Here's some pics of it; just a few of the outside, cage, suspension etc...

I plan on replacing the tails with LEDs to avoid them getting bashed on the trail; kind of like Volcom's got on his rig:

Rear:

Front-going to sell the axle since I have that locked/geared one:

Cage:

Mounting point, right front:

Side view (I'm not going to paint it):

If anyone sees anything that needs attention, let me know. Right now it's got floor jacks on the frame so the suspension is unloaded. I picked up a blue top Optima battery while doing an engine swap; it had about 2 volts when it came to me but after a few days of charging/resting/charging it's holding a steady 13 volts. I'm on the lookout for another top-shift case to start a dual setup down the road... that should be fun. After reading the "How-To" for 4.7 gears and duals I feel a little out of my league but I want to give it a try anyways. What's the worst that could happen?  :screwy:

Mounting point, right front:

The only thing I see are the floor plates on the cage.  I kinda worry about this pic.  Is it welded straight to the floor?  Did they use any kind of plate to spread the load through the floor?  I tried to put my plates over the body mounts to help strengthen the area.  I worry about your tube work punching holes through the floor if it was rolled.

Here's my passenger side A pillar plate.

The 1/4" plate is overkill along with the size of the plates.  Overkill on a cage isn't bad practice though

I think they're welded to the floor... and I thought the same thing: "That's not good". Heck, I can get steel plate at Home Depot for that; just cut off the bottom welds, slide plate under, bolt to floor then weld cage to plates, right? Should I get a few more tubes for the cage? It looks kind of... sparse, empty, small or weak compared to some others I've seen here.

I got some rebar... :hammer:

Been checking on parts for a dual set-up; here's the list so far:
2 cases, forward to top shift conversions if needed
4.7s with 23 splines all around
MC 07 (why is the MC 08 $300 more?)
crossmember
driveshaft work
busted knuckles and lost bolts.

Can I run 4.7s in both cases or is that just too low or a waste of gears and time? I figured out I'll have to chop the floor for this, modification is my middle name. I'm sure a ton of my questions will be answered once I actually get parts; I'm a physical kind of thinker, I need to have the stuff in front of me to figure it out. Since there's a bunch of late-model Toys at the yard, can two forward-shift cases be used as duals? I'm guessing yes but with a top-shift conversion deal.

mc08 is billet alum.
mc07 is cast alum.
duals with 4.7's in the rear case is perfect,  duals with dual 4.7's is a waste of $$$
need a top shift t-case?  ive got 2 for sale  $100 each

There is a thread on pirate about converting a topshift without the conversion kit. 4.7 in both is a waste, plus that gearing in the front will lead to a snapped input. There is a MC07 on sale in the denver craigslist from matt who was at CO4RJ in the orange hoodie, listing is on here too. I suggest buddbuilt for the crossmember or build your own

save some $$ and build your own crossmember.  frontrange offroad sells a centersection for a t-case crossmember, and so does my shop.

Not Runner-related but...
Been working on a 79 just to fix some leaks, tune it up and so on. I stripped out the top two bolts that hold the coolant/exhaust plate thing at the back of the head. While preparing to pull the head I noticed a 12mm bolt at the front where the dizzy sits. "Eh, it's probably not important..." I said. SO wrong. I snapped a chunk off the timing cover; awesome. Luckily I have a spare head and timing cover but it still sucks.

I've decided I'm going to put money towards the Runner instead of buying stuff for it... since I don't have it yet.

Damn aluminum...  :hammerhead:

I may have to rename this thread; working on a deal to get a built 84 regular cab truck this week... hopefully. It's got 4.11s and Detroits front and rear but I have that axle with the Lok-Rite and 5.29s.

Are Detroits better than Lok-Rites? Are the gears low enough to turn 37s easily? The truck also has a 4.7 Marlin kit; single t-case.

I should; if I don't get that 87 Runner my girl wants it if I get the 84 truck. She's really interested in wheeling and camping and all that so maybe we'll have 2 rigs there. I've been really anxious about this; in one day 3 people contacted me about my AllTrac. One drove it (he can't drive a standard very well) and the other was to trade for that truck. I'm leaning towards the truck; the owner says it's got 4.11 Yukons and the winch stays with the truck... :woohoo: Also the Corbeau seats will be replaced by some Subaru seats; no big deal.
I'm going to call later today and check it out. I'm itching to A) get rid of my car, and B) get a Toyota!

Toyota stock ratio's are 4.10's so it sounds like stock diff's with Detroits added.  Yes, Detroits are stronger than Lockrites.  Detroit lockers replace the stock carrier, Lockrite's use the stock carrier (like an Aussie locker or any other "lunchbox" locker).  Since it's an 84, it's a 22R (carb'd).  Stock gears, 37's, and a 22R is going to be slow and will be tough to drive over the mtn. passes to the trails.  Good deal on the 4.7 case, you'll be able to turn the 37's in low range.

If you looking to get 2 rigs, this sounds like a good start.

I'm going to check it out later today; it's way up in Erie. If we get the Runner AND that 84 I may stick the 84's axles under the Runner since I bought that 5.29 locked front axle... then get the Detroit 5.29 third from Josh for the 84. It sounds like having 5.29s/4.7 low should turn the 37s easy; maybe the Runner will get the 35s later on. I have an injection set-up that is itching to be put on something; need a computer and fuel pump though; also a few wires are cut but the main part is intact. Maybe a cam from somewhere too...

I'm going for it! He's bringing the truck down tomorrow and taking the Celica away. Now my girl wants to make the 4Runner hers... which is fine; 2 rigs are better than one.
As for the truck/needs:
d-shaft has rock rash/SUPER bad wobble from 30-35
doors aligned and half or tube doors built
real sliders (I still have that certificate from the jamboree)
EFI swap as far as I'm concerned
deeper gears
exhaust that goes past the cab  :D

But it has:
F/R Detroits and Yukon 4.11s
hi-steer
IFS discs in front
ProComp springs
flatbed
XD9000i winch
rock/reverse lights
Subaru buckets
spare parts
Pioneer radio
4.7 in the case
power steering
stainless header

More stuff will be added as I dig into it but I'll cross that obstacle when it gets here.

Hmmm. Last night I told him, "Thanks for starting my runner thread for me!" He has already hijacked it back and I didn't even get a chance to post on it! Probably just keep 'em together as he's doing a majority of the work, while I serve beers and polish chrome for my '64 t-bird. Although, I get to weld this time. yay! Guess the floor plates are as good as place as any to start.

It's here!!! So far I have taken off the KC lights, rear driveshaft, stickers and sorted out the spare parts:
2 rear shafts
short side birf
mirrors
2 clutch masters
new rear shoes/drums
Husky tool box
half door attempt
door glass
sliding glass
blank carrier
wiper motor
turbo gauge cluster
stock seat belts
and more stuff I forgot about. I'm going to sell some of the parts later after I get things sorted out better. At any rate it's warming up in the shop now while I stuff my face with victory pizza.

That's an old pic from his photobucket; it does have hi-steer on it now. I still want to stick that locked 5.29 axle under it and get that Detroit third from Josh.
