Ok. Making progress. The paint was going well, till a few spots of primer just cracked and flacked off. I have to wait till monday and talk to the pros and the paint shop on how to fix it. Other then that it's ready to paint.

The most awesome thing in awhile. Got the rear brake line and fuel lines made up and mounted. I made them out of Stainless, #6 Supply and #4 return and EVAP. Everything was converted to work with AN fitting and not that weird metric stuff that came in. I also made my own clamps out of a old Urethane cutting board. Worked Great! still lots more todo but making good progress.

If you see it, its for sale.

Here are some pics of the primer failure. I stripped it, washed it, sanded it, cleaned it with wax/grease remover and then Isopropyl alcohol. Temp around 68 ish. This is a etching primer.

Im new to automotive paint and have no idea how to make this go away. I also cant tell you how much is sucks cause now i have to sand it all out and redo it. Body work guys, my hat is off to you.

The only thing I can think of is the surface was too cold in those areas and/or you got too close and make a thicker coat and it hardened and orange peeled.

But from what I have experienced... the metal was too cold and it it dried on you and didnt adhere to the surface.
Im guilty of the Orange Peel disease..... make sure the metal is not cold to the touch. 68* seems a little cold.

Yeah I got out and looked at it more. Took a little 120 grit to it. Found little spots all over that had poor adhesion and popped  I am so pissed. Now i have to strip it down and redo it all. I might just take it somewhere and just pay. All the work once again, body guys my hat if off to you.

You still have some oil in those area's, use clean white towels perferably new and be liberal with the lacquer thinner.

I've got to admit, this is a sweet build. To really have fun crawling a rig, though, you need a truck you won't have to worry about scratching and banging up a little on the trails. Are you even gonna wheel this thing?! It's looking too perfect!

Yea. This is more like frame off resto, not a trail truck.
Sweet meticulous build though.

Heh. Why have a truck you can't take in the mud. I mean my goal isn't to ding it, but if it's what it take to get to the top then so be it.

I'm the kinda guy that takes "in for a Dime in for a Dollar" to the extreme. After you do but so much, can i really just take a dump ontop of it? Ofcourse not.

That and if you take your time and build it right, it won't always be breaking and crapping out.

Once it's done, name the time and the place and we will see who holds back.

Very nice build man! It really is coming out nice. I was gonna ask how long you had to wait for your housings to show up.

So props to you Zippo, I mave mad respect for the work you've done.

It was a long time, If you look back at the build I post up about it, and you can look at the dates. Prolly 3 months ish? I'm still waiting for the rear axles themselves something todo with the heat treatment.

They even worked with me on pay. I payed 2800ish for everything in three payments. Totally cool and worked with me. I will buy from them again. Totally worth the wait.

I would blame the aircraft stripper. No way I will ever use it again.

toyyota

I'm a painter, maybe we could sort this out. If you used Aircraft Stripper it has a wax base and should be neutralized first with water (scrub with a scotch brite), and then a metal conditioner. Closely follow instructions on metal conditioner, It is a phosforic acid wash. At this point, do not wash with any solvents. An Epoxy primer (automotive grade) would be next and not out of a rattle can. One coat! You can apply seam sealers and body filler over the Epoxy. If you need to fill scratches and block sand a primer surfacer is next. Make sure its a two part urethane base, not lacquer base. Final sand should be 500 wet or a grey scotch brite. Final wipe down with wax and silicone remover with white cloth or towel, nothing else. Apply a primer sealer, urethane base, allow about one half hour, then your color coat. All of thease products like at least 70 degrees (metal temp). Good luck, you have an ausome truck.

zippo

Thanks! I'm thinking about taking it and having it blasted to get it back down to metal, clean it really good and try again.

The problem i'm going to run into now, is it's getting cold here, not many 70 + degree days left. The guy wants like 1200 at a local paint shop. I might just have him do it. But thats alot of scratch.

Where do you paint at? anywhere near Washington?!

I wish I were closer, I'm in Atascadero,Ca. I too did a total frame off restoration, on an 83. I soda blasted the cab and bed, sandblasted the frame, and did a EFI swap. Soda blast needs a good sanding or metal conditioner, sand blast go straight to Epoxy primer. I painted my truck a VW color, Salsa Red!
