And the PURDY head, resurfaced with a valve job and looking brand new...

82juguete

I'm ready to get this thing back together ASAP, but with a wise understanding of the way things tend to go, I'll be stoked if im back on the road in 2-3 weeks

82juguete

Got some stuff painted today and couldnt resist throwin it together to get a preview...

also painted the oilpan and timing cover since i had leftover paint

I CANT WAIT TO FINISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that engine is looking sweet!
when you are bolting the head onto the engine, make sure to torque the very front head bolt that goes down into the timing cover to 9 FOOT POUNDS  otherwise you will break the timing cover.  i try to share that with as many people as possible because its easy to over torque that bolt and break the timing cover. i like that red paint

Yea it would, but i just need to get this thing back on the road.  I dont need an added variable until i get it fired back up...then i might consider EFI further down the road.

UPDATE!!!

Engine is in... i got a few days worth of hooking up lines, wires and such and its time to fire her up!

Yea i cant wait...

Hey can someone post some pics of the heater tube setup that mounts to the back of the timing cover on the drivers side?  I seem to have misplaced it and im drawing a blank on what it looks like...and where it goes to

82juguete

Anyone???  I just got these few odds and ends and then im hopin to fire this thing later this week

82 HiLux

i could take a picture for you tomorrow when its light out. i have the same motor. send me a PM so i dont forget

82juguete

Alright so i am missing an important piece and after looking at a buddies junk 22r im finding that the heater tube is something like this

It mounts here:

Goes under the header like this and then theres a section of hose joining it to another hard pipe that goes to the bottom of the intake somewhere... is this correct??:

I dont really understand what this does... were all 22r's like this?  I cant seem to locate the hard pipe on the bottom of the intake, and i basically left that alone when i pulled the motor...

really confused and the fact that these seem to be the only parts i cant find has me baffled!
:headscratch:

82juguete

Also, I am assuming that this hose connects here, again on the drivers side down by the header

but on 2 other trucks ive looked at, this little port off the hard pipe is just plugged off...is this because they are bypassing the heater???

When I put the header on my 84 I just unbolted that bs. one of them is from the exaust side and it preheats the intake or something or other? not exactly sure but thats what I was told. The one on the intake I have always seen even on 20rs but if you dont have one and it doesnt leak im sure you dont need it because I forgot to tighten mine one the 84 and it leaked everywhere. It shouldnt hook into the one on the exaust side either. The one on the exaust side only has air going threw it no water.

I think your talking about the tube that recirculates exhaust back around the block and to that asv valve or whatever on the pass side.  I did eliminate that since the header has no provisions for it, but this other tube comes directly off the timing cover and follows almost the same route...

I took pics of what you need. I'll post them in a few.

Ok, after a little picture taking and "fancy" editing, here you go:

Driver side:

Passenger side, just in case you need it too

Hope this clears it all up. Advice is nice but backing it up with pictures is best.

thanks a lot man, but i got it figured out...just needed that blockoff plate and it was still stuck to the old timing cover.  That weird setup i saw mustve been only on a few years of 22r.  Thanks for posting the pics though, i really appreciate it.

ALmost got to fire the motor today but the water pump is leaking like crazy, so i need to pull it off tomorrow, check it, redo the gasket and seal it up better i guess... i hope to God thats all it takes...  :crossed:

82juguete

Well i pulled the pump today, and the gasket was all retarded looking... i dont know how i missed it initially, but it was the wrong shape right where the leak formed and there was no gasket on the mating surface at all in that area.  Nice, easy fix right?  Well i put a new, better fitting gasket on with some high-tack spray, torqued it on and put some water in, only to find another small leak coming from around the water bypass tube.  So frustrating.  Im pulllin that tomorrow to reseal it...but if its the timing cover thats leaking ima be a little pissed.

89sastoyo

nice thats good to hear and yeah thats the same one i didnt tighten and it leaked but good o hear you got it covered let us know how the motor runs

82juguete

Finally took care of the leaks!!!  :woohoo: Pulled the water tube today and i dont know how it got overlooked... there was some old gasket material i missed and the whole flange itself was warped right toward the middle where the tube is supposed to mate to the timing cover.  I cut the gasket out, which i think should be a seperate gasket anyway, and made a new one outta gasket material.  Used another bypass tube in better shape, sealed it up good, bolted it back on, pulled the t-stat and filled up the block with water...NO LEAKS.  just need to bolt up the stuff i had to undo and get the rad back from getting re-cored and God-willing this thing will breathe, hopefully tuesday.

82juguete

It finally runs....

but theres a catch.

Oil pump started leaking like crazy, and given that its sealed with an o-ring, its clear that it has failed in one way or another.  Oil seems to be leaking from the lower left bolt on the pump, and pulling this bolt verifies this,as oil almost streams out when the bolt is removed.  Removing bolt also reveals that the hole is stripped and will need to be heli-coiled tomorrow.  This could also be the source of the leak since stripped bolt couldnt torque properly.  All in all its a pretty accessible fix, and i was really happy with how the motor runs (minus said leak)

82juguete

Got the oil pump leak fixed, o-ring got chewed up between the edge of the outer pump gear somehow  :shake: ..  Got it back together and fixed a small coolant leak where the heater hose meets the firewall and actually got to drive it!   :driving:

Now ive got a couple of questions... being that i have never experienced a brand new clutch before, is it normal for there to be a slight whirring sound upon engagement?  It only happens briefly and goes away when the clutch is fully released.  Its a marlin 1200 lb clutch and i did new pilot, throwout, the works.  Keep in mind my shifter covers are still off, so drivetrain noise is a lot more noticeable than usual.  Anything out of the ordinary with that noise??

Also, my odometer stopped turning at 279699, so i was curious if anyone had ideas for how to monitor my mileage during this critical break in period.  Fixing the odo would be the best but i understand its quite an ordeal, and im not even sure if something is busted beyond repair.  Keeping a manual log on paper of mileage is most likely what ill do, but i know its pretty inaccurate...

Pretty stoked on gettin it rolling again, and cant wait to break it in and open this thing up.

gmack192

what brand of header are you using? and where did you find it??    Thanks

82juguete

Header brand unknown, i havent really seen any others like it... and i bought it from TRACKER on this board.  It fits nicely and doesnt leak so im happy with it...
