9/16ths are plenty.. and theres no way you broke a shaft. theres guys pounding on stock yota rear shafts with 40's and 42's. with no breakage
and braking a shaft would mean a lot more than thump, thump...... remember when i broke my tailshaft? my truck didnt move.....
