I might be alone with this.... but dont you hate it when you roll through a drive through, or someone at a stoplight asks "How much lift is that?"
You may have just conquered some insane rock garden, crawled over a volkswagon size boulder, and the onloookers will ask.. :How much lift is that?"
haha    :headscratch:   The irony is that we spend all this time wrenching and tweaking springs, crawl ratios, tire size, approach/departure angles, suspension geometry etc.. etc... and the only thing they wonder about is  "How much lift is that?"  haha

I guess that question is common witht he skyjacker crowd, and newbies, but I cant help but feel stumped when they ask.

I just tell em "Hek If I know...each speedbump or rock changes it constantly..."  Then again im a smartass.

And dont even try to explain what dual T cases are......     :shake:

Ha Ha,whatup Luke?.I used to have a Toyota on 36s a few years back and I was in Montclair and some cat tells me,"Day-um,how big are those wheels?",assuming he's talking about my tires I say"36 inches",and he says,"Oh damn,I thought my 20s were big!!!",as he gets into his Tahoe on Dubs.  :rofl2: This was when 20s first came out and were considered Gi-Normous.

My favorite was when I was getting new tires, and the truck is already on the lift so the suspension is at full droop. One of the employees walks in and looks at the truck, then walks over and asks how much lift, I told him 4", he says, "are you sure? it looks like 8 to me". I'd like to think he was joking but he wasn't.  :rofl2: Yeah it's going to look like 8 when you hang the truck from the frame.  :smack: Have seen him around town since and he's got a HUGE 60's ford with about 12"+ lift

True Dat.  You put all this money into a truck and the first two questions are "how much?" or "what kind?" of lift it is and "how tall are your tiers?"

The question I hate is when you make a hard line look easy in front a bunch of fullsize dudes. Then then they ask you "hey whats that thing got for a motor in it." I'll tell em its the stock 4 cylinder. Then the people argue with you about how the motor is too small to turn such big tires after you just walked past their whole damn crew.

The other thing is when you aren't even at the trails. When I have the truck on the trailer or its sitting in camp or someplace and a guy will ask what mods are done and then after you tell him it has a stock 22re he automatically assumes you are clown with a POS truck cuz you have a 4 cylinder. There is more to wheeling than fricken' motors!

Now doubt there is, I mean look what a 65 hp diesel can do.

Or in my case, I had a cop pull up beside us on the hwy and yell out his pass window "what size tires are those?"

He just shook his head when I said 38's. I guess a Jeep on 38's is not normal?

Then I had a trucker yell out from behind us " Is that a diesel? "

People just don't expect to see anything that didn't come from the factory.

I know exactly what you mean. I like to tell all the locals that see my truck on the trailor that I'm heading to the mud drags. They say I bet its fast, and I just reply yea that motor screams.  :haha:

Whats even better is when I tell the jeep guys that If I had more motor I might have to swap in some dana 30s.

I know exactly what that is like.  One of my customers' kids is a chevy guy.  big engine, big lift etc... after I lifted and dual-cased my truck, he came in and asked me about it, so I ran through what I had done. His eyes were glazed over when I was done.  He then asked what engine I had, and I said "not-exactly-stock 22R, yadayada.." his eyes got big and he decided to tell me that with that small engine I wouldn't make it over a 2ft tall rock. :stopit:

Some people are just stooooooooooooopid. I just tell people I have some mods. I like to let them see for themselves. On the other hand there is nothing more fun than sitting at a tough rock climb and teasing the fullsize boys when they by pass the hill. "C'mon guys we just took 5 Toyotas right up this." That will usually get em' going with "I don't have my Dana 60 yet" or my favorite one "If I had a bigger motor."

Michael do you remember those hillbillys at Flat Nasty when we were going up 19?

i'm that oddball chevy guy then, dont believe in big power engines. i'm lookin to put an underdrive in my 81 after i put a diesel in it, then just idle up everything. you can either go with big power, or go with low gearing. more control with gearing, less damage, and your a better driver.

This is a better view of the hill. Wicked. I asked the guy in the jumpsuit why he wasn't gonna try and this was his reply, "If I had the big block still I would try it." The guy was running a half ton Chevy with worn TSL Thornbirds. I have no idea what he thought he was gonna with a bigger motor other than detonate his truck but I sure would have loved to see it.

Its nothing against any other brand of vehicle. Its just the tards who don't get it. Gearing/Tires/bigblock/whatever, :dunno: its not the rig its the people who don't try to understand or who have a strong misconception of what the sport is all about, even thoug that is a little different for everybody. :headshake: :nonono:

I don't understand how he is ragging on people. What is his view? He knows how it is and so does anybody that has spent a lot of time on the trails. There are pretty much those people that have a clue and those that don't. More frequently those that don't, tend to have mullets and drive big trucks with big tires, big motors with stock axles and gears. Ever been to the midwest?

I live in the midwest, and I don't understand why there has to be insults about people who are admiring the work you or anyone else on this board puts into their rig.  I have been on the trail for 15 years and am more than willing to tell ANYONE (mullet or not) about my truck.  Nuff said.

Most people don't admire my rig but instead make fun of it cuz it is beat up and Japanese. When I pull up to a hill I get jokes and people telling me I ain't gonna make it. I got news for them. They miss the point altogether just like you are with the subject matter of this thread. Its not about being cocky when somebody has an interest in your rig, its about being irritated when a douchebag know nothing comes up to an extensively modified rig and says the dumbest thing he possibly can. Maybe you have never experienced this.

Well I started this thread to point out the general misconception people have about 4x4 rigs alltogether. Hell I used to drive a Jeep, I wheeled the crap out of it, and at the time All I could thing about is "How much lift do I need to clear those 35's.."  I could care less about gearing, crawl ratios, slipyokes  etc... I just wanted it to get me home after I flogged it to death in some mudpit.

Kind of think of it, I sort of miss the days when I had NO clue about my rig and just wheeled the crap out of it  haha. Ignorance truly is bliss.

Now we go wheelin and become obsessed with "WIll my birfields hold up to this reverse out in double low with the wheel locked?"  haha

" If I blow a bead do I have enough wd-40 do re-seat the thing? Damn did I bring any matches?"   haha

Well I guess there is infancy in all sports.

I went out snowmobiling for the first time a few months ago and one of the experienced guys (the jerk naturally)  asked if I had an Avalanche beacon.

And Avalanche what??

Apparently its like wheelin without a tow strap and he flipped out on me.... but I still had fun in my bliss.

Comedy is the last refuge of the nonconformist mind.

Alwayzbroken, I am from Hamilton, Ohio(North of Cincinnati).  I got a little grief, but when I explained to people all the benefits of Toyotas and showed the 200,000 mile odometer, alot of them shut up.  To me it's all a toss up,  full size rigs start with hp and need axles to keep it together, toyotas start with good axles but need a little hp, granted not as much.  Many of us would like to do a 4.3 conversion, or more hp from a Toy.
