I had the exact same noise/problem. After I replaced my rear t-case and the noise didn't go away I talking with Marlin, he explained that I needed a CV in the rear with the pinion pointed up at the t-case output. I did what he said and the noise went away.

With a standard driveshaft I thought the t-case flange and the 3rd flange should be parallel so that the two ends are operating at the same angles.

correct

QuoteWith a CV driveshaft I thought the 3rd flange should point directly at the t-case flange so that the standard joint on the 3rd end has no angle in it.
almost got it

With a CV at the transfer, the angle at the diff should be 1/2 to < 1 degree.     You want a small amount of movement so needle bearings have some movement and stay lubed.

Quote
Sounds like you have the CV alignment with a standard driveshaft?  I must be missing something because I would expect major vibration.

that's what the picture looks like to me

The splines on my 86 are on the transfer case side.

On the phone what you discribed did not sound like a driveshaft. But that being said a cv is almost always a must when driven on the road. Heres how mine is set up. Hahaha not even a few months old and its already a barber pole!

So I got a bunch done today.

First was making bump stop brackets, out of some 1/4 inch plate.

Welded em in.

My rear output had some dripping issued due to some bad pitting on the CV flange. So I swapped in a tripll drilled and a new seal.

Threw in my new Tom Woods front shaft.

I need to add some 4 degree shim to the front. I have 10 degrees of positive caster, want to get it down to 6. Will also help the front shaft angle.

Got some other small things finished up. Still need to find a 3vz fan shround and get some wiring cleaned up.

If I find the bump stop doesn't break in and give me another inch or so of uptravel, I will take the saw to it.

Threw in my new Tom Woods front shaft.

I'm assuming that it's has the long travel splines, but how much extension does it have left?  My first thought was you may be at risk for disconnecting it at full suspension droop because the front axle drops down and forward for maximum travel.

I made the measurements the guy at tome woods asked for and this is what they sent me. It doesn't compress or extend all that much. The pic is also a little decieving.

That said, I need to get her offroad to check everything

Woods shafts have a 12 inch slider. Way more than enough for your rig. Atleast that's what my front long slip from them has. I want there bamf cv for my rear.

Correction...mine has 10 inch splines. Nice rig btw.

That springs looks pretty flat in that pic bud. You don't ever want a spring to go past negative. If its flat at full compression id leave the bump strops alone.

"Roger", what 84_yota said. I went wheelin' with my new springs without new bump stops. Now I need new springs again. Feelin' like a dumba$$ and a lot lighter in the wallet. All 'cause I had to go wheelin' like right now. :hammer:

Agree. I won't be trimming them. I did bolt on some 35 BFG km2's! All thats left is a rear bumper and winch!

They are cast aluminum with a mate finish. Not sure if they are painted or coated. The do look good. I really wanted to keep my steelies, but they just wont fit without a wheel spacer.
