tacoma setup for sure. its just better over all. You are obviously in muddy conditions and slotted/drilled rotors are going to do nothing but chew your brakes up even faster
thats a good point, I do see mud more often than just dry rocks.

I got the fror kit, should be installing it soon. I really like the whole setup, especially the "toyota unit bearing". I'm using 4runner calipers since they use the same brake fitting as the mini trucks, but if you already have Tacoma calipers might as well use those. Like THK said if you really want a big upgrade you can go to Tundra brakes too.

Since you already have most of the parts for a conversion that's the way I'd go.

I just saw you asking about this Glen, here's what i'm doing...

Putting 86 IFS hubs on my SFA spindles, then if you grind off some metal just outside where the lug studs come through the hub, a 1997 Tacoma rotor will fit on the outside of the hub, over the lug studs, just like on a Tacoma. You have to use IFS calipers from either a 6cyl or a 4cyl truck. Here's a write-up by someone who did it already. http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=63910.0 There's a more in-depth description of the mod a little less than halfway down the page.

If you want i can finish it up by this weekend and tell you how it worked for me. I'm gonna be doing it to Tom's 84 4Runner as well. I don't like how that guy ran the bolts through behind the rotor, so i'm gonna tack nuts onto the caliper ears and run the bolts through from the knuckle side. I promise i won't use red locktite on the threads...remember that parking lot fiasco at Gilmer?

:haha:  yea I remember that guy :rofl2:   I bet he learned his lesson.

for those that werent there.  this guy did the LC rotors and calipers on the outside of the ears and used RED lock tight on every single bolt and nut.  including his lug nuts :shake:

it was all fine and dandy til he broke a birfield

well friends, I didnt get the tacoma stuff done, the taco rotors I had were kinda worn down (although in hind site they could have easily been replaced later  )

SO, I got some LC rotors for $25 each at Autozone, and had some V6 calipers but I do not think I can grind enough off to make my wheels work without wheel spacers

79coyotefrg

well kids,  my wheels will not work with the V6 calipers. I used some 4cyl ifs calipers and still had to grind a little off them so I need to find some wheel spacers.  I have a good ifs steering box I can trade for.

for all you 79 owners out there I have the plan on what to do if you want to put Land Cruiser rotors on your oddball hubs.   just gotta drill 4 holes

I'll bring parts for the conversion and help you do it when i get there in 2 weeks or so, ok?

i need another V6 caliper but besides that I got the land cruiser rotors installed on the 79's hubs.  even took pictures so I could make a nice little writeup later.

the way my wheels are made I have to have the spacers.   even if I did install the ifs hubs and put the calipers on the outside of the ears I would still need spacers to get my wheels to fit.

once I get spacers I CAN run the v6 calipers

right now my drivers side caliper is froze up

79coyotefrg

for those 79 and 80 owners you don't need to swap to 81-85 hubs.  just drill 4 holes.

79 pickup hub

LandCruiser rotor

Land cruiser rotor sitting on the 79 hub. notice the two small holes are lined up with two of the holes that the 79 rotor used to bolt to the 79 hub

79coyotefrg

then using a 5/16 drill bit line up the threaded holes and drill the new 4 holes in the rotor.

once they are drilled remove the rotor and use a 3/8 drill bit and open them up so the bolts slip through and then bolt it on with the original 6 bolts.

but  the wheel bearing looked fine and turned by hand almost as smoothly as the new one so I am keeping it for a spare I guess :dunno:

So i'm wondering what made you think the wheel bearing was going out in the first place?

Instead of the thread title being "Glen's budget rebuild", i think you should rename it "Glen's  on-a-budget perpetual rebuild"...every time you fix something something else gives out.  :therethere:

after 8 years (installed in July 2006) of HARD miles and some unreal loads I will be pulling the transmission and engine out soon to fix them both.  trans has been falling out of first gear for a while and hopping out of second.  since they share a rail I HOPE its the detent spring. :praying:

cant believe I didnt update this part.
The transmission popping out of gear was indeed a broken detent spring.  with a little help from Marlin over the phone texting instructions I fixed it with a spring from a parts transmission I was keeping for a rainy day :)

the head appears to have a tiny crack in it between three and four. but I've got a couple good 22R heads. no money for building the other one. just new bearings and rings for the .060 over block and new pilot and throwout bearing.  the Marlin 1200 lb clutch has very little wear on it after 13 years (bought it in 2002) so its going back in.
