I rolled my truck at MCR9.  Damage was bad enough it needs a new cab and bed.  This is a short bed so I cant swap the bed over.  Just decided to swap all my running gear into this 79.  Steve925 has a cab and bed but I dont have the money for it so I am kind of in a bind since I need something to drive.  I have a complete 22R engine here which needs to be rebuilt and a good stock rear axle.  Really if I wanted to leave my truck alone for now and build this one I could but I would still need a trans and worst of all a front axle which would cost as much as steves cab.  I really wanted to restore this truck back to original and use it as a daily drive.

Anyhow its not a new cab its a whole new truck.  I am just swapping over my drive train and a few other things.   If this was a trail rig only I wouldnt even bother.   This truck will be getting an exo so I dont have to do this again.   Seabass at least I do my own work.   Have you ever actually used a wrench before ?

So far today I have the front axle in and box mounted. Rear axle is ready to go in.  Which I am gonna do after I take a break.  Then tomorrow I will be pulling my drive train, cleaning it up.   I still need to finish the engine bay.  I ran out of paint and with no wheels atm I have to wait on a friend to get it for me.
I do still need to fab up a drop front hanger.  I was thinking bout using some 3x3" tube and notching for the hangers.  If I do it how ive pictured it.  I should be bout the same lift as my 82 but much cleaner.   I want to get the thing mobile 1st then I can start tweaking it.   Ill post some updated pics a little later once the truck is sitting on axles.

I've built several over the last 20 years, wish I had the $$ to just pay a shop, I wouldn't be ashamed of having a rig built, but you think I should be???????????
last few have been traded for, though I put alot of work into them when i get them.

I bet if you had a toolbox with a trail-gear sticker on it you wouldn't of rolled your truck :gap:

crazykooter

Funny !!  At least you got me back finally.  Get that damn truck sold already geeze.

Here are the pics of what was done yesterday.  Was way too tired to deal with it last night.

Today I am gonna start pulling my engine and everything else out of my truck.   I really need paint so I can finish the engine bay.
Plus I need to weld on rear shackle hangers and put my better front shackles on.  Then maybe start working on making my drop front hanger.

ok, just want to be sure i got this correct...a whole new truck b/c you got a few dents in it and its a daily driver..
if the dents were the only damage, you prob could have hammered most of them out and got a new door if you couldn't get that straight...

or is it more just an excuse to build up the 79?

I think it's an excuse to build the 79. I have nothing against it. Just try and sell your old cab/cage/bed/frame to somebody because it's a good candidate to build into a nice trail rig for somebody to beat on. Or maybe even somebody to straighten and DD.

I wanted to restore the 79 not turn it into a trail rig/dd. So for me having to do this really sucks.   Here is a picture of the drivers side of the cab.  The whole cab was shifted towards the passenger side by an inch or more.  In order for me to fix this I would have to cut the rear pillar out and replace it with a new one.  The door will never shut right unless I do that.  It takes less time to swap everything over then it would be to fix my 82 and make it half way decent daily driver.  I am gonna just scrap the truck and be done with it.

You should see if anyone is interested in it first, like Jud said i bet it would make a nice beater for someone.

He is going from a longbed to a shortbed

That will be his biggest plus. He can push the front axle wayy forward getting it away from the firewall and not be too long. Then if it's not long enough for him he can push the rear end back and have a better departure angle.

82 locked,geared,cased,caged daily

crazykooter

Ya I remember you.  I am gonna keep the doors and make half doors out of them.
I cant really get rid of the 82 since I might be swapping vins.   Not 100% sure yet.  Heck I might end up getting a cab off steve and making it a poor trail rig.
Really my main concern is to get myself a road worthy ride.  After that well see.

save parts for when i get my 4runner ;)

What are you doing with the old cab?

crazykooter

I spent another long day wrenching on this thing.  I am at one of those points were you do a lot but it never looks like you did a dang thing.
I am not sure what I am gonna be doing with the old truck.  For the most part all it would need is a front axle, engine, trans and tcase to make it drivable.  I think I may put it aside and later down the road make it a pure trail rig.  At this point I am more concerned about getting this one finished.
I might have to swap wiring harnesses tho.  If I swap vins I need it to be 82 smog legal and none of the connectors work from the 79.
I took a few mins to pressure wash my engine, trans and tcases.  The engine paint is starting to show its age now.  Peeling a little.

hilux-1983

Lemme be 1st in line for dibbs on ol blue when all the legal stuff is done with. I'm looking for a long bed to start my build. That includes the cab, bed, frame etc....
Got any pics from the front and back?

crazykooter

Like I said I might keep it and turn it into a a pure trail rig later down the road.
I can say I completely wooped from working on this swap.   I managed to get the engine in today but still need to install the trans and tcases.
I also started on the interior a little.  Tho the interior wont take long to do.  Tomorrow I need to weld on the rear shackle hanger and then shorten my shackles to get the truck to sit at least an inch lower in the rear.  Then set up the shocks and e brake cable.

Not sure how I am gonna work the electrical.   The 79 harness has the wiring for the a/c compressor and the blower box but all the connectors for the smog stuff are completely diff.  Might have to get a wiring harness from an 82 that had ac or I will just have to make my own harness for the ac compressor and box. Then use my 82 harness for the rest.  Or I can just skip the ac all together which would be fine for this winter.

Either or I think I can get it running by end of the weekend.   Not sure if anyone even wants me to update this thread every day.  Ill post a few more pics today.

I say forget the a/c for now and get yourself back on the road  I didn't think you were gonna crank this thing out this quick.

Looks great bud, get the A/C in there but get the rig runnin first imo. I think im going to like this one more than the blue one. Are you going with the same red for the rest of the body?

Its going to be painted the factory red.  Which is really more of an orange then a red.   The paint I used on the engine bay was chevy engine paint which is the closest thing to the original color as I could get.  If its way off the color of the paint Ill be getting from a local paint shop then I will have to spray it again.
Ive sanded half the bed so far and fixed a few dings, but there is some bondo work to do since my buddies kid took a slag hammer to the passenger side of the bed.  For now tho I am just gonna get some coats of primer on it. Then when its running well ill spray it.  I need to get that done soon since winter is coming fast.

I think ill put the ac in and get it working later.
Here is a small list of things I need to do just to get it running.

1-change wiring harness out.
2-install trans and tcases
3-install gas tank
4-check fuel lines and install new hose for most of it.
5-install steering column
6-bleed brakes and clutch
7-finish hooking up all the wiring and vacuum

I think thats bout it for getting it running.  Then a larger list to make it road worthy.  I still need to remove the windshield from my 82.

Here is a link to someone selling a 79 truck.  Its the color mine is gonna be. As you can see its more orange then red but toyota called it red.
