u can still get orbit eyes from alcan spring here in grand junction, co
I was quoted 90$ per spring eye to add orbit eyes and I think each spring was around 190$ base price, shackles were 90$ and new wider hangers for the orbit eyes were 60$. Would be a cool setup but pretty damn expensive all said and done.

I got ahold of a ball joint press to install the johnny joints and it worked like a dream. They went in without a hitch in about a half hour for both sides.

Installed 5" front springs and 3" AP rear buggy springs with the Johnny joints. I will have to make longer shackles or get a small lift block for the rear. I have been contemplating removing a spring from the 5" pack to lower it down to the level of the rear. I have a few things to finish before I flex it out.

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike

I wish I had a different hood that could be painted ::) Amazingly I think the rocker panels are straight too.

Would I be a fool if I attempted to bob this box? I have a spare tailgate that still opens that would go in.

id bob it, it might be difficult with all the wrinkles, but it would be cool

Go ahead and bob that thing, as useless as it may seem. You won't regret loosing all that sheetmetal. Once you start cutting the body away you will have a hard time stopping till there is little more than a floorpan left.  :twocents:

I think I am gonna try and start on the bob job tomorrow. I am gonna whip up some half doors too since there is no longer any glass or functioning door handles.

I have been seriously considering cutting the roof off and caging the thing but in Minnesota we frequently wheel in the rain and in mud. I hate the idea of being the guy wearing goggles 100% covered in mud.

You ain't kidding! The february Wisconsin run would be awful chilly. It was 65 degrees today though.

I got some work done today on the bed bob. It really was pretty easy and would only take a couple hours. I just have to finish tack welding and then slather on some sort of filler.

The 4 1/2" angle grinder with a cutting wheel really is the way to do it. Cutting is fast and it is easy to get a straight line. Expect to use 3 or 4 wheels depending on how good of wheels you have. I cleaned everything up with a wire wheel fitted to my grinder now all that is left is to finish tacking it on. It is tacked on but I didn't take any pictures since it was dark already.

The bed bob project kinda stalled out due to about 6 inches of snow when the truck was parked outside. Once the snow melts inside the box and I can grind the rust off all the exposed metal I will be able to finish welding the inside.

I really don't know how much effort I want to put into the finishwork on the box since the rest of it is already trashed. Any Ideas? Should I mud it up and paint it nice or just finish grinding the welds down decent then spray some paint that sorta matches and leave it?

This is how it sits now with the welds roughly ground down.

Thanks. That is what I have been leaning towards.

It was a major PITA to get everything to match up straight and decent since the boxside was smashed and dented all over then 10 inches back the boxside would have a different contour. Oh well it is good enough for this thing.

I forgot to post a pic of my diff armor welded on. I sprayed it with Rustoleum hammered gray paint. I love that stuff.

I should have but I was lazy and filled the gap with the welder. It wasn't too bad I just moved it around until I found a spot that had the least gap on the sides then burned it on. It wasn't as bad as my axle truss as far as fitment goes. But my axle was bashed in a little way so I think that allowed it to tuck up farther.

I also heard the holes for the drain plugs dont line up as well. :dunno:  who manufactured the truss? just curious.....

It sure seems to be fine as far as the plug goes. I didn't really see any problem when I did the install. I just positioned it so it was decent. I am happy with the piece.

My truss was a Marlin unit. I had to grind a lot and spread it out to get it to sit where I wanted it. But it wasn't a big deal. With fabricated parts like these I always expect to do a little modification, but it sucks to have to grind something you just expected to weld on.

In anticipation for wheeling on new years I finally got around to working on this thing again. I made rear shackles that are 9" long and got those installed. I have Sky boomerang front shackles and front axle relocation plates that I am hopefully gonna get installed soon. A new Masterpull winch line is in the mail and I mounted my new Ultimate Air Multiforce 15lb. CO2 tank in the bed. I reinforced the frame in the rear where I cut it down and added tow points. My custom weld on beadlocks and rims should arrive any day now. Then the last thing is to build a rear tube bumper.

I will post progress pics soon.
