Zippo helped me today change out the injectors for new ones. Wow that made a big difference! I can tell there is still room for improvement but I think the mechanical pump will take care of that. After looking at the injectors it seemed clear that most of the trouble was coming from cylinder #2.

Damn, I have sexy hands.
If you see it, its for sale.

Thanks for being willing to hand model the injectors. If this Enginerding career doesnt work out for you, you have a fall-back opportunity as a hand model.

last weekend Zippo and I tore into the goat. There was an oil leak that had developed in the front of the motor that was really irritating me. there was a fuel leak that was likely coming from the fuel pump, the clutch was wearing out and I had ordered the OEM flywheel since the motor was installed last year. Also I was ready to make the switch to mechanical fuel injection. After tearing the motor apart we found the source of the oil leak. there was a 33 cent :twocents: o-ring that had come with my gasket set. the o-ring was too narrow and was leaking badly. a trip to the hardware store solved that problem. As we were putting it back together we installed the new power steering pump that I ordered on Amazon. Then we stopped for a bit to focus on the throttle body. since I was installing the mechanical pump we needed to take the throttle butterflies out of the throttle body and cap the holes so that they wouldn't leak air. So we turned some aluminum plugs that were a press fit and glued them in with some blue lock-tite. The motor had become a real oily mess and most of our time was spent at the parts washer or in the driveway giving things the  brake clean treatment. We then finally installed the fuel pump. I did have to use the electronic fuel pump fuel line in order for the pump to fit in place but it does fit and doesn't foul on the oil dip stick tube. I will be heading over tomorrow again to finish putting the motor together. Unfortunately the transmission wont be able to go back in because the bolts for the new flywheel are 10mm longer, so I had to order them from Japan. We are going to try to test the motor by bolting the bellhousing and old flywheel and starter on.

Yesterday we got some more work done. We got the rest of the engine buttoned up and temporarily installed the flywheel, bellhousing and starter. Then to see if it would fire up we cranked on it for awhile to see if fuel would come out of the injector pipes that we had cracked open. Then I realized that the bolt on the back of the distributive head hadn't been tightened, so I tightened it up and we cranked on it a bit longer but still no fuel coming out of the injector pipes. I had to leave and the battery needed to re-charge so that is where we left it. I am going to take my mity-vac over next time and try to prime the fuel line.

Take a small inline diesel pump ,(4~8psi) and prime it up until the return to tank line is dumping fuel. At that point spin it over at full throttle until the injector lines start spraying fuel. Tighten them and give the engine full acceleration via pump lever or pedal. Should pop off and run. I'm almost certain your idle will need to be adjusted. Engine will probably only run with the throttle actuated partially until adjusted properly. But I'm very happy to see you went with a mechanical pump. You'll like it.

Thanks. We were pumping the inline primer, but I'm certain it's broken. Zippo found a generic replacement on Amazon that should help things along. Also before anyone asks. The tank is full of diesel.

That giant pile of wires hanging over the fender is the loom that is no longer needed after the conversion to a mechanical pump. I drove it home 55 miles from Zippo's house to mine. It drove beautifully and cruised at 70 mph with ease on the cruise control. All that is left is to clean up the wiring and wire in a timer for the glow plug circuit.

While digging through my pile of no longer need wires yesterday I found the possible reason why the E-pump wasn't working right. One of the wires for one of the correction resistors had broken. I guess that is what happens with a 25 year old engine harness. In other news I no longer care about broken wires because the mechanical pump is running the engine so well.

Last week I hooked up my Boost/Vacuum gauge and at peek boost I'm getting 12 psi. Which is the factory setting. With a manual boost controller I can adjust it but I want to wait to do that until I have the pyrometer hooked up to the a gauge.  :burnout:

It would make a world of difference. You would have to upgrade to an R series transmission though.

I ordered a new thermostat. It is a 76°C or 167°F thermostat that should keep the engine much cooler during uphill climbs at the mountain passes.
