I kinda thought so.  The low compression reading you obtained could have been nothing more than a burnt valve.  What I was (am) afraid of is that the blown headgasket wasn't even on the side that you removed, but on the other side.    All I am saying is that it is possible that the water/oil mix is occuring on the other headgasket, and that the low compression side didn't indicate a blown gasket, but another problem altogether.

If you take the heads to a machine shop, I'd suggest re-installing the cams beforehand to prevent loss or misplacing the shims and buckets.  Have the machine shop adjust the valves by installing different/new shims before you return home and then remove the cams for head re-installation.  That way, the valves are all set to spec and that's one less thing to worry about.

Take off that other head and post up some pics of the gaskets.

That doesn't mean anything until you get the head checked.  There usually will be some water found in the cylinder when removing a head, as it runs out of the water passages in the head when you wiggle it around removing it.  I've yet to completely drain a block and not get any water or oil in the cylinders when removing a head on a 22R or a 3.slow

Dont get all spooked yet!  It may be as simple as a blown gasket on the passenger side.  I've worked on tons of 3.0s that come in all milkshaked and running like crap with 250000 miles on them, and all they need is a new exhaust valve or two, and some new headgaskets!!

I'll pull it, but I honestly still dont understand how the pass. would still be registering fine compression wise, and no water in the cylinders, but there was on the drivers side, and have it be the pass. side that has the blown head gasket.  When i did the compression test the first time, there was water in it before we did nything.  we pulled the plugs, and when i was testing the #6 piston, the #4 spit water when crankin the engine  does that mean anything?

Yes, that means that you probably did have some sort of water intrusion to the #4 cylinder, either via a BHG or a crack somewhere.  It is still possible that the oil/water mix is occuring on the other side.   I just don't want you to do all this crap a third time- once is bad enough, and twice just plain sucks.   :beerchug:

Yeah no kidding  :headshake:  I think twice is enough too.  I have alway figured the best way to learn is to ask questions.  Thanks Ryan for all the help and suggestions.  And everyone else, I really appreciate it.  I hope this is the last time I have to do this for a while, so I can go  :driving: again.

Anything else?  mabye make it easier or something??  I will definitely do the camshaft idea Ryan, thanks

The only way to make it easier is to remove/install both heads at once with the exhaust crossover already installed, but do it how you're comfortable.  I'd run a spark plug hole thread chaser thru the spark plugs while the heads are off.  Also, run a die down the headbolts and a bottoming tap (not a regular tap!!) down the bolt holes to clean the threads before reinstalling the headbolts.  Put a little engine oil on them and torque them properly to ensure even load distribution.  Also, replace the knock sensor wire from the sensor to the engine harness if you haven't already.  It's cheap insurance!

It's in west sac, called Ram Auto. Bob is the old guy that runs the machine shop - he has done a ton of stuff for me and he remembers me :)

Don't forget to bring your valve seals etc. I don't remember what he charged to do the heads for my 5.0 when I did my HG's but it was well worth it. Basically take harbor blvd and make a right at the first light (am pm on the corner I think). It's not far down. Another cool place is the speedometer shop across the road from Ram. Totally unrelated but a cool shop - they put my truck on a dyno and but a gear in my tcase to make my speedo right :)

Man you missed some fun at my place this weekend ;)

Got my engine, tranny, tcases pulled. Pulled the front axle. Chopped the frame off behind the cab and stripped it then put it in my trailer to go to the trash. Spent the better part of today building a nice fence to block off my wrecking yard :)

Hey brandon, just curious did you pull that shock mount of the cross member??  If not dont worry about it.  Sounds like it would have been fun.  I was in old sac all day yesterday, doing the valentines day thing.  I coulda worked on my truck, but I dont think it would have gone over very well :shudder:  Thanks Ryan.  I ripped the wires on the knock sensor in half, so I will be getting another one  :smack:  I wish i could do the crossover, but once of the nuts on the exhaust downpipe is completely rounded off.

cool.  gonna try to pull the pass. side head and get it down to the shop.  How long does it usually take??  do you know?  I think I'll take a day off work and get the truck back together once I get the heads back.

Oh yeah, that reminds me, Yosh and I got busted yesterday by one of the complex employees :smack:  right in the middle of pulling the head, had the radiator, upper intake, lower intake, and valve cover with camshaft sitting around the truck, and we hear " what the hell are you guys doing?"  I hit my head on the hood of the truck i juerked up so fast, and yosh almost fell off the tire he was standing on.  She was cool though, just said dont make a mess and its ok.  ITs good cause she is the property patrol, and not one of the other ladies, cause the other ladies are  :tantrum: so I'm sure we will see her more.

Ok Blackdog-

I'm curious to hear what the machine shop has to say about your heads...  be sure to clean the heck out of the block surface before you set the heads back down on there.  I usually use a scotch-brite pad on a die grinder, but if you don't have that just use regular scotch-brite and a straight razor blade.  The cleaner the better!  Post up some close-up pics of the Headgaskets that you removed if you can...

I guess it's just the picture.  Usually there is a rupture between the cylinder crush ring and the water jacket ring, or betw. the water jacket ring and the oil passage.  I'll post up some pics of my blown headgasket from the Supra when I get home so you can compare.  I blew it in like 6 places...  Amazing what 20psi of boost will do to a stocker... :eyebrow:
