Project Kilchis!! Update 9/13/09
« on: Apr 20, 2007, 01:18:16 PM »
Well, I'm starting my build up thread!  As I bought a early b-day gift for myself and Kilchis.  Here it is!

I got it yesterday from DP motorsports.  The motor was cheaper than thought originally!  $1500  ($1350 + 150 for core)  It comes with a new oil pan, oil pickup, oil pump, timing chain, steel backed guide, timing cover, water pump and a complete new head, that is all new rockers, valves, and cam!  The only thing that is "rebuilt" is the crank, block, and rods!  This is one of the best deals I've seen!  I wish I had the ability, tools and knowledge, I could have built one cheaper, but I don't!  So, I'm learning as I go into this build!

So far I've gotten a spare efi and extra goodies from Snoshoebrue, and I need to pick up a few other things before I drag the truck into the shop from the storage shed!  So, I will keep ya'll informed as I go!  I'm waiting on a stock exhaust and I need to order a Marlin clutch!   So, here we go!

Just a little note on what's going to be the schedule of things!  First of all it's a 1987 with a 22rte motor!  The truck has 202,000 hard miles on it and is using quite a bit of oil.  And it's been sitting for 3 years and won't start!  So, I bought it with the notion of a new motor anyway!  I don't want to half-ass this build!  I'm going to do this right!

So, here are the plans for Kilchis!
Immediate things that are needed done asap!

1~new motor
2~flatbed

Later will be

3~sas with 4" lift maybe, not sure on a small body lift yet, need info on why first!
4~axles ~ thinking 4.88 with lockers, selectable locker, not a full time one! Haven't decided on ARB or E-locker
5~dual cases, but haven't decided if I really need the 4.7, but it would sure be nice!
6~Tires-haven't decided on what brand and tread, swampers do good around here, but don't last long on a DD.

That's just the basics right now!  I don't want to build a full on rockcrawler, I want a very capable off road rig that will also be my daily driver!  Something along the lines of Glenn's budget build!

Thank you for your time and opinions!

Well, I got the truck pulled out of the shed, and gave it a good bath, used some degreaser/cleaner and some soap and water.  Tried to degrease some of the engine compartment, and the rear axle.  Got it drug around the yard with the mother-in-laws subaru, was gonna use the neighbors skid loader, but it was dead!  So, I got it close to the shop and strung out some rope to a tree and ran it through the shop and with a come along I got it drug up into the shop!  It was a pain, but had to get it in there some how!  I will start to tear into it shortly.   I got to work a banquet next weekend and try to replace a window in my house.  And the following weekend is our anniversary!

So, here are some pics!
A before pic!

Here it is clean!

I forgot one thing, I picked up some 3rd gen doors, and hood, with some 2nd gen fenders.  I had to get it all or nothing, so I said what the hell.  I only needed the fenders, but the doors did come in handy.  The hinges are toast on my truck, but the hinges on the other doors are the same!  SWEET!!  Paying off already!!

No, a local old german who knows his stuff about the need for speed!  He's on east 3rd st in Tillamook, OR.  He takes LC motors and makes them better!  A local kid ordered the top of the line LC Engineering motor, and it didn't meet expectations, until Dieter got ahold of it!  Now I'm told it will run 10,000+ rpm's and well over 250 hp on just a carb!
He takes his porsches to Bonneville!

I had to go through some old Datsun stuff last night because I just kept going :headscratch:  this cant be the same place.
Then I found it, it is a place called "DP Racing" out of Huntington beach. they do go fast parts for Datsuns.  i was confused

sounds like a great start.  Good luck with it cheesemaker.

Well, I got tired of being sick and dragged my ass out and took care of some things that were planned for my 3 day weekend.  I started ripping into the truck.  Didn't get very far, cause I had alot to do in only one day!  As a matter of fact, I wish I could call in sick, but I can't afford to do that!  I'm still sick as a dog!

The undercarriage is quite oily.  Due to an oil leak somewhere.

And the rotten radiator.

and some of the things I've tore off, not all of them!

And I think the turbo is definitely bad.  The intake between the turbo and TPS was saturated with oil!  I took the rubber piece off that bends into the TPS and oil ran out of it!  I'm glad I'm starting fresh with a 22re and eliminating the turbo motor!

Right now, I'm planning on trying to use the original intake, due to the larger tps intake and larger afm.  That way I get better airflow into the motor.  I got a re intake and harness from Snoshoebrue, but it has definitely seen better days, but I got a good deal, and alot of spare parts!  And my existing intake and harness is in way better shape, except covered in grease and dirt!  I've gotten alot of confirmation that it will all work, minus the turbo.  As for the stuff that's not gonna be used, I'll part out or sell all of it off.  The 22rte motor has a new head on it!  As for the rest of the block, I think it just needs a good rebuild.  I thought about trying to keep the turbo setup and rebuild the motor, but after seeing all the costs and weighing out the pros and cons of keeping the turbo, I decided it wasn't beneficial to me to keep the original setup in the truck!  Have to run Super Unleaded, crap I'd go broke just filling it up!  And if the turbo needs to be replaced, I would have to go to a better turbo setup and I don't have that kind of $.  I will post up here when I decide what to do with the motor!  I saw the turbo vanes and I figured they be bigger!  :headscratch:

Right now, I've been between getting rid of my cold, yes it's still lingering, mowing grass, and I've been slaying the moles that threaten to tear up my yard!  But, I've taken a few minutes here and there to work on the truck when I can.  It's been fun on some of the bolts, without air tools!  I've been busting them the old fashioned way!  Been cleaning up all the brackets, and scraping off the layers of grease, oil, and dirt, and then painting them.  I don't want to put on crappy looking parts on a new clean motor.  I found out that the alternator adjuster and bracket have broke at some time!  Some crappy welding, need to find some better fitting bolts and grind down the bracket a little better!  Besides, that it's really been slow, but soon!  I'll be taking pics as I go along!

Well the motor is out!

Which was fun.  :maddest: Especially for the one bolt that bolts into the bell housing that was covered in crude, so I couldn't see it, until I started to scrape away crude from around the bell housing.  Then the input spline was rusty and didn't want to slide out of the clutch without some serious pulling on it, and a little use of the prybar!  The bell housing is in need of some cleaning!

The front and rear main seals were definitely shot!

I fixed the fuel filler neck, cause all the ones I was given, were for 3rd gen, and have a smaller diameter opening.  2" versus 1.75".  So I snagged the filler neck off the old chevy bed we have as a trailer and it worked.

Then I went to a guys house for some exhaust, and I got the older style of collector and downpipe, another fuel filler neck, and some more doors, second gen, all for free!  The doors are beat, but I can see some nice half doors!!  This guy has a yard full of toyota's and I know were to get parts if needed!

And I found out why the motor didn't want to start, was the coil wires turned to dust inside the heat shielding.  I probably could have figured that out if I wanted to seriously run the turbo, but I just want to run a 22re.  And on monday I'll be ordering a clutch and some necessary stuff from Marlin!   :willynilly:  Whoo Hooo!!  The clutch disc is down to the last 10% or so, and since I'm right there, it would be silly not to replace it!  And I'll have to get the flywheel turned too!

What takes the longest on some of this is cleaning off the crude that is stuck to everything!  Got some killer stuff from work.  Orange Magic, and it does wonders, including getting your hands cleaner than GoJo or anything else I've tried!  I just didn't want to put dirty parts on the new motor!  Just cleaned up and repainted parts!

Well, I just made my first major Marlin order today!  Ordered the Clutch for the turbo, even though I'm running the 22re, I'm gonna stick with the larger clutch for better engagement!  And the associated grade 8 bolts to go with it!  And of course some other added advertisement for Marlin in our neck of the woods!  I dropped off my flywheel to be turned yesterday, so I can pick it up this afternoon before work!  I can't wait, they said all parts are in stock, so hopefully, I'll see it all in a few days!  I figured shipping would be more than it was, but Marlin rocks!

Well, I got the bellhousing somewhat clean, and the rag isn't!  Little brake cleaner goes along way!   I got the flywheel resurfaced, by the guy I got my motor from and today I dropped off my free exhaust manifold to have it resurfaced.  Took it to the muffler guy and had him weld up the air injection ports.  First of all he didn't want to do it, until he decided to buff down the steel sleeves and drop in some bolts to weld to the ports!  Looks good!

Was gonna get ready to drop in the distributor until I noticed the gear on the end is messed up!  Parts of the teeth are missing and shifted up!  :yikes:  I'll get pics later!  So, I'll have to swap all the parts from one to the spare dist.  One came with all new parts on it!  Brass connections not aluminum.  So, that's this weekends goal.

I broke a stud in the Turbo manifold so the spare efi is coming in handy!  That and the burned up wire for the coil will get fixed.  That's getting re-routed around the firewall to the coil, not directly over the exhaust!

So my goals for Sunday is to tear the Turbo efi off and swap it over to the new motor, install the distributer, and the flywheel!  And I'll start to check the wires for anything bad!  Just waiting for the clutch.  Marlin was waiting for a shipment of throw out bearings to come in from L.A.  Talked to Dave at the shop, he's way cool person to talk to!  I really need to make a trip to the shop next time I'm down in Fresno!

I'm gonna ship some cheese to them right before the Roundup this year.  Did you hear that Mrs Willy there will be some cheese there for you!   :yesnod:  Well later!  :cheese:

The dist. gear on the right is the one that came out of the turbo motor, and the other one came with the stuff from Snoshoebrue!  But the bad one needs to be swapped over to the other, due to it has a new cap, rotor, and wires!

Old clutch disc, not the grooves are almost gone!  Just waiting for my MC-11007 clutch!

And here's the intake I'm putting on!  With the turbo Throttle body!

We'll I didn't get to do what I wanted to do, Aunt Flo was in town, and I don't get to do what I was promised until she feels better!  That really pisses me off!  :tantrum: I really got to get the truck going, need firewood for winter and I got hedges that need to be cut!

The good side of things, my clutch is being tracked to my house as we speak!  Tessie gave the tracking # and its in between Roseburg, OR and West Sacramento, CA.   :willynilly:  But the only thing I got done was the distributer!  Got the good stuff swapped over and cleaned up the base as good as I could!  It's not shiny, but it looks better!

As soon as my clutch shows up, I can get that on, and I'll be almost ready to install the motor!   :beerchug:
I've got to get new plugs and the right wires!  Not local house brand wires, but some good ones!
