Well, i reckon(spelling?) its time I check in to the newbie post. I am not just new to the TOYOTA brand trucks but also new to to off roading in general. I have installed lift kits and dabbled with vehicles since I was 15 though so I am not a newbie when it comes to vehicles, granted Im hardly an expert when it comes to vehicles but i guess i can hold my own, but not really. This has got to be the most informative TOYOTA forum on the web hands down, trust me I spent many nights searching.

Anyway I have always wanted to own a moderatly stock looking truck with the potential of going further than the normal rig with just a few mods here and there. After doing some homework I fianlly decided that TOYOTA is the way to go if you want a rig that will go further and last longer. It is the philosophy of my life so why not go with a truck company that prides itself on reliability and longevity. I hate to say it because I am a true patriot but there is no way that I could have chosen any domestic brand for this project. Hey my family prides itself on buying only american brands, but for this project, and judging the criteria , an exception had to be made.

So without any more blabber from me I am now the proud owner of an 85 TOYOTA pickup that I am restoring from the frame up. Wish me luck and I look forward to getting most of my info for this build up from this forum not to mention parts from marlin crawler to finish my project.    Del

Welcome to the obsession, you made an excellent choice in vehicles to wheel in. When I first started reading I was thinking that you wanted to keep your mods to a minimum, that is until you said you are doing a frame up resto. Well good luck on your build and once you get started you'll just keep building it better and badder if that even makes any sense.

Addiction is exactly right! It is my crack cocaine! I just dropped $33,000 on a ford supercrew that will not go half the places that this current project will go and I do not plan on spending more than $8000 on this one. It is kind of a challenge for me to build a reliable truck that willl go just about anywhere(moderate at the most, nothing extreme)on the weekends and still be a d.d. with super great gas milage.

Rocksurfer

I've often wondered what else or where else I could have gone with all the money I've dropped into my various rigs, then when I'm out somewhere looking over a valley from high above all the tourists in the towns below I say this is why. Not everyone gets the views and sights we get when we are out wheelin'. Just that alone makes it all worth it, plus the wheelin' part is fun too. :driving:

Hey yall, I'm 16. I own an 86 4Runner. next year in school i have a senior project to do so I decided to put on a 5" SAS, 5.29 gears, spool in the rear, 9000lb winch, bumpers, and sliders. after that i want to do dual t-cases, and put an ARB air locker in the front. From what I've seen this is probably the coolest Off-Road site. I soon hope to see some one from here on the trail. :yikes:

hey, new to this site but owned toys for a while.  was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for overall axle lengths on landrcuiser(9.5inch gear) assemblys.  particularly how wide a fzj80 axle is compared to fj40?  was looking into e-locker conversion for my 66 fj40 (SOA 350 th400etc already done) and was considering buying a complete assembly to install insteasd of hunting down all pieces sep. that is if a fzj80 isn't way to wide for my 40!  any advice would be much appriciated.  p.s.  Thanks to Marlin for the quality high steer parts!  have reccommended them to many people since!

binderbart

Hello everyone,
Been wrenchin for 23 years. I"m a bonifided scout guy, but recently I acquired a 1989 toyota pickup for $300, I dropped a donor 22RE in it out of a 87. Found out about this site on another site and thought I would sign up and search your tech for some of the much needed answers I'm in search of.

Been working on this truck for the past couple of months and I've decided to trail ride it with our club to give the trail scout a break for some upgrades. I am a member and vice president of the tri-state stump jumpers, we dont do much rock crawling, just mostly trail riding in the deep woods of the bluff country in Iowa,Illinois, and Wisconsin.

Since I've gotten the truck I have swapped motors, installed a new clutch, changed out the rear brakes and rear axle seal, installed a exhaust system, welded in some mock up cab corners, replaced the rear drive shaft, and pulled the throttle body and gave it a good cleaning and a tune up.

I plan to pull the rusted bed and build a custom flat bed for trail riding. I have a set of new super swamper TSL's 32x9.5x15 ready to throw on when I trail ride, 31's for everyday driving. A locker for the rear axle is planned too. Well, I'm off to search your tech section. Good to meet everyone.

burnyota

hey binderbart,

good to see you here rather than the bindr bultn..yotas are fun and a quite a bit diff. than the scouts, as i am a a IH nut at heart, but found the drk side of Toyotas. WELCOME..
