put a drop light  about a foot above it  and  let it heat dry it
I've got a heat bulb, so I'll do that
Quote from: 79coyotefrg on March 17, 2008, 01:25:39 PMum  why didnt you just cut the pitman arm off  with a die grinder :dunno:
You mean just the pitman arm? I thought about it, but then I thought I'd screw up the shaft and spend too much time screwing it up. So, I banked on them being interchangeable, cut off the shaft above the pitman arm splines with a cutting wheel, and reassembled my franken-box  :sneeze:

No, I just put it on straight. It's about 60 degrees in the shop. Crap... What should I do now?  :dunno:

If itosent cure in about a week your gonna be starting over. Next time use hardner, mixed in at the proper ratio

Welp, I've been with Snoop since 5 yesterday afternoon, so 11 hours later I'm back at the computer...  :thud:

First, I organized my assorted toolboxes, and I whipped out the Christmas present jumbo rolling tool holder. It's made cheap, but it was a gift :santa: I lined some of the drawers with the non-slide stuff  :afro2:

Then the tinkering...
-Pulled W56
-Pulled rear heater and heater hoses from firewall back - completed fluid circuit by connecting them
-Rerouted fuel lines
-Put in Turbo Tranny (R151) after pondering lengths and whatnot
-Cut off stock e-brake trash from horse collar
-Rerouted fuel lines again after doing some measuring
-Put All-Pro "disc" on rear t-case output flange
-Pondered how all this is going to fit...
-For giggles, temporarily bolted up rear t-case
And that's how it currently sits...

I think I'm okay now with not having a body lift. It would be nice, though, as I need to figure out now how to move my gas tank, or get a different one (currently my gas tank is the low underbelly anchor - no es bueno)

I will have to fab up a new tunnel out of 12 or 14 gauge steel. I'm actually looking forward to that. I'll make more of a console on top of all that mess later

I think I'm still going to be able to do the remote shifter idea. Let me know if you have an extra top-shift shifter, base, and snap ring  :eyebrow: Otherwise, I'm calling on Collier again to save the day  :phone:

I'm going to have to fab up a a FROR-style crossmember and work-in my All-Pro e-brake kit. I really like this way of mounting it.

Me thinks that this person has a body lift, and I also think this is 4RunnerRick's from his first 4Runner??? I dunno  :headscratch: Regardless, this is currently the plan.

WHEELS
Ordered up 15x10 Cragar Soft 8s today. These will look nice with the TOR beadlock kit.

Pics will ensue tomorrow. I'm just happy to finally be making some decent progress! Woot!

Jordan7118

I'm going to cut up the tranny tunnel, mock up my t-case mount, and possibly mock up steering box. Get excited!!!

Body lift is out, so I think a new gas tank is in order after some stuff....

But, the biggest news - IT ROLLS!!! Well, theoretically. I haven't tried, plus I've got a flat... Hehe!

I also made a commitment to the flat belly...

I didn't plan on putting in the front axle, but it was a pleasant surprise  :disturbed:

I also discovered that the E-Brake kit goes on the outermost part of the rear case, leaving the FROR mount location available. This means I don't have to incorporate the two, which is awesome!

I had to cut up the e-brake kit  because the arm was too long and into the framerail. I also think I'll have to bend it / cut it and mount it lower.

Flatbelly is lookin' difficult but attainable. Plus, it's kinda fruitless unless I get my gas tank up  :screwy:

Next up is steering. I have some .5" sch. 40 pipe for through gussets, and I'll sandwich between two plates of 1/4".

I'll be working on Snoop tomorrow.

Lookin' for them comments, suggestions, anything really...  :eyebrow:

DriveTime

I am impressed Jordan. This is definitely getting my gears turning about my truggy project.

Jordan7118

Upon further review, I believe we've got a problem.

I was trying to imitate Rick's crossmember in Tuki...

...because it allows the t-case to hang lower than the crossmember tubing.

However, upon further review, his crossmember mount uses the same mounting as All-Pro's e-brake kit.

So, I can incorporate the two, which I question if the t-case will be up to the abuse  :dunno:

OR I could do like FROR does with their mounts and put it on the next t-case mounting (10 bolts further towards the tranny - next step of t-case)

Darn... What to do...

Also, my TOR beadlock kit came in. I'm neither impressed or disappointed - it is what it is. The anti-cone rings are a little small, and they should've made them a little bit larger in diameter. It looks like they'll just make it to inside the inner circumference.

Rims should've gotten here today, so COULD work on those. However, I thing other issues are in need of more attention. I plan to move the vale stems and also put some quick air-down valves in them. They'll be pipe-based plugs and valves, but they'll work for what I'm doing.

Jordan7118

Upon further research, FROR uses the same location as Rick's and the All-Pro E-brake kit. Apparently I'm weird...  :screwy:

Now, I need to figure out if I should try to mount differently or what. Word up...

You may consider ditching the factory skid, lifting the tank as much as possible, which is prolly only an inch at most, then building an invincible skid plate for it. You might be able to tuck it all up level with the bottom of the frame rail. I'm not shure how much the tank alone hangs down from the frame, so mabye not. :dunno: Just a little food for thought.

Yep, makin' a little progress.

Thanks, DTB, for the comment  :yesnod:

Michael, I'll be looking into the gas tank situation soon. I might do the gas tank from a Ford, as it's flatter and fits well behind the rear axle. I'd really like to get a small fuel cell, but I'm too novice to make the right call on hooking it up and ordering parts... !@$!#@#%

Glen and Michael, Casey is a friend of mine who currently has a big 'ole Chevy on Rocks and 46" Michelins. He's wanting to do something more practical, and he's planning to build up a second gen truck on Rockwells, as thats the axle he knows. He plans to cut the frame behind the cab and make it into a rockin' truggy. He goes to school here in Fayetteville, but he's originally from Little Rock where I think the buildup will go down. I'm not sure of all the details. He's a good guy, and I'm hoping he gets his truggy together so I can wheel with him... but then again, I have to get my crap together too...  :_oops:

I'm going out to the shop again tonight, so we'll see what kinda damage I can do  :eyebrow:

UPDATES...

Started foolin' around with the rims and beadlock kit. I really like the rims, and the beadlock kit is simplistic, which can be good, I guess...

Here's an easy way to modify your rims for offroadin'. I got the idea from http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=407665:
-Tap original valve stem for a 1/4" NPT plug
-Drill a valve stem hole (~7/16" drill bit) on the inside of the rim about half way between the outer lip and the center
-Drill a 7/16" hole and tap with a 1/4" NPT tap on the opposite side of the new valve stem
-Go to NAPA and get 4 pet thingys / drain thingys / jet thingys / stop thingys / thingy thingy thingy... They look similar to this

And boom, you've moved your valve stem so it's not vulnerable to trail damage and out of the way of a beadlock kit, and you've got a sweet and easy way to air down... So there ya have it...

I hope the anti-cone rings work, cuz they're on there... :hammerhead:

My buddy will weld up the rims because I'm not quite ready to put my life on my welds  :_oops:

Then, I moved on to getting the steering buttoned up. I cut up the radiator support to poke the little gear box through :shhh: It took me FOREVER to make the plates, and I broke my hole saw after the first hole  Out came the plasma to free hand the rest. The outside plate is 3/8" plate, and the inner is 1/4" plate. I don't think it's going anywhere. Again, my buddy, Preston, will be doing the welding.

I'm off to Kansas for the rest of the Spring Break, so no real updates 'til I get back. I'll be picking up a bender and a 38.5 SX, so I'm pretty pumped!!!  :woohoo:

Next on the list is cut up more of the tunnel to tuck some drivetrain... Ahhhh yea...

Post up your comments, and I'll see ya in a few days!

Looks like you may need a less than stock drop pitman arm. Why did you have the sleves stick through the frame on the outside of the frame? Do ya plan to grind it all smooth, for a flat surface to mount the box to?

I don't really have the money to spend on those. I know they're not ridiculously expensive, but I'd rather air down quicker. I can inflate where I'm going relatively quick. Superlift has a compressor on site, and that's where I plan to spend most of my time.

tilted down too much, that rear hole should have been higher  http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj168/Jordan7118/Miscellaneous/DSC00988.jpg
That thing as a pain in the butt. I got it clamped up there, and then it wouldn't work unless I tilted it down-ish... I think it'll be fine, though. If not, I'll get a less-than-stock pitman.

I left the sleeves out so I could finish welding them up and then grind down. Plus, the box didn't want to be flat mounted. This was early in the morning, so I guess I'll have to go back and re-evaluate.

I'm back from Kansas with a couple new things:

Picked up a tubing bender - it looks real nice...

Also was able to stuff a 38.5 SX in the gf's Civic. I get to clean off some rubber in her upholstery, now  :_oops:

What color should I go with on the outer rings of the beadlocks?  :headscratch:

What should I do differntly with the box? I had trouble getting it to come through the radiator support and still keep the body mount intact. Then I had trouble getting it to lay down. Piss... What to do now?  :dunno:

Ordered up bolts for the beadlocks - have a hookup at Fastenal  :shhh: Less than $30 for 140 bolts, 140 nylock nuts, and 280 flat washers. Gonna be fun mounting 'em up!  :cheese:

Still thinking about how to mount my drivetrain...  :smack:

you are looking for your drag link and tie rod to be as close to parallel as possible......

mostly to counteract bumpsteer..

actually....the main thing you are looking for is clearance on compression of the draglink to pitman to tie rod...

remember the axle moves back in the wheel well a bit...you might have to flex it to check
