If so many people are unhappy, someone could always start a hiring/looking thread like they have over on Pirate...you never know, might just find something that suits you better... ???

I worked in a casino vault for 2 years... I was cool being around and touching all that money, rubbing all over my naked body in front of all the cameras uh...I mean...um  But then I got my paycheck at the end of the week.... :smack: Hmmm $6.000.000.00 or $525...I hated that job. Or all the money...I cant decide. :headscratch:

I could have a worse job.
I work for an architectural firm, my third office. I do AutoCAD. It's tedious work, very computer intensive. Architects are a PITA!!! (Mr W called me today to slap one for him) Ar-teests that dont' get that what they want you to build can't be done, not only witihin budget BUT WITHIN STRUCTURAL REALITY! (sorry if there are any architect out there but I doubt it!)
I come home some nights with my eyes just aching. And there is a very high level of stress with constant deadlines. I do get to surf some, and email with friends and family but the office I am working for now is very cool. There are actually people that are interested in our hobby. That is a first amongst architectrual offices. OK so they are Heep fans, but I'll forgive them if they will me.
The office is a lot of fun and I get paid well so that makes up for a lot of the negatives.
But I would rather be making the money I do working outdoors.

Love my job.  I have tried it all, but this is the best one to date.  I teach 8th grade math.  Every day is different, and every child poses a new challenge.

I work for the Minnesota Department of Transportation as a surveyor using really expensive GPS to build state highways and tons of other things related to roads and property along roads. The job rules, we have two Polaris Rangers, one 6x6 and one brand new 4x4 model. We rod around the ditches, through fields and in major road construction sites all day. It is cool to be able to wheel in my own playground that is closed to the public and get paid for it. The people I work with rule but the boss and all the procedure that comes with being a state employee sucks. It sucks always being in the public's eye, we get reported all the time for being parked on our union alloted lunch breaks. People just don't understand that we get 15 min breaks and lunch too  :shake_head: , even though we rarely take it. It also sucks being called worthless and lazy just because you work for the state, we bust our asses everday working overtime so the people that talk trash about us can have a new road or driving surface. I just put in two weeks notice today because I am leaving to go to a private Engineering and Architectural firm. I will be working 10 hours minimum per day staking out anything from sub-divisions to malls to power plants. Surveying is great, you are outdoors all day long, and often find yourself in 4wd in a company truck getting muddy and get paid well. The job is challenging and rewarding when you see something get build that you worked on.

I am a supervisor at a police garage, talk about a job that sucks. I'm supposed to be in charge but that's a joke the nuts run this insane asylum. :hammer:  :hammerhead:  :help:  I do get to sit here though and post on the internet all day.  I must get something out of it since I've been doing this for almost 20 years.

alwayzbroken, how does one go about becoming a surveyor?

In most cases you can go apply at a firm that does surveying and get a entry level position as the crew member that pounds the stakes and does most the work that does not require any special training. You get a lot of on the job training and can progress quickly. Most all the surveyors I work with got into surveying this way at a young age. You can work your way up from there. Or the best thing to do is get a two year degree in civil tech or go to some survey school. The schooling required to get a decent starting position is not that much. If you have a B.S (four year bachelor of science degree) in anything or a geography degree it will set you up for the most pay and you will be able to become a registered land surveyor which is in high demand right now and they get paid very well. I am in college and was hired by the state of Minnesota as a "student worker." Because I was an engineering student I was eligible to work there as kind of an internship kind of deal. Most places you just need to be willing to learn and interested in surveying to get hired. I was the low man on the totem pole when I started but as a 19 year old that was alright with me. A postion just opened up as second man on a crew and I could have applied for that if I was going to pursue a career as a surveyor. This is how most people work their way in surveying with no education required. Experience counts more in this field than education. Education just helps to get your foot in the door. Hope that helps.

Love my job, work at a Health Center, and sit around working on my computer all day. I sometimes schedule meetings, and hang out with all the big wigs around here. Its cool because I sit in my office, with the lights off, the radio on, and nobody bothereing me. I almost always get free lunches too. T1 connection makes surfing lots more fun. The people here are pretty cool too

Sometimes, we bring DVD's to work, and spend the day watching movies. Yeah, I get paid pretty good too.

Just another day at the office. We were cruising flat out in high gear when we came across this hole and the driver managed to slame on the brakes and swerve enough to keep from hitting it head on. That would have been really bad as the hole was about 3 feet deep and four feet wide. I was riding shotgun holding the GPS staff that is in the left of the picture so I had nothing to hold on to and wasn't wearing the seatbelt. The GPS set up also costs many thousand dollars and the 10000$ Ranger could have made this a very expensive day.

We have done plenty of that. It is push button 4wd with a rear cable locker and I think it has a limited slip of some sort in the front but I could be wrong. When my phone broke I lost all the pictures of the thing buried in mud up to the headlights  . I got it stuck on a highway construction job and they had to send the F-350 guard rail truck with 300ft of cable to pull me out because none of the other state trucks could get anywhere near where I was. It was hard pretending like I didn't mean to go through the mud and that I was mad at myself for doing it. Actually I had a damn good time and would do it again, but the other guys wouldn't want to hear that. They will drive an extra 5 minutes to go around a puddle rather than go through because they are so afraid of getting stuck.

I love/hate my job.  The job is easy, but the assholes!  I make cheese all day, and all the cleaning that comes with it!  Tillamook cheese!!  I get paid $15.00 and hour to put a bag on a chute and push buttons all day. Sometimes I have to remember how easy I got it!!!  When it's time to clean all the equipment, move a few elbows and push a button.  We get paid for what we know, not what we do!  When something goes wrong, that's when the excitement happens!!

My all time favorite job was delivering      I was a GOD to many, but then the boss sold the company and the new owners didn't want to keep a warehouse in town!  It was one of those jobs that if your having a crappy day, I would go in the back of the truck and find some breakage, couldn't sell broken cases, or I would create some breakage!  After having a beer it was all better!! :yesnod:  :beerchug:

Before that, I was at Les Schwab Tire Center, spendt 7 years there, and had no social life, basically worked 24/7, late night service calls sucked.  Made really good money, but being 33 and already have ruined my back, hips, and I have knee problems because of it!!!  I could tell you how to get free service from them if you want to to save a shitload of money!  Like never have to pay for balancing your tires ever!!
