E locker 5.29 yukons pattern check (I think I've got it)
« on: Nov 22, 2012, 02:16:28 PM »
I tried setting up my new Yukon 5.29s, but I have an issue. I started with the factory .080" shim and the first two pics are the result with .008 BL. After several shim adjustments, I got all the way up to .100" with .008 BL. And the last two pics are the result. I'm pretty sure this pattern won't work.

I'm reusing the bearings because they still look good and the diff came from an 06 taco that had been wrecked back in 08. The shim kit I got has the following sizes for the pinion bearing .050", .025", .015", and .010". Then the some small precision adjustment shims came with it too, but they go behind the race. And I don't want to damage the oil retainer or use the race shims.

I used the rag and wrench method and put a real hard load on the diff, but my patterns seem real light.

Where can I go with all this? It's going in the rear too. Thanks in advance

You can still go deeper, try a .104 shim, I bet you'll be spot on.

When I setup gears, I run on the SLIGHTLY deeper side. The ring gear is weaker than the pinion.

Right now your pattern is in the middle with the 100 shim, possibly a little shallow. If you need a second opinion, look at the pinion teeth. Shallow on the ring means deep on the pinion. Deep on the ring means shallow on the pinion.

Try a 104 and post back. Remember on the final setup, anti seize the threads and torque to 100ft lbs

Thanks for the quick response NorCalPR! I'm glad to hear that I'm close. I was worried that I was way off.
I will try a this evening. Like I said though, with my small shim selection, my next closest size can only be .105". I don't have any .004" shims

I'm thinking on getting a shim kit from Randy's, but I need to make sure it has the in between sizes in it and not large jumps like I have. I'll update later

Try adding different shims, you may be able to make it work. If not try it out and post back up.

Fwiw, that's what I mean by slightly deep. A bullet pattern that's soft on the edge

Okay, Thanksgiving got the better of me the last couple days. :beerchug: so I am working on the diff right now. I added .004" like NorCalPR recommended and below are the pics of the result with .008" BL.

I actually used my micrometer to measure the shims, and the original shim is .0795", not .080". And my added shim was actually .0198" totaling the combo at .0993".

So add .004" to it I would need a .1033 pack. And I was able to get exactly that with a couple shim swaps.
I like how it looks and I think I may run it.

.1033" pinion shims w/.008" BL

I'm no pro.  I have been reading Zuks site.  The second contact pattern looks better than the first.

What does the pinion marking  look like?  I'm trying to learn.

Yeah I've been looking through all of his setups too. There are a lot of helpful hints.

But I finally decided to settle on the .1033 setup and torqued everything, and set my CBPL, BL, and PPL.

Here is some pics of the final pattern

Beautiful pattern, well balanced.

Looking at the pinion pattern will confirm if you're shallow or deep. If you're deep on the ring, you'll be shallow on the pinion teeth. It's just another way to look at the pattern. Can be really useful if you're not certain about a certain shim pack.

Also fwiw you can run less backlash. I run my setups at .006. I don't have a problem on the street and makes for a stronger setup. I wouldn't go any closer though for a street driven setup

Final one looks good to me.  I have only set up a dozen or so sets.  Your second attempt wasn't too bad anyway though... Every once in a while with a cheap gear set you just can't get a nice pattern no matter what you do. Those cheap gear, lousey setups still last forever in an underbuilt rig, they are just loud.

Anyway good job your final setup looks good!
