I found I can use cruise control as low as 23 mph, I go through a lot of 20-25 mph neighborhoods so that really comes in handy and it does maximize the mileage as well.

It's funny how peoples driving styles will and do make a difference in mileage on the same vehicle. When my wife drives she gets about 16mpg average, when I drive the same vehicle after her you watch the monitor gauge start climbing I can turn her 16 into almost 24mpg in a single tank full.

Old Driving Style:
Floor it most of the time, windows down, freeway 80mph (2400rpm)
20.09mpg
2001 4Runner 3.4L V6

New driving style will be cruise control when possible [65mph max (1900rpm)], neutral when possible, slow acceleration never higher than 2000rpm, windows up

Tank from old driving style:

Yep, I'm pretty happy with it, expecially since it's supposed to get 18 highway.

I get just a touch over 5 mpg.  I haul ass everywhere I go...  You want your groceries or not?  :hahaha:

Makes no diff.  My old 4Runner gets 18mpg uphill, downhill, highway, city... probably get 18mpg falling from orbit...

So far I'm at the 3/4 tank mark with 100 miles, gas goes pretty fast after that mark though, so we'll see...

I filled up today on the fuel light, but have not check the mileage yet.  I'm planning to advance the timing soon so this tank will be the baseline.

I just filled up today. I went 240 miles & it took 13.70 gal.

240/13.70= 17.51 mpg.
That is driving 65mph-70mph.

When I filled up this morning I drove 55mph-60mph (no cruise control). It's going to take me afew days before I have to full up again.

So far I've got 160 miles and the gauge is between 3/4 & 1/2.

The hardest part about this is actually going 65mph. It's really pissing me off to go that slow... :hammer: I have learned though that I can coast in neutral from the top of the Altamont to the bottom, and from the top of Sunol Grade to the bottom without losing any speed.

and stay safe for gawds sake! These 'tips' from the hypermilers are just dang dangerous! Drafting a semi is never a good idea no matter how much better mileage you get.
all it takes  is  catching some poor driver thats been out too long,  thats tired  and more importantly STRESSED, once when i was extremely stressed, hadnt been home in 2 months,  running legal  which btw is harder on the driver,  i had someone  drafting me  and wouldnt get off my ass,  i finally  locked my trailer brakes up, they "de- drafted" REAL FAST

after it was over i told my boss i needed time off soon,  he said why,  i said cause stupid people are starting to 'get to me'
next day i was on my way home

I figured you'd testify to the dangers of drafting semi's when I posted that.

yeah, it gets really boring sometimes going slow but you do get used to it eventually, especially using cruise control, it's a lot easier.

I'm going to try using neutral more.

Thats a fun game...  I get a kick out of dedrafting assbags....  I've put many a prick in the stinkbug stance headed down the highway...  The California merge game is a hoot too.  Come down the ramp working it to get in with traffic and I'll let you in.  Come down like a prick expecting my truck to move and you'll be SORELY disappointed when I don't move and that guardrail comes up in front of you..  :gap:

Oh my truck gets crap mileage due to me.....  I don't slow down much, the truck will do 75 and I spend a lot of time in po po free area's....

The first two tanks on 87 are 17.7 & 18.5 mpg.  The second tank had more time on the highway so I'm not surprised to see it a bit higher.  I'm planning to run some Redline SI-1 through during this tank and push the timing a bit.  I'm planning to see how well I can do on 87 and then consider going to 91, again, and comparing the difference.

OK, my initial baseline results are in.  With just driving real easy, all in town driving, 90% with the AC on:

5 gallons
122 net miles
= 24.4 mpg

That is a bit lower than I was hoping I was getting.

New driving style results are in! WOW are you ready for this?! after driving the speed limit, with the windows up, using cruise control, easy on the throttle, coasting down hills, adding 18 minutes to my commute each way, I have gained 0.45mpg. I'm going back to 80mph with the windows down blazing through traffic with my foot in it. :shake:

My last tank(s) worth of fuel netted almost 5 3/4 mpg...  It was 5.72something.. Far better than I thought.
