Jedrattle's Runner: the rebuild
« on: Nov 22, 2007, 09:33:22 AM »
I have had this rig for about a year and half. It has gone through a major change in that time. I posted a build thread on Pirate when I started it.....http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=486805

I am starting on another complete rebuild. The truck wheeled great. I just wasn't happy with it. Before the toyota I had a big dodge that I wheeled for years.

RIP

Wheeling the toyota has been fun. The dual cases are amazing! But I could not stand the lack of compression travel in the front suspension and lack of power, compared to what I was used to.  I don't just do rock crawling only. I love to run the washes, dirt road, etc., at a good amount of speed. So a change is needed to get the rig to where I am happy with it overall. I have been saving and selling and swapping parts.

 So this is the plan...
  • 3.4 V6 swap with ORS full swap kit
  • R150 trans
  • rotated cases with 23spline upgrades
  • flat belly
  • Diamond housing with ARB 4.88 hi pinion front
  • Taco rearend with E locker and 4.88s
  • custom trans crossmember
  • 3 link front suspension with coilovers
  • 3 link rear with coilovers
  • on board air system
  • paint
  • exo
  • and a bunch of little stuff I can't think of right now

On the hopeful list is
  • new seats
  • air bump stops
  • new wheels with bead locks

depends on the $$ situation, which I am out of!!  :talkingn:

I have been down for almost 3months (yes it has sucked). First with a busted up hand and the waiting for the  parts to get started. The major stuff I need to get going on the rebuild, is here now (finally!).  This is how the truck sits now (well actually on stands).

First will be the V6 swap. Will post pics as I go.

Thanks! It's been a crap load of work to this point! :talkingn:

I never did post my winch mount

Sticks out 3 1/4in from the grill........nice and tight!!!

I put a piece of plate on the frame and welded it. Then a tube and welded it to the plate. I cut out the core support and welded the winch plate to the frame and tube.

I don't have a pic of it , but I put a piece of square tube between the plate and the round tube.  I welded the square tube to everything it touched!  I drilled a hole and put a shackle in it.  You can see the shackle hanging down in the pics above.

I got the factory A arm mounts cut off and ground down. I put the 3.4 on the stand. I have some work to do to it. Change oil pan, pick up tube, dip stick, etc., etc.  I got the garage cleaned up, so I can do some work on the bench. I am going to get the trans and cases together over the next few nights. I thought I was going to have a problem with the V6 adapter plate. I read over on pirate that it rotates the cases the wrong direction. While, it's the one for the 3.4 trans that does that not the 3.0.   I have to drill out the the adapter so I can rotate the cases 10 degrees. I picked up a drill bit on the way home today. Soo I am off to the garage!!  :burnout:

I spent yesterday building the cases

R150 with Marlin's gear driven case adapter

Building the first case..........all nice and clean!  That's very unusual for me!!!

V6 adapter, first case, and dual adapter....done!!

 Bolted up to the trans

Put on the rear case and bell housing.   8)    This setup is almost 4ft long!! :o

The rear case has 4.7's in it (already had it). I upgraded to 23 spline inputs. I ended up with both cases rotated 10 degrees  8)

Next is motor mounts.
