yet another gear pattern check
« on: Aug 20, 2013, 12:01:26 PM »
So, I decided to invest in the tools needed to set up gears and give it a try instead of paying someone to do it and not learn anything from it.

Everything went smooth except for the gear pattern, I think I've got a good pattern but I'm not sure. The more I look at gear pattern pictures the more confused I get so, Would you run it like this? I'd appreciate opinions and comments.

The 3rd member is an e-locked high pinion with 5.29.

Looks pretty good, I'd run it no problem! If you have any doubts check out Zuks write ups on gear installs/gear patterns, he has a lot of good info!

Drive side looks good. Coast side might be a little bit set to the toe of the gear. Hard to see how deep the teeth run together. kinda looks like your pinion could run a little deeper on the ring gear. If there's no perceivable play in the pinion and the backlash is good, even with things not being exactly perfect I'm sure it'll run fine.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, I know the pictures are not the best. I've been looking at Zuk's pictures a lot. It has no pinion play and backslash is set at .007" so I'll run it as is then, if it breaks I'll try it again...practice makes perfect, right?

Looks like its running a little deep on the drive side. Also, from the pattern almost looks like you might not have enough load on the side adjusters.

How much torque did you apply to the side adjusters?

Overall, looks good. If this is a DD I would adjust it a little more. If its a weekend / play rig I'd run it as is.

I decided to use the same bearings, they seemed to be in good shape but installed a solid collar. The pinion preload was 6 in. lb. with no oil seal and bearings lubricated, I torqued the small carrier adjuster to 110 ft. lb. and the other as much as I could, backslash was set to .007. IIRC it takes 18 in. lb. to spin the flange as is right now.

Yes, this 3rd member will go into my DD but in the front end so, unless it snows here in Chicago or I go wheeling it will not get used. But, I still have to regear my rear e-locker and I have to do a better job on that one.

I appreciate your comment.

Thanks you sir.

I think I'll put it aside as is then until I find time to mod the axle housing.

If the backlash is at .007", I'd run it. Looks centered, but kinda hard to tell thru the pic.

Yeah, I tried to take good pictures but I guess I suck at it... I'll run it like it is.

I can't wait to go have fun with the truck.

I appreciate your comment.
