Bad motor shake---Now with pics
« on: Mar 23, 2010, 07:34:02 PM »
OK i know the title is weird but my motor seems to shake alot more than it use to or should.  First off it's a 20r motor, unknown milage, the truck is mostly stock with the exception of a 32/36 weber and header.  I blew the head gasket a few months back, so i sent the head to the machine shop to have it cleaned, decked and have a valve job done. I did not remove the timing chain when doing this either, just in case some of you were wondering.  So after getting the truck running again i notice that the motor shakes quite a bit, shakes enough to make the entire truck shake.  now this clears up when you get to about 3000 rpms.  I have driven the truck for about 600 miles, mostly highway.  The truck seems to run fine at speed when i'm at 3000 rpms but when i'm cruinsing 40mph or so it seems to have hiccup every now and then.  I'm trying to figure out what my problem is and wondering if some of you guys out there could chime in.  Since i think the hiccup at lower rpms and the bad shaking are cause by the same problem.  My only guess is that when ii put the timing gear back on i might have got the timing chain off by one tooth or something, so it might not be right at tdc. Would that let the motor run the way it is.  i'm just really confused with this, new plugs, wires have 1200 miles or less , rotor and cap look good, and messing with the distributor doesn't help either.

Sounds like cam and crank are not timed properly

Or the timing it retarted.... Ill bet thats wat it is. If u say it clears up over 3k... That would mean the dis. advances and fixes the problem... maybe im high but try bumpin the timing up a hair.

compression test showed 140 in 1 and 2 and 160 in 3 and 4.  plugs wires are on right and tight, that was one of the first things i doubled checked.  Messing with the distributor does nothing to help the problem.  that why i'm thinking the cam and crank are not timed properly so it runs like crap at low rpm but when the distributor advances when i get up in the rpm it clears up.  i'll take the valve cover off and see if the marks line up, if i see anything odd i'll take some pics and post up and see what you guys think

Maybe the distributor is off one tooth.  Pull it out and put it in a tooth different one way or the other.

I also tried that too, and the motor just ran worse.  I'm going to pull the valve cover friday night put the motor at tdc and see where the marks line up on the cam.  I'll also take some pics of the cam and distributor locations and post them up and see if you guys can spot any issues.

I took some pics of where the cam gear is the location of the rotor and the crank pulley, the mark is on the 0 though you can't see the 0.  Now when looking at the cam gear it looks off to me.  I drew a straght line from mark to mark.  Is it off, should it be more straight up and down or a little more to the right at a angle.  If you need any more pics let me know

Timing Gun??? you'd be suprised at how well a 22r runs even if its 50* off LOL, Also New fuel filter, i have to change mine every couple months cuz you can see silt building up in the bottom, that may be ur hiccup. And check ur valve lash, maybe someone forgot to do 1 or all of em  :cheese:
.07-.11 cold or .08-.12 hot, (supposed to do when hot)
not much else i can think of besides ur wires being mixed up. recheck those
I blame the automatic transmission for the wussification of America

I forgot about this post.  been awhile
Update
Never really got the shake out of the motor, but after messing with the timming it helped some.  The motor went south on me anyways, at 5 am one morning it shut down and all i could see was a ton of oil on the ground.  Once i got it home i noticed that the oil pressure sending unit on the side of the block broke off and let the oil escape from the motor. I found a 82 2wd truck with a 22r with 82,000 orginal miles for a 100 bucks that ran so i yanked the motor and sold the truck to a father and son who wanted to make a drag truck out of it for 250.  The old 20r i now being scrapped, minus the head i kept that for my 20r/22r build
