4runner bob is it worth it?
« on: Nov 21, 2006, 06:05:02 PM »
I am thinking about bobbing my 4runner this weekend. I want to know if it's worth it.   I am thinking about cutting it 10 inches. It will still leave me with a fair amount of space behind the seat. I think the loss of overhang will be worth it. Is there anything I should watch for? I know about the tailgate issuses.   I just am worried I might regret it.........What to do!! :dunno:
`87 runner....it was stock....now sas'd, 37's, duals, geared/ locked, 10in bob, half doors, rock lights. etc., etc.,.........coming soon a 3.4 swap!!!

I have been trying to convince my buddy to bob his runner, but he just wont do it. I think that bobing a runner is well worth the effort, although I can't speak from experience.

Depends on what you are going to do with the rig.  If you wheel at the Hammers, I think it would be worth it.  You can get away without doing it on the Rubicon.  Do you do a lot of rocks?

I am going to do alot of rocks, so I am going to bob mine. Even if you do bob it and you end up not liking it, it will still help. Not sure that helps you.

I have seen people that have cut their tops to fit after they bobbed their 4Runners.  Maybe somebody could post up on they have done it.

i wont bob mine
the whole reason i got rid of my P/U was for the inside space.
my bumper is only 2"below the body and it raps around to the tires,i could drag it for years and still wont hurt anything

I bobbed mine and it has been well worth it, I also cut 10" out of it and that amount was perfect in my eyes. 10" is enough to make a big difference, before I bobbed mine I would drag my bumper everywhere. I also cut and spliced my fiberglass top so my runner is still fully functional. I would do it if I were you. Plus it looks sweet and all of the toyota guys will give you the thumbs up as you go by.

Its pretty easy to bob. If you want to keep your existing tailgate without cutting ugly holes in it, there is some frame work you need to do. Just check out my build, it takes you thru the whole process. I cut 11" off mine and I love it. As for the top, I actually have two, one for the summer, and one for the winter. Im sure you wont regret it.

I love your rig too!!! :beerchug:     I looked at your thread before. You truck is part of the reason I want to do it.  I was hoping to do it this weekend but I have to help out my Dad....... Oh well. It gives me time to finish the half doors. I think I will do the rear fenders and then do the bob job.  How's the smog police liking the 4.3?

Hey TV,  I looked at your thread again. What did you do about a rear body mount? Any pics?  I have a run next weekend. I may get the body done but not the frame. Every thread I read about bobbing these things never show a body mount :dunno: .   That's the only stumbling block I can see right now.

I relocated my body mount on the same side of the frame rail just slid it up a bit and then I had to cut new holes in the back of the floor for the body mount bolt. Then plugged the holes with the original plastic plug. I reused all of the original hardware, Just relocated it.

I took 13" out of mine  :eyebrow: and i would do it again. i took the glass out and made a flap that zips on the sides and Velcro on the bottom. I also cut the bottom of the tail gate off and caped it and the little back part of the fender that was still there. i will post up some pic tomorrow. I say do it you will still have plenty of room. I can fit 450 lbs of camping gear behind the back seat, thats a lot of crap. good luck

I saw this thread and I thought about adding my two cents.  My buddy bobbed his 13" and it came out great.  Everything still works.  Tell me what you think.  Happy trails and Cheers.

To post a pic, click on the "Additional Options..." link (toward the bottom), then click on the "browse" button... then find the pic you want to upload, highlight it, click "open." To add another, click "more attachments" and repeat steps. If the pic is already posted elsewhere on the net, you can click the picture icon at the top above the smileys (toward the left on the second row) and add the link where the picture can be found between the "[img] [img]" that comes up. You may have to resize photos if they're too big. Hope this helps! And  :welcome:

Maybe I AM blind.  When I click reply, the only thing I see under the "Additional Options" is boxes to check.  The boxes are labeled "notify me of replies", "Return to this topic" and "Don't use smileys"     Am I just clicking the wrong area??  Thanks for the welcome message.
