yeah and it's hard keeping it that way with a leaking rear seal and transmission, and if i don't keep it clean the old man will rip me a new one  :shudder:

Fearofrunner

The  :turtle: bumper just got delivered to the house, i'm hopping it's going to bolt up, if the mounting brackets bolt on the outside of the frame i'm screwed cause there is a body mount on bothsides  :sheerterror:, guess i'll just have to see when i get home.  Pics will be up later

Yeah I was going to ask how you get anything done with that clean garage and drive way.  I could not work there.  I am just to messy  :_oops:

Just marlins 5", it's hard to think that those are going to flex at all :ack: i hope they do :outtahere:

Fearofrunner

got the bumper and shackle hangers yesterday :eyebrow:

But got a problem

then i got an  I'll just cut the body mount and slide the bumper into the gap bolt it up to the original bumper mount weld the body mounts supports to the bumper and it'll be even more secure than what was intended.

Ah ha i out smarted you marlin :D

WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!! :slap:

Fearofrunner

I wondered why  :turtle: only sold 85 and up 4runner bumpers  :dunno: ,now i can see why :cheese:

Besides the body mount being in the way the frame must not set as low as the 85's because when i tried pushing the bumper up to the original bolt holes it wouldn't even come close to any of the holes  :headscratch: then i noticed this

the brackets are hitting the bottom of the tail gate  :shake_head:

and now i have have this much bracket showing with nothing to bolt it to

it's setting about where it needs to with a little bit of clearance

Now I'm puzzled on what to do, i know i can make it work but it's going to take some doing.  another problem that i can see is that if i drill new holes and bolt it the way it is

1) it's not going to be as Strong as if it had full backing to support the mounts
2) the shackle hangers wont have enough room for both a shackle plate and a nut on the bolt

My next plan is to add some plate to the bottom side of the frame to make up the difference for where the bumper mounts are hanging below the frame and this will then give a mounting point for the shackle hangers and give me more room to bolt the shackles on.

But this could be a problem considering that i will have to add about and inch of steel to the frame which will lower my shackle hanger an inch lower possibly giving the rear of the truck another inch of lift which i really don't want.

So now i really need your guys opinion on what to do, any ideas are going to help me so please post up!!!

It's really not that big of a deal but i would like to keep the bumper if i can considering it's already here and it's so well made that i don't think i could make a better quality bumper myself.  any ideas are greatly appreciated

here is a pic of my old runner I just built my rear bumper but the m.c. looks way stronger and nicer. good luck and great build

twistedtoy92

I dunno.............maybe weld square tubing to the frame where needed to bolt it up, then if it is in the way of the shackle mount, weld the mount to the new section of "frame" that you added, just a little more lift, but it might look quite nice..... but i havent messed with many 4runners, i've got 3 pickups and a 89 chassis for my future "buggy" !!!!!!  let me know if my idea makes any sense to you or if my idea is just no good.........

Like twistedtoy said, you could weld some 2x2 square tubing under the frame and line it up with the side of the frame.  Drill holes through the 2x2 and mount the  :turtle: bumper to that.  Then weld the shackle hanger to the 2x2.  It might make your rear lift more but you could always reduce the length of the shackle later if it was a problem.

I never knew there was a difference between body mounts on 84 to 85-89 4Runners.  I will have to keep that in mind since mine is an 84.

hey twistedtoy92 and Volcom thanks for the idea's guys, here's the plan on what going to happen

Instead of using 2x2 i'm going with 2x1x12x1/8 wall square tubbing.  I'll have to drill three new holes in the bumper two for the bottom tubbing and one in the ass end of the frame, with three grade 8 bolts i'll be pretty confident that i can tow smaller trailers and be able to use the high lift on the bumper to lift the truck up if needed.  I just went and bought the tubbing on my lunch break and i'll be working on it later tonight when i get off from school.  But thanks guys for the opinions it's going to work this time.  :usa: :beerchug:

Me and "NotAToy" got alot done this weekend, only have one pic and it's a crappy cell phone fuzzy but it will do until i can buy a digital today.  My dad took his with him to Egypt and wont be back for a couple of weeks.

Anyways, here it is.

Me and NAT couldn't get over how big this turned out  :suprised:.  Just to kinda give an idea of how tall it is, NAT is like 6'5"- 6'6" and the top of the shell was about 4 inches over his head  i'm going to have to jump to get in the front seat. :disturbed:  I like it alot though infact i think i'm in  hahaha more pics later.

before pic= clean garage                                                                                                                                 after pic= dirty garage                                                                                                                                    just kidding, your build looks awesome.

Fearofrunner

haha yeah it's a mess in there now... thanks man  :beerchug:

Fearofrunner

More updates, decided that i would check out the clearance from fender to tire before i went and welded all the hangers to the runner, man am i glad i did.

Looked good from this side

but this was not going to work.

It had three and a half inches in front of the tire, and only one inch in the back... so i cut the front hangers off and moved them up and 1 1/2" to center the tire better (thanks shoyrtt )  The distance now is 7 1/2 inches forward of the stock hanger.

Better

By moving the front spring hanger forward an inch i was worried about the shackle angel (it was about vertical with the weight of the truck on the springs) so i started adding weight to the truck to reach that desiered 300 lbs of settling squish.

yeah that's 3 35's 2 235's with rims, a 5 gallon bucket of sand and a 20 lbs anvil

i'm pretty happy with the shackle angle  :dunno:

In order to move the hanger forward any more i would have to add onto the 2"x1" cause that's as far forward as they are going without it.

Fearofrunner

Then i spot welded the spring perches onto the axle and took the springs and axle housing back off and welded the perches solid.

Just for some tech...

The stock perches are 3 inches from the inside of the axle flange.  (this is on the smaller solid axle for 85 and older)

meaning that if the 86 and new axle is 3" wider, then you add 1 1/2" to each side of the same measuring points and vwalla you have the same mounting points as before but with the wider axle.

  :blah:

Not A Toy

huh.... well i followed a link to a build up that jeeps fear? must have been a inside joke.. all i see is a truck thats being built up by a diehard toy fan and a non biased jeep owner (sometimes i help haha) anyways it looks good with 5000 pounds on the tailgate maybe you could get cathy to ride around on there for a bit.. no screw that you dont wanna reverse them leafs.. because then youd need to rent a "spring condensor" DANIEL TAYLOR
