a combo of Russia increasing production, Iran being able to export, and also our domestic production having increased causing a combined oil surplus globally. What worries me is they'll probably find some way to regroup & restructure to not only get prices back up close to $5/gallon but also install protections to prevent the price from dropping so much. Which for me as a consumer would not be good.

I'm just looking to get this thread alive again and someone informed to post up some nice info

:gap:

Where are all the hookers in N Dakota going to go now with all those guys out of work?  This is going to be tough.

I lost a job due to cheap imported Canadian wood products, so I can feel the pain of the guys out of work.  I'm really enjoying this at the pump though.
