I still have to sort out everything but you have first dibs. I'm trying to sort this out in my head of how it's all going to go down... I need one of those drilled flanges and an axle socket if you have a spare or four; this is going to be some kind of fun, I can already tell.

I think it'd be best to pull both axles into the shop and tear everyone apart and rebuild with 5.29/Detroit then sell the other stuff.

I'd like the triple drilled dealie; I was going to drill one out to make my own but I'd probably eff it up somehow. I'm good like that...  :shake_head: If you don't have a spare socket I may have a friend who should have one. I'll bug him tomorrow; otherwise the axles will wait. I'm still fighting the wiring but the battle is nearly over.

I may do the axles this week, have to re-weld the exhaust, an oil change and seal the oil pan tomorrow; it's the only thing leaking! (so far)

Went up Mt Herman today and across to Rampart via 315; all at 10 psi. Aired to 30 at the Sinclair station in Manitou and my death wobble came back with a vengeance... which is how I broke the exhaust off. Luckily it was only a few miles from home so the open header wasn't too terrible to deal with; sure was loud though.  :shhh: I got a video of the truck flexing out; the fenders need a little trimming for sure. Other than that is was an uneventful outing; I want to start earlier next time, we left around 1 and got home around 7-7:30; just in time for FOOOOOOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!! :yumyum:

So I was wondering about my death wobble... could the rear shocks have something to do with it? They're mounted inboard at a 45 degree angle... or could having 30 psi in the tires be the culprit? I'm going to air down to 20 and see what that does, hope it helps.
Also when the hubs are locked (not in 4wd) it's a pain to steer but when unlocked it's fine. I'm guessing this is normal with lockers? I almost ran off the trail a few times because of this... it was kind of scary.

So I pulled down the oil pan and found some plastic bits in it that were once a timing chain guide. Pulled the valve cover and found where those plastic pieces should live. Awesome. I'm torn about fixing this because the engine runs great and I don't want to put much (if any) money into fixing it since I have 3RZ dreams. Other than that... nothing leaks from the engine; there's a bolt on the t-case that leaks, but just a little. And the rear diff leaks from somewhere slowly... very slowly. Not a big deal, the fluid levels are good for now.

And I'll get pics soon; charging the camera battery.

lockers cause u to steer like :pokinit: in the snow its even worse.....

dont fix the engine run it till it dies....

run ur air on road at 25 or less

on the trail if u lock 1 hub u can steer pretty good..... if u come to something hard lock the other hub.... those detroits might as well be spools

i got mine running but damn i got some leaks in that front diff

that is all

The joy of being locked in the front with no way to turn it off :)  Just wait until you are in Moab on the slickroad headed downhill with all the weight of your truck on the front axle you try to turn :D

Hydro assist will cure that.

The joy of being locked in the front with no way to turn it off... :)

I'd love some ARBs but y'know... they cost money and junk. Plus the truck came with Detroits (so I was told) but we shall see what's really inside in a few weeks when I get around to switching axles. The spare I got from Josh is set up for hydro, just need everything else. That's on the "to buy" list along with the 5.29/Detroit rear, it'll get done someday... eventually... maybe...  ::)

If my truck wasn't so tall with 4 point harnesses I'd hop out to lock/unlock the hubs, but even being 6'2" it's a good hop into the cab. And landing on the harness latches sucks a bit. I aired the tires down to 20 to see how that affects the death wobble... hope it goes away.

Today I cleaned the oil pan and valve cover, going to stick them back on tonight. Thought about painting them Chevy Orange "just because"... but I'm not because the engine is only getting maintenance money spent on it. It's running fine so I'm not touching it. Plus it got about 15 mpg last trip even being aired down to 10 psi most of the time.

And here's two videos of my flexing and fender testing:

Good to know; I haven't done the whole "unhook rear shaft, spin engine and count output flange" like boggerrunner said to do. It'll be slower once I get the 5.29s in  :D and I still want a dual case set-up...

This is up Rampart Range (starting at Balanced Rock side) before the shooting range; it's short but as you can see it has some good dips/drops to check flex. There's a little hill that can be climbed; I was worried about failing and not having someone to help out if I got stuck/rolled etc. I munched the fenders some; guess what's getting chopped off next?  :flamer:

I was thinking of wheeling this weekend if you're not going to watch the "BIG GAME"; I'll put off the axle swap until after I go next time.

Thanks, it's only about 300 feet long but it does twist things up pretty good. I was scared when the tires nailed the fenders the first few times; sounded really bad.

Got the oil pan and valve cover on tonight; no leaks so far. I want to wash off the old grunge to keep an eye out for new leaks; if they pop up at all.

Oh really? Instead he makes the 5'6" girl do it, where I almost need a running start to hop back in. hehe

Matt - Let's go on Saturday! You live in an emissions county? yuck, for testing. yay, for the air. I read almost that entire emissions thread, have you checked it out yet? Probably don't have anything to worry about though. I mean, "It was nice"... ;-p

School is today and tomorrow is community service from 9-1 so in the afternoon is best for caging goodness. I still have to stitch the exhaust back together and that's it; I'm ready to wheel again. Hopefully with less death wobble this time... tires at 20 now.

I'm not really worried about it since I'm not driving it a ton; no plates/insurance etc yet... so if I run 30 psi what can I do to get rid of the wobble?

Okay, that gives me more time to tune the truck. It's amazing what a difference hooking up the vacuum advance will do... the metal vacuum lines were all broken so I replaced the damaged section with regular vacuum hose. Where do you want to go Saturday and when? The Mt. Herman trail we took is just a trail that ends up at Rampart Range; not a lot of actual wheeling to do... mostly driving and avoiding idiots.

I'll take it out tomorrow and see what pressure works best; we know 30 doesn't work. I'm still wondering about the rear shocks; they just don't look quite right to me. I see cutting and welding in my future...  They're inboard but at the top they're on opposite sides of the shock mount bar... as in the left shock is on the front side of the axle and bar and the right side is on the rear. It seems off... I don't know.

Tonight I got the exhaust stitched back together and hatched a plan to mount the lights in front. I still need to get a coupler for the stainless header to the mild steel exhaust pipe, I want to be able to take the header off without having to cut stuff. I also found out I have Pro Comp springs; another guy on PBB posted pics and they have the same part numbers as mine do. Funny, the kid told me they were Marlin springs...  :bull crap: I wonder what else I'll find out later on down the trail.

Chopped off the rock "sliders", going to stick them on the bed to make anchor points/tie down bars. Got one light mounted up front; the other met up with a wrench and lost...  :_oops: , stuck the rear panel back on the bed, oil pan is still not leaking and I have to get some exhaust repair/wrap stuff as a temporary patch between the header and exhaust pipe. I should be getting the flanges next week-ish... then no more broken/leaky exhaust!!

And getting hyped up to wheel tomorrow; should be decent weather.
