529 Install
« on: Dec 29, 2010, 12:22:57 PM »
I am wondering if you guys would recommend trying to setup my 529'e myself I am not a mechanic but do all the work on my yota myself with good results thus far. I have read so many forums on installing gears in yota 3rd's and it seems easy enough but it also seems that there is no room for error. Is setting the backlash an easy or pain in the ass job. How many hours per 3rd is the average to do this job with the 3rds on the bench ready to go? If I was to pay someone to do this for me what do you guys feel is a fair price to pay per 3rd to have this done? Thanks in advance for your comments...

Do you have a press? Backlash is easy, pinion depth is a pain.

Best advice, read ZUK's site:   http://www.gearinstalls.com.  He even has a page dedicated to showing off the tools required/useful, http://www.gearinstalls.com/gearinstalltools.htm

Also, look for his 'cheatsheet' of common shims to use with certain setups as a starting point.  http://www.gearinstalls.com/cheatsheet.htm

setting pinion depth is CRITICAL  your shim thickness must be within a few thousandth. and backlash also must be very close.   It takes a LOT of time.   figure yourself 3-4 hours for each 3rd.

I set up my first third a few months ago. It wasn't too difficult if you have the right tools and know what your are doing. The more you do it the faster/ easier it gets.

As far as tools go, do you also have a in/lb beam style torque wrench? Those are really important.

I would say go for it. There is plenty of help out there if you need it and you will be able to say you did it yourself.

i have done tons of thirds. I have all the tools i need, including the best of all, a pinion bearing that is wallered out so i dont have to press it on and off to set pinion depth.

even before i had all the "special" tools i set up alot for myself, never had a problem except for some loud gear sets....

a loud gear means its not set up right

true, true, 99% of the time, there are some just plain bad gear sets out there that are loud too... but as i said it was before i had the "needed" tools and just went off tooth pattern and feel....  hell the same gears are still alive in the rear of my runner, loud and all.... and by loud i just mean a slight audible humm at highway speeds....

im not saying to do it yourself if your not sure, but im saying before i knew better, i successfully set up gears that are still on the road, and i spent that extra money elsewhere.....

...well if its a "bad" gear set then you correct and compensate it by setting the correct pinion depth and backlash...then its no longer noisy. Haha.

I've probably set up about 20 8" gear sets over the past few years...  Every once and a while I've had a gear set that just won't come in with a nice quiet pattern.   We usually just put these in the front where they are the least anoying. This seems more common with the cheaper gear sets.  They still last and wear well though.
