I have no idea what my dad is smoking, or who is talking to/hearing, but I talked to him last night and he claimed gas could go as low as $0.50 a gallon this summer. He seemed pretty convinced. Wouldn't that be awesome......
Yup, hopefully this will happen. I heard about it yesterday:

just paid 4.29 for regular.  cost me $104 to fill up.  $.50 a gallon lower would be nice, but that would still be 3.79 a gallon.  I doubt we'll ever ever see less than $3/gallon ever again.  they push it up $2 and wait for everyone to start throwing a fit about gas prices, then lower it $1 to make everyone happy, then start all over again.  it's just going to keep going higher and higher.  supply and demand.  they lower the supply to increase prices.  i'm just glad i don't have to drive as much on weekends anymore.

for me to drive to rubicon and back now is going to cost about $500 round trip.  this is crazy.  4 years ago, it cost me under $200.  and i'll keep paying it too.  thats the sad part.

40-60 cents my ass!  Was gas not more like $3 a gallon when oil was around $100 a barrel?  Why would it not be the same damn price again?  Because, like I've said before, they got us used to paying more so that now when the price "drops" it's still higher than before.

Nonono, not drop TO $0.50/gallon (not gonna happen), drop BY $0.50/gallon (very possible). But who knows for how long.

And I agree with Nate -- I have long believed that fuel costs will continue to escalate, two steps up, one step down, two steps up and so on. Many of us were outraged at $3 gas, then saw $4+, and when it went back to $3 we almost began to think of it as normal. Now that it's above $4 again, it may slip to ~ $3.50 for awhile, until we start to think that's a normal price. Expect it to push close to $5 next time. It won't be long before we think $4/gallon is normal, and wish it were that low again....

So a question, how low would gas prices have to reach in order for you to be "satisfied" ?

Personally I feel that $2.00 a gallon wouldn't be too bad, definently manageable.

Anyone else?

Satisfied = $2.  I'd be ok with it peaking at $3 when prices rise, but I don't believe it should cost near what it does now and don't like the profits the oil companies are reporting.

It's really a double edged sword.  With what I'm making now I have to keep trips to a minimum to stay within budget, and haven't hiked the alps in nearly 2 years.  If the price were to stick around $2 a gallon I'd be hiking at least once a month, and probably more like 3-4 times every 2 months.  Same goes for fishing (currently split gas with a friend), and will go for hunting as seasons open.  They'll probably get the same amount of money from me if they keep the prices high, but I'd likely spend the same and be much more content if prices were lower.

Look at the profit as a percentage of sales. Their percentage is not all that great, many industries out perform petroleum. A low percentage on a huge amount of sales makes for huge numbers...want to get pissed? Look at what governments, federal and state take...FAR more than the oil companies make and they take no risk, provide no jobs and incur no costs. Big oil IS NOT the problem...big eff'n government is. What oil companies earn wouldn't even make up for the waste on the federal level.

I have to charge more to customers now because of gas prices.  In my job, with all the hauling of materials and tools, I need my full size truck, or a nice strong toyota to pull it all.  I would love it to be $3/gallon.

Look at how much California tacks on the the price of fuel...per gallon!!!

Edit: I'm keeping on this, 'cause it chaps my ass for people to blame the wrong entity. I just read...oil companies average a 9.5% profit margin. The average brewery...how many of y'all are going to whine about this...26%, why aren't they in front of congress? It's Congress that should be being investigated...not businesses.

As much as this is hard to believe, I feel that in the case of gas vs beer it all about quantity.  Unfortunately they are selling more gas than beer.

Oh, I know, they put the taxes right on the pumps for us to  :shudder:  while pumping.

I know there are others making far greater profits, but it doesn't cost me $50 to fill up on beer, and it's not a necessity.  If I buy a 6 pack, it only goes away quickly if I let my roommates drink some.

Just now on CNN -- (pay attention kids, this will make your day)..... Because vehicles are getting better fuel mileage (which I thought was considered to be a good thing), it seems the fuel taxes collected by the Feds are just not keeping pace. Our Fearless Leaders in Washington are now considering a driving tax. That's right folks, a tax on every mile you drive.

This is actually not a new idea. But with budgets in a mess, it is being looked into again. This cannot be good.....

Come on...I'm sure they'll be fair about it. They'll only tax the miles that they determine are wasteful miles.

Crap in a hat, some of you are paying $4+ a gallon already? I was complaining when it's $3.70-ish here in CO. One more reason to rebuild the CRX engine despite what the wife says. A 9-gallon tank + a 2100 lb curb weight used to get me 45-ish mpg... even with more than 230k on the clock. Now it smokes like a chimney at startup and gets 200 miles/tank. Suck. I did basic maintenance stuff (filters, plugs etc) and it's still eating oil and fuel.

Totally needs to be rebuilt; just don't tell my wife.  :shhh:

:yesnod:  my buddy is bringing me back my broken full suspension mountain bike tomorrow.  I have friday off and plan on swapping the better forks, wheels, brakes, and whatever else to my hardtail mtb and riding the 5.5 miles to work.  Not like I burn through much gas on the motorbike, but if they're gonna start stickin it to me, I'll start stickin it to them.  Plus I'll just disconnect the speedo cable or do whatever I need to to skirt around the mileage law.

I'm not one for breaking the law, but I'm not one for taking it in the ass either!
