Had a rebuilt 22re. Sold it for $600. Bout a rebuilt 3rz for $500. Already had oil pan conversion done. Bought a bellhousing from a place in Oregon for $70 shipped. New cap rotor and other misc stuff for $150 (with fluids).  I already had an electric fan and other junk so it was just a matter of making motor mounts (with bushings I already had laying around), exhaust which i made and putting it in. Wired it up and it was running/driving in right around 5 days of working on it.
Majority of people doing this swap would not have these extra things that you had just laying around.  And at some point they would have cost you some money too.  Sounds like you did the motor swap for pretty inexpensive which is cool.  And it sounds like my estimate is high but also sounds like most people are into their motor swaps $1000 or more when it's all said and done.

I just dont see how it could even be remotely close to $3000. You could find a complete donor truck for around $1500 and bank off that thing + have a new motor with all the parts needed (except maybe exhaust work done at a shop)
But I guess I am not experienced since I have not done a 3rz swap.

jrock

Well lets see here.... motor swap is on the back burner but shortening my wheel base has been completed.

I moved my rear axle forward 3" and changed my springs to MC 4" thanks to CrazyKooter. Cut the hangers off and moved them forward. I put 10" Bilstiens on the rear, replacing the dead Ranchos. Removed the double shackles and put in single 5.5" shackles, cut the hanger and moved it forward.

Issues: I put too much angle on the rear shackles but hopefully it will soften the rear suspension. Also, the rear 4" are more than 2.5" taller than the worn MC4" fronts, so, I have 200lbs of wood in the bed of the truck trying to sag it. Also, the truck now sits lower on the driver side  I'm still trying to figure why.

No pictures yet, tomorrow maybe, if I remember :P

:attention:Take a pic!  I want to see how they sit on ur rig.  Sit level ?  ride height ?

Butt end is still too high. Ive been running around with 500lbs of wood in the bed to squat it down, its working pretty good. They've gone negative a few times :)

jrock

With weight in the bed to sag the rear.

Im not entirely happy with the rear shackle angle but its not enough of a problem to concern me before Hammers. Ill end up using 7" shackles or put some Revolvers in and relocate them.

shackle angle looks great!  wow, the paints holding up good.  still looks shiny!

Shackle angle looks pretty good. Did you take any leafs out of the rear packs? Maybe that would help :dunno:

I think the previous owner of the springs removed a leaf, I havent touched them yet.

Been following this build for a while and I just realized we have the exact same dent going across our bed.

Truck looks good! I found that by the time you throw in the full size spare tire and camping gear, tool box and spare parts, you will be good.

Whats your new wheel base? were you getting hung up or just wanted a tighter turning ability of the shorter wheel base?

I would pull a leaf or two if the weight doesn't help out in the back then.

Truck is looking good :smokin:

Thank you. It will be great once the camping gear is loaded but for most trails, I try to get in, setup camp and unload. That way I can wheel unloaded.

About 111" and I did do it mostly for the turning radius. Though, the rear hangers now, protect my driveshaft and gas tank much more betta :gap:

Thank you, I may pull a long leaf just for KOH, but Im hoping I dont have too. I prefer now to mess with engineered systems. But if I must, I must.

jrock

The lean issue has been diagnosed, it is a sagging MC 4" front driver spring. It has only become noticeable because of the newer, softer, rear springs. I am going to swap the fronts left to right. Maybe after KOH, if its still an issue, I will make a short spacer spring for the sagging side.

jrock

Today I swapped my front springs left to right, right to left and it really helped the unwanted lean. I pulled a long leaf out of the rear packs and it leveled out the truck.

Im starting to think I have 3" springs in the front, they say Marlin Front 33 on them. Oh well, the truck is level

Belly height is 20"
Frame height is 24.25"
Center of Head Light is 44"

:driving:

PS, No more KOH  :(  :rivers: :outtahere:

crazykooter

Looks good bud.  Would like to see a pic without all the crap in the back.
Those marlin springs I found you are 4" but they really act like 5" even tho they are like 4-5 yrs old.
Guess he built those MCREAR4 spring very well.

I havent got to my rear springs yet.  Ive been doing a lift on a cherry 85 runner.
Completely rebuilt the front axle and painted it up so it looks like new.
Plus I installed a LC header and had to pretty much fab a whole new exhaust out the back.  Def sounds better.

When in doubt, skinny pedal!

Pictures later.

No KOH cuz money ran out :( I'm just too far away.

crazykooter

YA I couldnt afford it.  I want to wheel my rig when I go anyhow.

crazykooter

Looks good...nice and low

jrock

I will need to add some bump stops in the rear but other than that its done. I took it on a long stretch of whoops yesterday and it it SO much better than it was before. The weight balance was right on and it floated without bottoming out like it did before. I still want to put some air bumps in the front but its not a big deal yet.

The 4.7s are wonderful but I cant see a good reason yet to actually use them doubled down. I did use my crawl box for stock low with the rear case for 2wd/4wd and I used the rear case in 4l with the trans in 2nd and reverse. It all works wonderfully.

What I need to do is put an overdrive pulley on my steering pump. At 1k RPM the pump does everything like I want it to but below that, it lacks. If I'm idling or just barley above, the pump cannot keep up with the ram and I end up fighting it. Not good when I'm getting off the throttle to make an emergency move just to have the steering bind up :(

That is where I want to be with about a 112 wb on my 37" Hmmwv tires

Looks good. I'll be re doing my rear shackle soon to get a little better travel and nicer ride. As it is my rear shackle is nearly vertical at ride height.

Any other projects you have planned?

I'm still looking and planning for some type of cage. I've been really leaning towards an internal cage, preferably 4xInovations. But with an internal I wil have to change my seats too something a lot lower, like buckets. I really like PRP's crawler seats. Then there will be the challenge of mounting the cage to the body and then the frame without getting too much engine vibe into the body. And then mounting the seats and harnesses into the roll cage.

Should be fun. It won't happen for a while.

crazykooter

If i were to get new seats I would get suspension seats.  They are the bomb for the trail.
