Well my hydro assist boxes came in today. I opened the boxes to see the new ram, pump, reservoir, cooler, brackets, belt, hoses etc. :blah: I normally would be anxious to get started, but after doing a little more research on Volcom's thread, I'm not so sure. :_oops: Things should slow down in the office to get started soon. :crossed:

Nice!  You'll love actually being able to turn your tires!  The one-handed steering in everything except the big rocks is very nice.  Remember to use syn. power steering fluid with that pump.  I'm using Valvoline Syn power fluid with my stock pump and box.  No leaks yet.

Thanks for the advise. :) I'm not stessing about the install, only second guessing my purchase a bit.  :ack: I'm sure it will work out in the end.

I does OK on the street, but I wouldn't consider it a daily driver. Fifth gear is now unusable and any decent sized grade it struggles. Around town and 0 to 55 mph isn't bad. :driving:

Thats mine on 38s too haha.

I had a chance this past week to wheel it with the hydro. very very nice. awesome in the rocks!

oh and fyi the psc recommends NON synthetic power steering fluid ONLY. no atf, no mercon etc. I dont know what TG recommends for their pump.

Rockyot:
Any pics from your trip? :snapshot: What have you done to beef up your knuckle studs etc with your steering set up?  :_order: I picked up a set of the ARP studs and Longfield's 5th stud kit (basically a small tab and a grade 8 bolt) to install at the time I do the hydro. I broke the stock studs with my 35s once. I can't imagine trying to drag my rig off the trail with 39s and broken steering. :shudder:

BTW: TG recommends Valvoline synthetic.

nothing as of yet for steering mods. I was kinda unsure of time of building if it was really worth the money to get the arp studs etc. With talking with my friends that run toy axles(mostly sami/buggy rigs) the overall vote was no. however with a little heaver rig and bigger tires I might be pushing the limit. I drive smart(ie not a throttle junkie) so Im a little easier on the drivetrain than most. I do however run 30spline longs. also with the hydro its not talking as much effort to crank the wheel, the natural stabilizer affect from the ram is nice too, keeps from those thumb ripping steering wheel spins.

trip pics are here.

Hydro assist is a piece of cake. I did mine before there where any off the shelf parts 5 years ago. Ive never driven with out hydro asst. I'm use the T-G pump for my full hydro now. I use GM factory synthetic power steering fluid. When I blew my ram out last year at the Hammers I ran brake fluid, 90 weight and 10-40 through it to get it back to camp. That pump obviously got fried from all of the cavitation.

Ok back to some serious business. :phone:

The next item to purchase for the Runner is a better communication devise. I have been using my piece of crap handheld CB for the past 4 years without many positive experiences. Poor range, hard to hear, etc. etc. etc. :_oops:

I would like to purchase a HAM radio (most of the Benders had them in my last visit to the Hammers). It looks like from my research (not much) for every watt the Radio puts out, the transmission and reception range is about one mile (depending on terrain). I have found several sites that cater to the off road industry, with complete in car setups. I have also found a few "Ham Radio" specific sites that sell the same or better radios for half the price. :psss:

The question to the Marlin :turtle: crowd is have you used a Ham Radio? What do I "need" to have? Where did you buy? I have heard that I will need a license?

Thanks for the help.
