I HATE SMOG!!!
« on: Jul 23, 2007, 06:44:24 PM »
I just bought a 90 4Runner with a 22RE.  It has a brand new engine, and runs perfect.  Except for a small stumble at idle every now & then & the check engine light will come on after 40+ miles of driving.  (I reset it right before I took it in)  I went in today for a smog, as I am in the process of getting all the paperwork squared away at the DMV.  I was kinda stoked going in as I was sure this thing would pass smog, (I've had 3 other 22R(E) powered vehicles that never passed.  Needless to say the smog gods weren't on my side and the truck failed as a GROSS POLLUTER!  :censored:  The numbers on my report are:

At 15MPH     HC 45     CO  .05     NO  3553

At 25MPH     HC 0       CO  .05     NO  3427

So the NO's are way off the charts as max allowed in Placer County is 1800/1600!

Spoke with a couple people and they are saying somethings wrong with the EGR system.  Does this make sense?  The truck seems to run great at all RPM's.  Another idea I heard was to run the fuel real low & dump a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the tank right before getting it smogged.  ???  Does anyone have any experience with these conditions, or any tips to get this thing smogged?  Thanks for any advice!

have you read the how to pass smog thread? change the oil right before the test, and get it hot, do some higher speed driving right before you take it in....

I had an issue with my Samurai that was making it almost gross pollute, it seems the problem was tires! My tires were too big and were causing the motor to work too hard to push them. So what we did was to put the thing in low 4x4 and it blew so clean that it even shocked the tech. See if the tech will work with you that way and it may make the difference.

be careful where you go too, some techs are cool and will help you try to pass, and others will fail you for some petty stuff... when i took my 2wd in, the guy came at me and told me that he was going to fail me because of where my exhuast exited, it turned down right before the rear axle, and he didnt want to put the probe that close to the dyno wheel

I know how you can pass smog...move out of kommifornia...
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

Did most of that stuff, drove the SH$t out of it on the way home from work for 35 min, fresh oil, tiny 235/65/15 tires, the list goes on!  I'm so pissed right now!

try cleaning your EGR ports.  They will increase exhaust temp and NOx when plugged. My bet is the tube is totally plugged and possibly the diaphragm is junk. pull the whol thing off, spray it with carb cleaner, or soak it overnight, and hit it with a brush.

Check the egr like Duffil said.  Also, you might put a new cat converter on it.  I put one that would normally go on a fullsize truck on mine and it passes with flying colors.

I was in the same boat, got tagged with that ugly lable "gross polluter"  new cat cleaned the EGR tube and rebuilt carb and after that I was a winner.  The cool thing is the guy that did the work has a 7 gas analyzer or something like that its like a smog machine,so he was able to pinpoint the problems and gauranteed it for 2 more smog tests.  That was cool.   If you go to a referee station they will tell you why it wont pass then after it is fixed and passes they will lift the gross polluter stigma.

take it to a mech shop that does smog. Most of the smog only places(around here anyway) won't give you any info other than "sorry dude, it failed.  That's 36.50." And please, pay for the pretest!!!!
