I brought home Project Zak's truck!!
« on: Dec 07, 2009, 10:19:01 PM »
a new project truck.  I've been wanting a spare backup rig for when one of our rigs is down for repairs.  I've got a line on a 85 extra cab 4x4, and a FJ62.  But a co-worker has been asking me about a serious knock in his motor.  Well that was a couple of months ago, and since then, I've been giving him a bad time about when it dies, call me and I'll tow it to my house.  Well, the head gasket blew.  So, I'll gonna go and seriously look over it this thursday.  If I decide to buy it, it will only cost me $500.  My only concern is the frame.  It's a 91 std cab 4x4, just needs a 22re.  But it will also need a new door, heater controls, and maybe a tailgate.

The wife gave me the go ahead to get it.   :willynilly:  So, I will keep ya'll informed on what happens.

The 85 my uncle owns and it just sits in the garage till he needs a dump run, home repair supplies, or gardening stuff.  He just hasn't decided on when he wants to get a newer rig yet.  He keeps saying when he wins the lottery.  In the mean time they drive their Aveo/Geo everywhere.  Sad to just see a perfect rig just sit there.   :shake_head:

The FJ62 is owned by a friend of mine, and he is planning on selling it.  But not sure when he wants to commit to it.  He owned it since College from what I understand, and he has fond memories of it.  But he knows how much I love his rig and I get first dibs.  This rig is in excellent condition, just needs a new rear main seal.  This is the off-road family rig I want.   It just sits at his place for the time being.

The possible new project, the future is open on it.  I've got a son that is turning 12 in March and will want to be learning how to drive soon enough.  :smack:   So,  :dunno:  We will see what happens.  If not it will be a parts rig.  Only time will tell.  But when a deal comes along and you can afford it, jump on it.  :eyebrow:  And I have some extra money stashed.

So, I really looked over the rig today, and I will be bringing it home.  Just needs a little TLC, but I couldn't pass it up.

The first thing I looked at was the frame around the gas tank, and it was spotless.  No sign of any rust at all.   :willynilly:  Hell, the frame still has it's nice black paint on it.  Outside of the dirt and mud on it.  One of the things I will be looking into is a power steering setup.  Cause larger tires and no power steering is not a fun thing.

What you think?

Sweet, I'll let you know when the next time I come your way.  Since your just a few minutes off the hwy!
I'm kinda excited, about another project rig, even though I'm not done with mine.  Well, my oldest son is gonna be 12 in March so maybe he will be driving this truck.  Heck for $500 I'd be stupid for not getting it.

Well, I got it towed home tonight.  That was fun.   :shake_head:  Nothing like holding the door shut with one arm, manual steering with the other, a battery that didn't have much juice left to run the flashers, yet alone the wipers cause it was pouring out and every frickin cop out tonight.  Oh, and it was 38* out.

One good thing this thing has all new brakes on it.  I found a receipt for the brake job done in May, he spendt $979.00 for all new brakes, rotors, drums, axle seals, and anything else needed to make it stop.

And on the way home from looking at it, my wife decided to call it Zak's truck!  Zak is my oldest and will be 12 in March.  So, what a good way to get his hands dirty on it.

Whats wrong with the door?  I have a few sets of the handles both inside and out as well as the latch assembly that you are welcome to along with the interior stuff you need.  When I scrap doors I gut them first. :D

Nice find cheesy!  Looks just like my 2wd, save for the obvious difference.  I woulda bought it for that, that's a good deal given the circumstances.  Looks like a fat guy repeatedly hung off the driver's door though  :ack:

All the doors need is hinges, these are shot, door latch and striker for drivers side.  If you got those WT let me know.

I got alot of ideas running around in my head on what I'm gonna do to this truck.  I'm thinking on keeping it IFS.  We will see.  :dunno:

White Trash, let me get an inventory of what I need door wise, and I will let you know.  I think I need a regulator for the drivers door too.  As soon as I get a chance I'll figure it all out.  And we will make a deal.

Hey WT, shoot me a figure on the door latch mechanism and catch for the drivers door.  What condition are the door hinges in?  Any slop?  If not give a price on both passenger and drivers side.  Right now I got the drivers door bungee'd to the gear shifter.  The wind has been horrible here.

Nope.  I worked on the drivers door a while back in the rain, till I was soaked and it still wouldn't close right.

BIL's 92 Toy has a issue, and I'm thinking about pulling all the intake, harness, ECM, dist. and install it in his, to see if we can get the idling, surging problem fixed so my niece drive it.

I've got to many bills, and other things preventing me from getting anything done on any of my rigs.  But I do get to pick up some parts here and there when I can.

Well, this truck is going bye-bye!  Sad to say, I just didn't have time or money to put into it.  Plus, the more I tore into it, the more I found stuff really wrong with it.  Lets say half this truck was held together by drywall screws!!  :yikes:

~Trans was fubared
~The entire dash had issues, use of drywall screws, seat was held in with drywall screws too, if it had a screw, they used a drywall screw
~Entire front 4Runner clip, held on with said screws
~Ebrake system is all frozen up from front to back
~Found out motor isn't rebuildable, found a prior owner who said the engine was bored well over max limits
~Never could get the door to line up, without going to a body shop
~Heater system is toast

Getting it all pulled out of the shed today.  Find all the parts I pulled of it.  And swap out a tire/wheel.
I don't want to sell the truck.  Was gonna just strip it down to a hill bomber after finding out all the issues with it.  Half doors, Long Travel IFS and whatever else to make it fun.  I have a 4.56 front IFS diff from a member here, and was gonna swap out the rear to the same with a locker.  And just run 33's.  And dual cases for crawling also.

But house repair, oldest is going to Italy/Greece over spring break on a Educational Tour, his graduation, college, and everything else that comes along with being a responsible adult/parent is forcing me to sell it.  Not making much on it, just recovering what I got into it.  Purchase price, title/plates transfer, and some bits and pieces.  Making a coworker a deal.

But on the bright side, I am not a fan of the 3rd gen body style anyway.  I am a 2nd gen fan first and foremost.
