project 4skinner
« on: Jan 07, 2009, 05:58:57 PM »
decided to start a thread on my 85 4runner before I tear into it. Bought the truck in early 2008 from the original owner for $1200, broke 170k on the drive home.

Little did I know that under all of the grime the paint and body were 100% perfect, this is by far the nicest 85 runner ive ever seen. Interior is super nice too, engine bay is spotless

So now it is my daily driver/camping truck/up north truck. All maintnence was done by toyota, all toyota or denso parts were used, every service done and kept up to date by the previous owners EXCEPT the timing chain.. First thing I did was put a steel rail kit and an optima red top in it. Runs great!!! then new tires ans 2.5in bs wheels. Ive taken it out a few times to crown king and sycamore, campin a few times, and drove all over the state of AZ without any fuss

My plans for it are:
High steer and diff armor #1 priority
Downey header/ dynomax muffler (no emissions)
Rears up front, chevy springs for rears (no more than 3in lift)
f/r bumpers, sliders, roof rack for spare
Warn winch
rock lights
higher amp alternator
on board air
f/r lockers (elocker or arb's)
dual cases/crossmember
33'' mtr's

Got some more done on the truck the past few weeks. Front and rear armor, downey header and made a full 2.5 exhaust w/dynomax muffler(little loud, but it sounds nice!), had my fuel injectors cleaned (runs MUCH MUCH smoother), changed the fuel filter, radiator, hoses etc.. Put some 88 rears up front with a sky shackle kit, got my 33in mtrs mounted in place of the 32in bfg's. Now I need to make a new front driveshaft and put my chevy springs in the rear and ill be set.. I also picked up an elocker 3rd for it too :) Gonna make a nice camping rig

No problem man.

For the rears up front I used the sky banana shackle kit, used the stock front hangars but pressed the bolts out of the spacers and replaced them with a set of rear spring bolts with a reducer. I put a 4 degree wedge between the perch and the spring and moved the axle to the front hole on the perches(you have to drill out the pass side, but the drivers side is already drilled). My front axle is moved forward about 1 1/4 inches. I added a leaf from a set of wagoneer springs I had to stiffen them up a little and help control axle wrap.

For the rears I bought the sky hangar kit for $120. Comes with perches, shackles, and shacle hangars. I took a ubolt kit off of a jeep at the junkyard for a flip kit. I havent put the rear together yet, but I have the 63's on my crawler and they work great. 4in or so of lift with a light back end, im looking for 3 inches of lift on this truck.

Ill get some pictures tomorrow if I can remember.. The 2.5 performs well, very noticeable on the highway at 3000 rpm and up. I was going to run 2.25 but it would have been an extra $2.00 a foot for the pipe and they didnt have all the bends I needed. I bought a 2.5 to 1.5 reducer that I stick on the tailpipe when im on a trail, it really helps with the low end torque.

Before the exhaust the truck felt like it was going to blow up at about 4200 rpm, now it revs freely to 4800 or more. Id say the header, new tube, muffler, cleaning the fuel injectors, and getting rid of the cat added 10-15 hp.

Finished the chevy springs out back. its been kinda slow progress as ive been out with my crawler every weekend. Still need to make front and rear shock hoops and get my hi steer on the truck. Im pretty happy with the lift so far, a little taller than what I was goin for, but Im going to cut the shackles down and drill some holes about an inch lower front and rear and use a different overload in the rear pack. The front axle still needs to come forward about an inch too, I cant stand rubbing tires!!!

This is my parts truck, efi for my crawler and tcase, rear end, ifs box, and calipers for the 4skinner. the 85 is definately too narrow with the lift on it, im going with the ifs rear and 1.5 spacers. also going to set the ifs rear up for my elocker and put it all together at once. cant wait!

I got a bit more done, mounted the rear shocks, moved the axle forward, got the highsteer on, and finished the lift. The truck drives GREAT and the a/c is better than my chevy! The truck drives better all around, much smoother ride, tight steering, tons of flex, and smoother at highway speeds, but it does dive in the front end when I hit the brakes hard. I might add a leaf to the pack and put the rear overload on.

hey man on your parts truck would you be interested in selling some stuff? Im in need of a grill, front bumper and trim piece for the radio, maybe some other dash pieces if you got them. oh and a speedo cable. I have a 88 extra cab I'm trying to get daily driver status just like your runner, unforgetnly not near as clean as yours was however I picked up in a trade for a 96neon that I paid 500bucks for so I can live with having to fix a few things

maybe work some parts trading if I have something you need...Im local and live in peoria
