Last weekend was the last time out for the season. Now I am gonna dig in and do the rear suspension and a few other things. I smashed the driver door and window glass. Now both sides match. I blew a bead in a small creek and snapped my winch cable trying to winch myself out. I would have thought the cable would have lasted longer than the second pull before snapping  :tantrum: I guess the little M8000 needs 3/8" cable now.

I started mounting the rear AP buggy springs with Marlin weld on spring hangers. I mounted the hangers forward 5" as instructed from the guys at All Pro and retained the factory rear shackle mount. I figured they should have only been mounted 4" forward since the springs are only 54" long not 56" which is also mounted 5" forward on 3rd gen trucks. The guys assured me 5" was correct so I assumed the center pin must be in a different place which would account for the extra inch.

After getting everything mocked up and set back down on the ground with the hangers 5" forward my shackle is completely vertical and maybe even slighty forward. The wheel seems to be centered a little forward in the wheel well but given the fact that the axle travels back at the spring flexs that may not be bad and as the springs settle I think it should push the axle back a little.

What do you guys think I should do? Weld in the hanger back a bit or move the rear shackle mount forward? I have johnny joints to weld on yet so I can play with the angle then.

It looks good as in don't change anything or leave the front hanger there and deal with back?

I am from Mankato.

All Pro recommends putting 300lbs of weight on new springs to simulate the settled spring ride height. I tried to get ahold of a buddy of mine to see if he could sit on the tailgate but he didn't answer. So I got a little carried away instead. I estimate there is at least 650 lbs in there now. Here is the list:
4-36" Iroks
1-38" TSL
1-15x10 steel wheel
1 Jack Stand
1 decent sized Propane tank
1 Half consumed case of coors
1 Large piece of misc. steel
4 Leaf springs at about 60lbs. each
1 set of uninstalled rock sliders
4 30' steel chains and 2 chain binders
1 optima yellow top battery

Damn there is gotta be more weight than that in there. It is squatting pretty darn good. The shackle angle now has a slight rearward angle to it. I sure hope the springs don't settle this much but even if they do it is not quite enough angle for my liking given the fact that these springs have very little up travel. They are flat now so I don't think the angle is gonna improve beyond this.

I am thinking of just moving the rear shackle mount forward. It is really gonna suck taking all that crap back out now :shake:

Red wing is a cool town.

I have decided to weld on the johnny joints a bit forward. Are there any tricks to putting the joints themselves together? I have heard they are a real pain since they must be on the truck to assemble them.

Thats not as bad as this. This could have been real bad if he tried to bomb it and make it through. I have heard that hole will swallow trucks with 44s  :haha:

i'd move the shackle mount forward,  :yesnod:  at least  1 inch maybe 2,   they should be at a 45* angle with that weight in there

I am gonna have to build some massive shackles to level the truck out with the new 5" front springs. The springs should be here real soon. Will Marlin or anybody make custom length shackle plates?

I was working on the truck when I noticed a strange odor. I got out from underneath the truck to find smoke coming out of my air compressor. I turned off the motor only to be greeted by a spray of brown sludge out of the relief valve all over me  After tearing down the pump I found the head gasket had blown out. The compressor is a Sears Craftsman Professional stand up unit that is 15 months old. Conveniently out of warranty by 3 months :shake: Just great.

I figured out the parts I need so after going to Sears to order them I am told that they cannot get me the parts to fix the item I bought in their store because you can only buy parts from Sears Parts and Service which is seperate. The Sears Parts and Service just happened to close down also so I need to call a 1-800 number to order the parts. The headgasket and reed valves probably weigh about as much as two ball point pens but it is gonna cost me 45$ for the parts and 11$ to ship it! The shipping is what makes me mad. Oh and get this, it would have costed me $95 to have a Sears technician to just come and look at the compressor  Buy something else if you are thinking of getting an air compressor or something that could possibly break down.

Does anybody know the proper method for getting the snap ring in Johnny Joints? They are tighter than heck and look like they need to be pressed in but you can't with them on the truck. Advice will be greatly appreciated.

I am gonna try to use a ball joint press. These things are no joke. They suck to install. The mounts are only tacked on now for mock up so I am going to having to disassemble them, weld the hangers, then reassemble them
