so Steve tore down that motor he had and found similar trouble with it. Scored cylinder walls in cylinders 3 & 4. So it seems that oversized pistons are available from Toyota in 0.50, 0.75, 1.00mm O/S. I'm going to take it to the machine shop to see what they think it will take to clean up the cylinders.

That sucks. I guess its a common problem?
Not really, head cracking is the issue.
But not on this one as its been done.
It ran strong when it was together.
Apart from a slight over heating issue due to cracked top tank in the rad.

Yes I do still have the washers to go under the head bolts. I just put the bolts in their holes for storage. I didn't lap the valves because I checked them with Prussian blue and they were very good as they came. Those are the old glow plugs and caps in there too. I need to change them out also.

The blue would have been my next suggestion.

So they are doing a rough bore right now to get rid of any pits. Then he will tell me where the cylinders are at. I'll then order the Pistons and once he has them in-hand, he will do a finish bore with proper oil clearances. They are also going to deck and hot tank it.

I heard from the machine shop today. Cylinder number 3 is beyond what the maximum oversized Pistons could cover. He said normally he would just sleeve it and be done with it but his tool for sleeving is broken and he thought it would be fixed and back to him a month ago. So I need to find a machine shop nearby that will sleeve cylinders.   :bricks:

I did but he said he didn't know of anyone else in the area who does sleeving. I may have found a place, but it is just an Internet search result with decent reviews.

Look for tractor service shops. Most all tractor engine shops can re sleeve. Also big truck shops like peterbilt and international might be able to help you in the right direction.

Oh I know, after what I have already spent on the KZ. I can't afford to switch to KD at this point. But I would love the more efficient, newer motor and the variable geometry turbo.
