Hey Josh I have a magnaflow cat left over from my 83 that I don't need if you want it i'll give it to you, it's still good.

crazykooter

Ya that would be sweet.  Tho its not needed very quickly.  Spec since my trans broke last night before I even got to the high lakes.
Sucks soo much since I pretty much put new everything on this rig so I wouldnt have to worry bout it.  The trans is still pretty new.......or was.
I will msg ya to see what we can work out.  Since my truck was also my dd I am not going anywhere soon.

crazykooter

Heres a funny but said note I just looked up.  I picked up my trans on 8/6/09 and when it broke was 8/6/10.  WTH exactly 1 yr later it died. :headshake: :rivers:

Here is a pic of the tooth i found on the drain plug.

CrazyYota

That sucks! I wonder why all these HDL52 are having problems? I got my stock L52 rebuilt three years ago and no problems yet?

Wow, that's not supposed to be there. I'm afraid to pull my drain plug again and see more of that kinda stuff. Everytime I pull it I get new stuff, no chunks like that yet though.

Little metal particles are normal wear.  Anything bigger then a needle head is not.  This piece is bout 1/2" long or more.  Since this is an HD L52 I need G54 gears to repair it.  I know its gonna take a week to get it repaired or longer so I am heading out now to pull the L43 I have here.  Not to fond of the side shift and not having a 5th but its better then nothing.
If need be ill tear my trans down and find the gears that I need from a g54.  Maybe I can see if Marlin has what I need there.  Wont know till tomorrow.

On a side note Marlin inspects all the gears before putting them in so in my case this gear could have had a micro crack that he couldnt see.  The bad part is that since the gear that went bad on mine is a main drive gear I was getting clacking in all gears.  4th just the quietest.  So basically I might have to replace all the gears.   Would be nice to find a cheap g54 near me.

Or maybe ill just find a L52 that I can rebuild.  I do wish there was a way to find out if the g52 or w56 has the same gears.

If you know a g54 gears will replace yours, im pretty sure a g52 and 54 are the same aside from 1st gear (g52 has like a 4.40 first or something.) just a thought.

Looks like I am gonna go pull my L52 and put in a L43 for a short term while I tear down my trans and replace the counter shaft.  Marlin is gonna send me the parts I need to fix it.  Should be fun.  :headshake:   Hopefully all the other gears are good.  Ill post pics of the tear down and rebuild/replace.

crazykooter

Here is a few pics of the trans after I got the top off.  Not good.  Ive only found 2 of 4 teeth missing.  Basically I am gonna pull it all apart later and make sure that the 2 gears are all I need.  The counter shaft gear right below the one you can see up top has 1 missing tooth.

I got the L43 put in.   The only thing that wont work unless I make a wire for it is the back up light which really doesnt bother me.  It shifts great tho the linkage is rather sloppy.  Still nice to have my rig back.  Going to finish tearing down my L52 to get a list of what I need to replace.  Should know by tomorrow.  Hopefully by end of next week ill have a working trans again.

crazykooter

Thought i would post a few little updates.  My truck is pretty much done.  I got a L52 off steve925 a week ago and installed it.  MUCH nicer to have that 5th gear back.  Trans is working good besides shifting a little rough into 2nd.  Syncros are a little worn is my guess.  It will last me long enough to finish rebuilding my HD.
I made some boomerang shackles for my front since the old shackles just didnt work right.  Last big thing I want to do is make a plate rear bumper to match my front.  Pretty sure I wont get it done until after the round up.

Heres the L52 Steve925 hooked me up with

Heres a pic of the roll cage.  I didnt get it painted before I installed it but it will work just fine.

jimbo74

wish i could go with you.... but work has other ideas :(

I made a trade today for my 1st gen rear axle without 3rd but with the chromoly shafts for this:
Tomorrow I am gonna weld the perches on and shock tabs.  I have a spare ifs rear so I am pretty set.  Just a little more work for me to do.
While I was at picknpull today I grabbed a set of F250 shock towers.  I think they look very clean compared to the hoops.  I need to finish the rock assault 1st. Then cut my hoops off and grind. Blah I hate grinding when its 100 degrees out. This pretty much makes my rig complete.

jimbo74

why is it rust colored? or does all the tg stuff come that way? ;)

Its primer Jim.  I primed it 1st and today I will the it all set up.  I am so frickin tired tho.  There is a ranch near me who have parties every sat night.  They have a live mexican band and it is LOUD as hell.  They didnt stop till 2 am.  This happens every sat night and all people around here have tried to stop it but there is no law against it.  SOO lame.

crazykooter

I finished up everything on my list for the most part.  I few little things that really didnt have to be done.
I hated the shock hoops I had on there so I cut them off today and put on F-250 towers.  Looks soo much cleaner.  Now I wish I hadnt cut the fenders out.  Oh well.
Also finished the rock assault install minus the e brake since the cable was too short for an ifs width.  All and all I think it turned out pretty good.  Now its time to go test it all out on the con.  I hope to hit the road by 3-4 but still have to pack and go to the store for food.   I am gonna try and get a bunch of pics this yr.

Here is a before and after the shock tower swap.

This pic is of the new axle and the shocks installed.  The angle is better then it was before.

jimbo74

your brake line looks a little bit short

other than that, looks good :)

Its just the angle.  Its an extended brake line.  There is prob another 10"s of line left for drop.  Too bad your a sissy air force puke who cant be my co pilot.

Looks like this build-up is going to be starting all over again.
I have a 79 sport truck that was going to get restored but its not gonna happen since I destroyed my 82.  I have been stripping everything off the 79 and getting it ready to paint.
Its been a chore but I am pretty close to sanding it down and laying down some primer.  Since the truck originally was the Toyota orange/red I am gonna stick with that color.
When I was pulling all the wiring out of the way I did notice some of the connectors are diff so it looks like I am gonna be doing some rewiring.   Nothing big tho.
I Figured since the cab is pretty much bare I am gonna make the trans tunnel a little bigger so I can bring my trans and tcases level with the bottom of the frame.
Anyone feel like doing some sanding ? lol Wish I had the money to put down some sound deadening mats.  Guess that will just have to wait for another day.  I am sure this truck will be much quieter then my 82 since the cab is very straight.
Forgot to add this thing had a 3" body lift on it which I removed.  You can see the extra long bolts in the front.  Going to see if any of the other trucks out here have better body mount bushing and stock bolts.
Here is some pics of how it looks now that its stripped.

Got a little update on what I got done today.  Been a pretty long day and I am glad its over.
I ended up pulling the windshield since I could see the rust under the rubber.  It isnt as bad I as I was expecting.  Just some wire wheeling and rust sealer and its good.
Plasma cut off the stock shock towers, torsion bar mount on frame and a few little other things I didnt need.  I also cut off my f-250 shock towers from my 82 and clean them up.  All I need to do now is weld them on.
I cant decide if I want to bother cutting off my 82s front hanger but I dont have another one nor do I have spring hangers.  I have some 2" square tube I can use but without hangers I am just not sure.
I prob should make some better bump stops and install them before it gets to cluttered.  Plus I need to get the holes drilled to mount my ifs steering box.  I will say having nothing in the way is soo nice.
I will update again tomorrow.  I should have it very close to being ready to paint.  If I wanted to I could have the engine and axles under it by tuesday but I am gonna take my time and get it all perty 1st.

The bed was full of junk so I cleaned it out and was surprised how straight it is.  Just the lousy black paint ontop of the factory red.

Jud

What's up with people painting red 1st gens flat black? When I got my 1st gen bed it had the original red in the bed then the outside was painted flat black. So I had to sand the whole thing down and paint it red again.

I rolled my truck at MCR9.  Damage was bad enough it needs a new cab and bed.  This is a short bed so I cant swap the bed over.  Just decided to swap all my running gear into this 79.  Steve925 has a cab and bed but I dont have the money for it so I am kind of in a bind since I need something to drive.  I have a complete 22R engine here which needs to be rebuilt and a good stock rear axle.  Really if I wanted to leave my truck alone for now and build this one I could but I would still need a trans and worst of all a front axle which would cost as much as steves cab.  I really wanted to restore this truck back to original and use it as a daily drive.

jimbo74

as long as the door opens it's all good, i have seen mroe beat up rigs driving around.... haha, you should see if you can find an old pic of when i rolled my explorer

Yesterday I finished putting the f250 shock towers in.  Its nice that I didnt have to cut the fender wells and still be able to run a 14" shock.
I also got my ifs box gusset plates and tubes in.  So all I have to do is mount the box.  Then I decided to try and knock out some of the little dings in the bed.
I will bondo it after I get my axles and engine in.  Which I am going to start today.  I really could use a hand doing it but no one is around so I am gonna have to go for it.

I did clean up all the stock a/c stuff and plan to paint it today.  Since this truck had it in there originally I figured I would put it back in.  Too bad winter is coming lol
