Awesome!
kinda windy today, suposed to rain but who knows.

IronClad

No dice on the bearing  :-\

Only got a little bit done today.. finished up my brakes, couldnt stand being out in the cold/windyness any longer >.<  but i took some obligatory poser flex shots.

Went as far as i could till my cherrypicker wanted to fall over and the rear bumper i welded on that i havent cut the ends off was digging into the tire =P   My upper coil mounts on the front are kinda ugly but i'll cap the end and do a little bracing when i build my shock mounts.. dont really see any problem with them though, I wana wheel!

wind died down so gonna go try and do a bit more.  Anyone local have one of the low pressure   nipple things for the steering box? my  high pressure and low pressure + that thing seem to be missing from when it was in paradise.. High pressure will be easy but that low pressure thing will be a pain in the ass to find.

Nothing really to report today.. just did some stuff like raise my tcases, fumble with my exhaust  for a few hours since my down pipe was bent.. and mess with my fuel pump  which i now have to hotwire for some reason. Soo tomarrow im going to pick up my drive shaft stuff and  hotwire my fuel pump and take a hotlap down the street and see if i cant piss my neighbors off :D

Was this the truck that was at Eric Bass' shop? The rims and tires look familiar.

Tell me how you have a 6 bolt pattern 14 bolt axle.

I know its possible but I've been told its a pregnant dog to build.

IronClad

just a little machine work

really isnt that hard.. probably an hour per side including welding the stud holes

fun fun
I drove my rig today.
only to the corner but made me feel good.

ps why go 8 lug? when you already have 6 lug

gotrocks

So are those the stock 14 bolt hubs or did you use the specific Dana 60 hub I've been told has to be used?

I have 2 14bolts sitting around and I want to use them and not have to find another rear 60 but from what I've been told and the research I've tried to do on making them a 6 lug it seems that its not worth my time and that i should just find a 60 and cut the ends off and run Moser shafts and weld on 9" semi float outer ends.  This is what my buggy has and I really it but like I said I already have 2 14 bolt axle and I don't really want to go and find another axle.

IronClad

They are just 14 bolt hubs  with the centers turned down a bit  and the front/back faced flat so that you can drill and run studs easily through. setup with a typical half ton brake rotor.

Basicly when we made these we took them apart  chucked them in a  lathe and went to town just chunking steel off the backside  to get it flat all the way across. then we went to the front and faced it a tad, Welded up the holes  and let it cool for a little bit then faced it again. After that we then started to slowly turn down the  part the bearings sit in so that a 6 lug 15" wheel would fit over them.  large bore aluminum wheels will fit but most dont unless you really get with it on removing material or bore the center of the wheel out, pretty much all steel wheels fit.

Also unless you want to remove the axle shaft everytime you want to take the tire off you will need to machine the flange down on the axle shaft and go to a button head style bolt  since they dont have as big of an OD as a flanged bolt.

Anyway after we got everything faced and so that a wheel would fit perfectly over the hub body we used a wheel spacer we had on hand but you could use a wheel or whatever we slid it over and center punched everything (self centering punch kind!) and chucked it up in the mill and drilled the holes. You could do it in a drill press but it would probably take just a little longer.

Honestly to me  making a 60 with 9" ends sounds like more of a headache than doing a little machine work. Plus with not having truely custom shafts you dont have to worry about anything  if you do infact snap one.

The 9" setup is really easy to do actually and the shafts I have are stronger than stock 14b shafts.  So in terms of breaking it I'm not worried, and when you by them if one breaks they don't need any lead time because they spline like 8 inches or something like that and you just cut down them down do your size.

Thanks for the step by step.  I used to work as a machinist and it wouldn't scare me to attempt this I just didn't know how some guys were doing it and if it was even worth my time.

IronClad

ya np  if you have the machining experience  then this would be a piece of cake.. its really just chunking off material and welding/redilling . Also i used disk brake brackets from ruffstuff they are press bent. if you use stock 1/2ton chevy rotors you will have to actually cut part of the disk bracket off and weld it on further out on the spindle rather than bolting them on, Unless of course you make a spacer for the disk to push it back to the center of the axle more.
