Looks good! Glad to see others seeing the potential of the fj60/62 axle. I have parts to build one here shortly for my next family crawler. Can't wait to hear how the spartan works for you in the 9.5" I have one as well as a Detroit for my build.

They have potential. A little weird to work with as they have some unique issues, like the driver side/perch and it being spring under. But yeah i'm excited!

Dingman.

Very nice.  Can't wait to see the axles under the truck!

Just ordered the RCV axles or "The last axle I will ever need" according to the website. Got free inner hubs!

So while I wait on parts and what not I have a possible fun project. Cost, $35 from ebay. The 22re is megasquirted.

So i decided to bolt this on.

Bosch 0280140551. A PWM IAC valve out of a VW. This will give my 22re active idle control. So under load it will up the idle, give better cold start high idle, better power steering/AC high idle and when in low low, simply let off the clutch put load on the motor, while idleing and it will bump the idle up to 1500 RPM. Sweet.

Started by drilling a hole into the MS housing.

Then soldered everything together. This can be done through the factory harness. But my harness doesn't have A/C, so the wires aren't present. So I am adding it as an extra.

If you see it, its for sale.

84_yota_4wd

Well that's cool. wish I could run megasqurit here in ca

So i got everything installed. Tapped a 1/2 NPT hole in and

Installed the fittings.

Installed and wired it in, only to find! Due to other intake mods, such as no AFM and what not, I can't get the idle low enough for this to work. It just makes my idle to high. This is due to the thorrtle body allowing to much air around the plate. I filled the plate and adjusted it, but still no luck. I think this is a great idea, and it tried to work, but no.

Pulled the 9.5 apart today and started cleaning it. I will tell you this thing is HUGE. It doesn't help it has 1/4 inch of crapp all over it.

Bolted my diff jig down.

Made a pinion nut flange holder

MARK YOUR CAPS!

All apart.

Drive the races out. Everything looked ok. SOme wear but still in good shape.

Gear off. I like the 9.5 nut/bolt method vs 8" bolt only method.

Pulled the carrier bearings off. I'm not sure I could get them off without destroying the bearing.

Pulled the pin and spider gears. Its getting a SPARTON

If you see it, its for sale.

After several minutes of the O-face. I was able to take the pic.

Sandblasted and painted all the axle parts

I blasted and painted the hub. I found one of the hubs has damage and is unusable. I will have to do one of my IFS hubs,

looking great!

Why not do ifs hubs both sides then and utilize the flat dial

It was always my understanding the ifs and sa hubs were the same other then the inner hub gear?

That axle is absolutely beautiful!  The housing and 9.5'' ring gear must really take the weak link out of the toy axle.

Zippo, you really seem to be a jack of all trades. Engines, transmissions, differentials. If you don't mind me asking how did you come to acquire all those sweet skills?

I have no idea!!!! No. My father is a master electrician/auto mechanic my uncle was a machinist/automotive aluminum parts developer/tester for reynolds metals, my grandfather was a watch smith. And I am finishing up my BS in eletrical engineering.(I didn't start college till I was 28) I have just always been around it and excited to learn and do. Growing up, I got tools for x-mas starting at age 9? - 10? I have worked for mechanics in the past, built several homes for family and friends. I do a LOT of research and take my time. Learn when ever I can from whom ever I can... And screw up a lot. Thats how I learn.

Also most things are all the same. Well they work on the same principles, at the level I work on them atleast. So with a basic understanding and the ability to apply that understanding to different things, makes most things learnable and dooable. That and be willing to screw everything up and ask dumb questions.

Well other then spelling. I am a terrible speller.

That axle is beautiful man!  Your welds look great!

So I got some parts and some work done.

First I replaced the 28 year old Power steering Idle air control valve. This is for a 3vz, as I couldn't find a cheap one for the 22re. Seemd to work.

Nitro 9.5" 4.88 Gears, install kit and solid spacer.

First I put the spartan in.

Gear on!

80ft lbs!!! and some locktight red.

Having a stand makes things much easier. This gear set moved the shims, off the pinion and under the pinion race. I like this a lot more!

First go at it with factory spacing. .053" patten to shallow. Needs more shims! But close.

Second patter at .055" Looking better.

Last on at .058 I'lle take it.

Drive:

Coast:

Got the solid pinion spacer in with a .012 shim and 120 ft lbs.

All that is left is a final cleaning, seal install and thats done. Also got FROR ARP Steering and hub studs.

Man I can't wait to take my truck to you. Its going to be like taking it to the Diff spa.

zippo

So I added a few more shims taking me to .0605" Backlash is .006"-.008" depending on where you take it. 130' lbs on the pinion nut, 14-16" lbs of pinion preload and 120' lbs on the carrier bearings.

Drive:

Coast:

Installed! Notice the bolt. That is the result of me brining the perches to 29". This allows me to use stock SAS kits. Another option would be a custom front spring hanger.

Just curious, I'm a toal newb with gears. Where do you add the shims?/What tool do you use to measure the spacing?

Check this out and do a bit of reading. Setting up gears is not as difficult as most think. Just use the right tools and patience. http://www.gearinstalls.com/  :beerchug:

It depends. A lot of toyota have the shims under the pinion bearing. This kit moved the shims to under the pinion bearing race. Which makes it easier.
