My friend works at benchmade so I am partial to them :) They are super awesome quality but a little expensive. But you better act fast before they ban auto or fast action blades... Rumor is that a blade you can open with one hand like these may soon be outlawed..  stupid! But if you use your knife as a gasket scraper.. .or screwdriver.. or anything else not necessarily the best for a knife.. then get something cheaper.. I have a little fast action kershaw that I use for everything and it has held up great despite the fact that there are some nicks on the blade :)

jimbo74

i thought auto opening knives were already illegal? or at least to civilians. i think they are fine if you are ems, fire, le, or military

i'm mil though

i will use it for everything... i saw some benchmades online, and they were liek $100, which seems pretty standard as far as knives go

I think it depends on the length of the blade and the state you live in as to if they are illegal or not...

I must have been looking at the more expensive ones.. these are a few I liked..

i had a kershaw it was awsome, the tip broke off just enough that i could use it as a flat head screwdriver. my girlfriends dad just gave me a 10-15 year old buck knife that a love. cant really carry it around though since it has an 8" blade

Kershaw all the way for a knife that is going to get abused. I have 3 1660 st's, they are the best knifes ever... one touch opening, low profile, fairly light considering the only non metal material is the slide saftey, super durable, and they are so slim you dont even notice it when its clipped on your pocket. I also have the 1600 mini and it is awesome... my 1660's were made in 02, 06 and 08 (I loose one, and just after I break down and buy another one I find it) and my 1600 is 02. All of them are still in great shape and hold a great edge. Some of their other knives dont impress me much, but these are the :pokinit:

benchmade's are very good quality, my only problem with mine is that it doesnt stay sharp for very long. got issued a benchmade and a gerber auto-opening, the gerber will stay sharp for longer but will rust alot easier. kershaws are great as well

Jimbo,

I have carried many knives into many places, Falujah, climbing, hunting etc and I think there are many good ones.  I personally only carry Cold Steel knives now http://www.coldsteel.com/  They are every bit as good as Benchmade and any other brand out there without the extreme price.  They may not be as pretty but they will always get the job done and if your life is on the line that's all that matters.  Just a lowly grunts opinion though :D

Ha no.  Maybe when you deploy they will issue you a multi tool, but the only people I have talked to that were issued knives were EOD, TACP. CCT and SERE.

Nihal

I would say the Cold Steel tanto 4" if you want to use it for anything special if not, a good 6" drop point will do almost anything, unless you like a special brand or type of knife.

Don't care for folding knives, and I'll take a Bowie cold steel. I've got a broad blade Bowie that hangs down to my knee.

You would be correct it is a style of knife not a brand of one. Sorry if you misunderstood.

I have a benchmade auto stryker. I love it. Very nice when you only have one free hand. Benchmade is a lifetime warrenty and life sharpening. The main spring broke after 9 years. I dropped it off, got it fixed, new screws and sharpened for free with free shipping back.

I love Gerber and Kershaw.  Since I can be at their headquarters in little over an hour.  And they have factory seconds sales all the time.  But it's been awhile since I've gone.

I own several Gerber multi-pliers, and my favorite is the first gen.  The one without the lock blade features.  (but with the hand pinching features  :yikes: )  I really don't like the new ones that lock.  I can use the first gen easier than the newer ones.
I've owned several really nice Gerber knives, and they hold an edge very well.

The Kershaw that I love best is this one.  The rubber grip makes using it in wet weather very nice.

But my absolute favorite and most used, matter of fact I own at least 6 of them.  I have several in the shop, one in the truck, spares if I loose one and I carry one with me all the time.  Easy to use one handed.

I get catalogs from A. G. Russell.  They have some very nice stuff, very expensive to affordable.

BUDDERS

I have always been partial to Gerber and Buck knives.  My bother got me a Gerber with a gutting hook on the backside about 20 years ago that I used when hunting and it has held up to plenty of abuse and still holds an edge.  My dad has had the same buck knife for 40+ years and a few years back, he broke the tip off (using it to pry on something  :hammer:) and I ran it down to the Buck manufacturing facility for him (used to be real close to my house).  They warranteed the blade even though they didn't make that model anymore!  They made him a new blade off of some old drawings they had and called me a week later to pick it up.  Buck will get my business from now on, In fact I went down and bought 5 knives at there moving sale before they went to Idaho.

Cold steel 4inch tanto... Carried this knife for 13 months in the mountains of Afghanistan and it was a GREAT knife which has now been placed up on the knife shelf and replaced with a CRKT which seems to be holding up great

RUGER

i carry a sog trident tanto in afganastan. only thing i dont like about it is its safety. its been good to me so far. out of the box its super sharp...edge is holding fine. i have a few others i have if this gets lost or stolen...boker, and a mini ka-bar folder. i also have my gerber freehander multitool...i use it dang near every day.

kershaw makes good stuff too. i carried one fer years...i decided to leave it at home(sentimental value).
