Alright, so I am in serious need of an update, but I dont feel like posting pictures now, so they will have to come later.  Since my last post I have installed my dual cases, got my driveshafts modded, reinstalled and I now have 4wd again, finally, and I freakin love the low gearing.  And I dont even have 529s yet for the diffs!  I also got some 36" iroks that I scored a while back mounted and balanced on some steel wagon wheels, and put on 1.5" spacers all around for them to clear the springs.

I have a problem though.  I am yet another victim of the Death wobble in front now, and I have been running though the possible causes.  The tires were just balanced yesterday, but I understand that can only do so much.  The trunion bearing test checks out, as theres no play in the tires from top to bottom. I have adjusted and rechecked my toe in. I am not fully convinced that the tires are the problem, as I did experience a slight wobble off and on even with my 33s. Knuckle Preload could be the culprit I guess.  I think I am going to check all of the hardware in my steering setup(99%sure its not that) then throw on the old 27inchers and take her for a ride to rule out tires, then really fine tune the alignment, and finally I guess I gotta go through and make sure the preload is good.  Worst comes to worst I guess 10ounces of airsoft pellets in the tires is my last resort.  Any other ideas???  BTW when I hit about 35 I get my teeth shaken out until I bring the truck to a complete stop and then start off again.

Definitely check the knuckles. I had the same death wobble in my 85 runner and it turned out to be the knuckle bearings had munched themselves. New bearings, races, and proper shims fixed it right up.

THIS THREAD WILL RISE AGAIN...... someday...

I fell off the wagon for awhile, but have been daily driving my rig everyday and modifying here and there along the way.  I finally made a purchase Ive been putting off way to long and am stoked....
Heres the rear diff.... 529's with an aussie locker

82juguete

And I also got an open front diff with 529's as well.
Anyway, heres the housing I have been working on here and there since the last time I posted on this thread...

I fabbed up some lower trusses with notches for the U-bolts, and welded on some trick shock mounts and a diff cover from Blue Torch Fab.

The day I did the swap and installed the gears... thats my cousins runner.  He was putting on a 3" Old Man Emu lift that day.  Itll be awhile before I convince him to cut all that IFS crap off.

BTW I built this adjustable light bar for him the weekend before.... It was tricky integrating some flat mounts that Tie into the existing ski rack, and we utilized magnets in the front there to secure the rack to the roof without having to drill or weld..The thing actually ended up really solid.

82juguete

So I got the rear diff installed, the brakes hooked up and bled, axle reassembled, and replaced a U-bolt that got stripped out.  (Now I use a torq wrench at 90 ft lbs...haha.) Anyways, I discovered the tripple drilled flange doesnt mate up to my driveshaft.  I was able to rotate the pinion flange to a perfect spot, and redrill 4 new holes, basically creating a quad drilled flange.  I opted to do this instead of partially slotting 2 of the existing holes.  Anyway, I put in 2.5 quarts of gear oil, took it for a test drive, and everything is working perfectly....even with the 33s its like a new truck..I Even accelerated out of a few turns and heard a beautiful chirping to confirm the lockers functioning well..  IM STOKED

82juguete

Today I buttoned up a few things...

Heres my take on upper shock mounts...

1x3 box tube with little square tube extensions to get the shocks perpendicular to the axle...welded on some nuts and viola! I think it will be plenty strong...plus its really a temporary solution to keep my shocks from bottoming with those tall lower mounts...

82juguete

Also eliminated the lspv rod today, and engineered a solution.. a little aluminum angle, and an eye bolt to create a way to adjust the valve.

Heres some pics of it all finished up....

Heres one more...this also shows my mini "bedcage" with flip up spare carrier so that I can still load some fair sized stuff in my bed... I wasnt sure If I ever posted anything on that....

Hopefully more to come...I wanna get the front diff in this week!!!    :beerchug:

Well I started pulling apart the fornt axle this morning, to install the new third... what do you know, things didnt go as planned.   :headscratch: I got the passenger side disassambled and the birf/shaft out just fine, but the drivers side put up one hell of a fight.  I knew that my housing was slightly bent on the drivers side, but didnt realize it was so bad that I cannot get the birf out at all, therefore I cant remove the diff.  It appeared as though the spindle nut had been backing off as well, and the threads were jacked up and the shaft had a lot more play than on the pass side.  So I think the bent housing was brewing up more touble than I thought.  Luckily a buddy of mine has a spare housing im going to check out tomorrow.  I think that and a knuckle rebuild while im at it should do the trick....

And I thought I was just gonna swap out the diffs....  yea right

THK Matt

damn dude.... build the other housing/axle up?

So I went ahead and got the knuckles pulled off yesterday, and finally got that birf out, after a lot of prying, pulling, and cursing...

82juguete

Heres the surgeons table...

Anyway, the axle shaft slid out pretty rough, and I didnt want to mess with this bent housing anymore....

82juguete

So I called up a buddy of mine... hes got a pretty built first gen, but just has too many projects and is getting out of the game so to speak...  Proof that there are still good people around HE GAVE ME THIS!!!

YEs thats right...an early front axle, hub to hub, with truss and ball gussetsalready welded on....btw he owns a welding shop, so the trusses are way better than I ever couldve done...

82juguete

And as if that wasn't enough, he threw this in as well...

Complete knuckle rebuild kit....

Even though he said to just take it, I'm still gonna get some cash together for him this week, I feel to guilty just accepting this stuff...
Thanks a bunch AJ... you really helped me out of a bind...

82juguete

Well heres that housing all stripped down....

Now I got spare birfields too!! :yesnod:

82juguete

Front diff...the original reason for all this

Open 529s...And I believe these are brand new yukons

82juguete

Got it bolted in the housing and used some permatex ultra grey...

82juguete

And here it is...hard to tell but that drivers side bend was enough to make that axle shaft stick in there pretty good...

If anyone wants to mess with straightening it, let me know...

82juguete

Finally got the new housing all bolted up

And popped in some of Marlins HD Seals :bling: :bayer: :afro:

All in all, Its been a pretty busy weekend....  Beginning of this week Ill hopefully get those knuckles rebuilt...I gota get new wheel bearings and a couple other things from marlin first...

46&2

I will be doing basically the same thing to my 4runner here soon, just got to get the motivation to do it in 100 degree heat. i need to rebuild my front and rear axles..knuckles, wheel bearings, seals, everything. Looking at those pics is kind of getting me motivated  :gap:

Its not that bad, its just messy... Just be prepared to devote your entire driveway or garage to all the oil, grease, rags, parts and hardware you will need to keep organized... Oh and be prepared to feel like you jumped in a gritty, dirty pool with all your clothes on at the end of each day...haha yea this heat has been killer....wasnt too bad today though
