So, I took an alternator I had lying around in to town, was able to have it thoroughly tested, found out its putting out 116 amps at 5000 rpm, kicking on at 1400 rpm of alt, which is about 700 rpm on the tachometer, problem was this alternator was a Honda nippondenso with Toyota voltage regulator installed to give correct plug, problem is Honda is reverse rotation compared to Toyota, which meant is was not letting air pass thru it properly, so I torn into a stock alternator and the hi output so, upon further inspection, the stock rotor, has a groove where brushes ride, called alternator test place, 40 bucks to replace bearing and glue new copper, where brushes ride, so for 40 bucks, I should be good to go

So, while I was waiting for rotor to be fixed I decided to pull existing alt out, notice insulator on positive stud was melted, only way it can melt is from arc, or not tightened properly, so I used insulator from stock alternator, cleaned all wiring connection points, slapped it back in... And what do know I have 14.6 volts at idle

wait. so nothing was wrong with your alternator? it was just a loose wiring connection?

started out as a loose connection, melted the insulator, which is used to snug the first nut, thus causing connection to get more loose, my symptom was a jumping volts on the volt gauges, I thought my internal voltage regulator was out, tomorrow my rotor should be done, ill have a 100+ amp spare alternator for the trail parts

glad it was something simple.. and heck, now you have a spare

I was looking at your posting history to try and find a write-up on your digital voltage gauges, but I figured you might be able to find a link for that much quicker...
My questions are: Are they for a dual battery setup, and what kind of isolator or switch do you have them wired up to?

yes, they are for dual batteries. I'm running a odyssey pc1200 fmj, and a pc1200 lfmj, for the battery selector, I'm running a painless 500 amp power manager, its a little older and not the new digital design, the two volt meters gauges where purchased off of ebay
