Where are ya at?  Put it this way if I knew where they were Id buy it just to have a spare.  About the only way to truly tell is to pull it apart but that probobly isnt an option here.  Id drain the oil and lood for shiny bits of metal, once drained Id run it through the gears and check for slop, noises etc.  Im sure Marlin will chime in on this one and tell ya WAY better than I ever could but thatll get ya started.

There is no sure way short of driving or tearing the trans completely apart and checking all the bearings, syncrows, gears, and shafts.

When I am asked to inspect a trans, I first remove the nosecone, and check the webbing for metal deposits, and using a maglight, carefully inspect the front bearing races for pitting and wear. Removing the 11 bolt top cover to inspect for wear is also a good idea, but can be tricky to reinstall.

The L52 trans, like all 81-83 L45, 50, and 52, transmissions, have had a poor service record. Since these trans are 20 plus years old, I have had a hard time finding a good used trans.

Good luck on your transmission hunting :grinhat:
