I wonder what springs Marlin sends you; import or domestic. :dunno:

I thought they only had a few rear import springs left a few weeks ago. I would expect the newest design from Betts.

Can you really ruin a Detroit by snapping birfs?  I haven't heard of that before.  I have a lock right in the front of mine and broke birfs.  What happens to the Detroit when a birf let's go?

The axle twists until it snaps right, well when it does break all that twisting motion snaps back and spins the Detroit backwards while everything including the other axel is going forward. the ratchet design of the Detroit cant take the backlash.  The lunchbox locker that you got will disengage faster preventing it from breaking.  That's the only way I've read that people break em, and their not covered under warranty when an axel breaks.

MiniSimp

That's exactly why you run an Aussie, they guarantee almost anything.

If you are going to run a Detroit in a Toyota, make sure you have 30 spline Longfields or run it in the rear axle.

They need to guarantee that their gonna make me a V6 locker  :yesnod:

MiniSimp

From what they have told me, they are working on the final design, but do not have any release date.

Only three more packages then it's on like Donkey Kong  :fakeflip: :muscles:

Got some good news back from aussie today. :yesnod:

E-mail from Aussie

"Patric,

We have one developed and released for manufacturing. We are expecting them
to be in production in late Feb or early March."

That's some good news considering that's around the time I'll be getting my gears done. I  it when things work out in time.

Fearofrunner

Alright it's been awhile since I've updated so here we go

4 CYL and V6 5.29's

V6 bearing kit

4 CYL bearing kit, I was worried that this kit got jipped of some shims but after a phone call to marlin stewie explained that this kit doesn't come with as many shims as the V6  Thanks stew

Fearofrunner

Also the front u-bolts,  :turtle: sent me the round u-bolts for the 83 axel which are round and wouldn't work on the 84-85 axel. They were nice enough to send me the square u-bolt free of charge... :psss:... they also let me keep the round one's too for spares.

Pinion Bearing difference V6 on the left 4 CYL on the right

Carrier bearing difference, V6 on the left 4 CYL on the right.  This is the only difference between the two is the bearings are bigger which means a beefier 3rd member.  I'm actually thinking now that i should have just bought two V6 R/P and bearing kit but I'm not sure if the carrier in the 4CYL would match up or not.  That's also the difference is the carrier being a 4 pinion in the V6 and a 2 pinion in the 4 CYL.  Pinion means the shaft supporting the spider gears 4 CYL only has one bar holding two of the spider gears apart while the V6 has a u-joint looking deal supporting all four of the spider gears. (correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I've heard/seen.

Fearofrunner

Solid spacers VS the crush sleeve, V6 on the left, 4 CYL on the right.

I've been tryin to find someone  to do my gears and the only place locally is six states and they wanted 300 per 3rd member!!! :yikes:  Screw that... luckily my buddy is friends with a guy that has a 79 bronco that's all rock crawled out that said the dana front axles are similar to the toyota 3rd and said he would do it for $75 buck each, now that's more like it :beerchug:

Fearofrunner

Worked on grinding the rest of the old brackets off the axle tonight and got a question for you guys.  The two remaining brackets that are closes to the drums look to me like the old shock mounts.  :smack:  Is this true? If so I'm thinking of taking them off because it would be a snagging point for rocks.  If i remember right the marlin kit comes with new shock mounts for the rear axle anyways.

I know you guys are diggin my work bench, it's the easiest way to move that heavy pig. :outtahere: :usa:

Volcom

Yea, cut them off.  You will need to mount your shocks with something like this

OK i got some updates, first off V6 gears should be done either today or tommorrow  Aussie still hasn't come out with a V6 locker  hopefully they do sometime this month. Now for the updated pictures...

this is where she'll be parked for a while

Im sure alot of you are familiar with how much fun it is tryin to get the 20+ year old bolts out of the spring hangers and shackle hangers... after alot of hours of BFHing, :flamer: sawsall and alot of tobacco I just decided to hack the bastids

Fearofrunner

that worked

even with the whole thing out and me standing over the bolts slamming with the back side of an axe i still had a hell of a time getting the remaining bolts out

Theres your problem :haha:

Toyota and their sleeved bushings  :shake:

But i got me some rear springs now for a future rears up front lift on a junker truck.  I'll be keeping the 3rd though to put in the front axle, and selling the one that is in the front right now.

Ah yes... I don't know why but that's a beautiful site to me, maybe because it's the site of progress :dunno:

A little side to side comparison of the new Vs old

Fearofrunner

V6 painted up and waiting for install, the paint i use was Krylon Rust Tough primer and Rust-Oleum Hammered Gray, good stuff kinda expensive but will hold up well.

Also as a side note i used Locktite brand rust converter on the drums and third member,  this stuff changes rust to a hard black surface that is easily painted over and gives me a reassurance that it wont rust through again.  Kinda like POR (paint over rust) but in a spray can and cheaper. There are other brands that work just as well that i have used with the same results.

That's it for now i'm going out to work on it i'll post more pics later tonight.

Volcom

You're making some progress!  I love that Hammered Grey paint, that will look killer under your truck.

Good luck with Aussie making that V-6 locker.  They have been saying they are coming out with one for quite awhile.  Hopefully they will get one out in time for your buildup.  My 4cylinder aussies were nice!  I haven't tested them yet but they should rock!

I'm kinda on hold with hanging the rear axle until i get the rear shackle hangers from  :turtle: so i decided to do a little wire brushing to get some of the rust off

after rust converter

then got the gas tank dropped so i can get all that cleaned up and reinforce the skid plate

My buddie Pete (not a toy) asked if toyota made the gas tank look like a mini 4Runner on purpose  :rofl2:

Fearofrunner

here is NAT wiring up his lights he's a bad ass :usa:

Also got my 5.29's back, thanks carl

Ordered up my  :turtle: bumper, diff covers, and front axle truss so those should be showing up soon, dropped the other set of gears off over to carl and i'm getting my 35's toomorrow.  Good year went on strike a little while ago four like 4 months and in that time no tires where produced so the 35/12.50s are back ordered nation wide.  so i went to the next best thing and got 5 BFG MT 35/12.50/15 and will have them toomorrow  :eyebrow:

Nice comparison on the stock tires.  I keep forgetting how small the OEM tires and wheels originally were  :ha_ha: :haha: :hahaha: :joke: :talkingn:

I like the white lettering it's just gonna be hard to keep white  :gap:

Fearofrunner

I got board last night and decided to see what they're gonna look like, I'm sure it's gonna have more clearance above the tire but that's as far as i could lift it with the jack.

I got most of all the old undercoating scraped off the bottom side of the cab, that sucked but it needed to be done, that old coating was holding in alot of moister and was starting to rust the bottom of the cab out.

hopefully the shackle hangers came in today and i can get started on hanging the rear springs and get the axle and gears under there this weekend.

Got a package Friday  :cheese:

After some grinding, painting and more grinding got the diff cover in place to weld on

the little Lincoln 100, i got some argon the other day for it  :smack: it doesn't have enough power to burn into 1/8" plate. So took the gas back and just welded with the self shielding wire.

Not my best work that's for sure but after two passes the welds turned out descent,

Fearofrunner

I was really surprised to see how soft the steel was on this diff cover, the grinder took it off like butter. Here it's all welded up.

Painted

:suprised:

Got the old receiver cut off, don't you just love when you pay people to do job and the half ass the  :pokinit: out of it :idiot:

the guy we had put this receiver on cut the one side to be bolted on and then welded the other side to the frame and didn't reinforce his welds at all.  Oh well it's off now. I just gotta weld a plate over this  :gap: hole.
