that is very intense. and after all those welds you have to go and bend your :pokinit: up. what a rip off. and I thought stick welding the SVOG groove took forever! Definitely gotta have some patience in welding though. Especially on the beveled stuff.
how do you bend test your welds? phat press or something?

damn, that class seems pretty overkill for what people do in the real world for welding.

82 HiLux

the idea of training is to have been through everything, so that way when you weld stuff outside of class, youve already done it all and know what to do in any situation. overkill in a welding class is good!
82 hilux, bobbed, really fast 22r, 2 transfer cases, ARB's, 5.29's, 37" MTR's. Custom everything.

we use a destructive guided bend test (a big press than crushes it like a "U" with the weld joint at the bent, so if theres any perfections it will open up..rip..or break if its severe. its nothing fancy but its what they usually use to cert and one of the hardest to pass.

its definitely way overkill if your only going to work in a fab shop that doesn't hold to any weld codes, and don't plan on making welding a career, which is like 80% of everything, but if you want a fully legit welding job and be able to weld ships, pressure vessels, brewery's, oil lines, underwater welding, nuclear plants, turbines in damns, etc, you need all the :pokinit: we are learning. In my opinion welding is one of those careers where you can either keep it low key or you can take it really far, you can still have a good job and know how to weld really well with MIG, or you can do some crazy :pokinit:, go places with it, make lots of money, and travel the world.

right now our school is a partner ship with PG&E. they are hiring up to 10 students at the end of the year to be a part of their welding crew. the pay and benefits are amazing you start off at 30$ an hour being a pregnant dog worker under a journeymen for 1 1/2 years. but the company doesn't interest me much because all they do is pipe welding and its all the same, and its similar to the military where they work on seniority and its all about you going where every, when ever, and what ever they want you to do, and you don't have a say until you have worked for them for quit a whole. not trying to bash on pg&e because they are a great company and they do what they do very well, but im looking for something more exciting. might as well shoot for something higher and hopefully still have the opportunity to go work for them later down the road, if something doesn't work out.

Matt hill graduated form Butte college welding and is an excellent tig welder. he kept up with doing some pretty intense stuff and worked for a traveling weld construction company for a few years then ended up becoming a full time tig welder for Sierra Nevada Brewery, welding all their stainless pipe. this guy knows his :pokinit: and is certified in many fields. hes basically living the life. makes lots of money working at a bitchin place.

my point is you don't realize how large welding is or the places you can go, or the things you can do until your in a welding program specifically designed for careers. i honestly had NO idea how intense this field was until i got into the college welding program, and its only getting larger.

wampum

Yeah dude I was thinking it would be sick to get on PG&E as a welder because they make bank and benefits are good. But like you said it would probably be a pretty boring welding job. I think it would be cool being a structural welder on like buildings and stuff. Or even doing fabrication would be sick, but I don't know how strong of a career that is.

industrial and construction types of welding are definately a strong career.  now if you are going into custom fab stuff for things like different types of motorsports, it can be alot harder to make it.  i know a few  guys who have custom fab shops. they are'nt making bank but they love what they do.  industrial types of jobs will pay better and have better benefits just about 100 percent of the time.

I imagine trying to own/operate any kind of shop would be a gamble, but fabrication would be a lot of fun if I could live off of it.

ya its really hard to get a fab shop going to where you can be busy full time and make bank. there has to be some highly wanted specialization that your fab shop can do that most others cant so people will come to you, you are able to charge a decent price, and still have customers coming.

wampum

Does High Angle count as a fab shop? I imagine he does OK.

its really not that cool.... they came and did a demo on six inch pipe...

and the mains that run through are some stupid :pokinit: like 6 or 4 inch pipe, not big at all

-Matt-

ya plus a big flame melting your :pokinit: would get old after doing it a few times, and all they usually do is a downhill drag on the pipe, which would get wayy old imo. and supposedly if you are caught without ear plugs in your ass will be fired.

back when i took weld20 marvin use to say, back in then you would have time to make it beautiful, now you have to work fast to pump out the work so you dont get to take your time to make your beautiful welds, you just drag it and get it out! or something like that, it was a a few semesters ago

i dont think the 4runners look that good bobbed. that just me though. so matt you wanna be hardcore and do my rear driveline?

slabcs

Is it me or is that 4Runner not bobbed?

Edit: After staring at it... I guess it might be... That's super super minimal if it is.  It's messing with my head.
Relentless

thought id mess around with photo shop a bit and see what my runner would look like with a 6-7 inch bob and some exo ideas. exo isnt to serious i was jsut messing around but i actually like the bob. im not a fan of a major bob job on runner, i think it looks to weird, but i also think they look to long when there stock. what do you guys think about taking 6 inches out?

edit - this is pretty old picture of the runner so it already looks a decent amount different but its all i have of a side profile on my computer

4runner17

wampum

I'm digging that exo design. But I don't know about 4Runner bobs, how do you go about doing the fiberglass?
I like the idea Y_K posted up here, though. I think that would be sweet.
