Why are they so bored enough to give me a mudflap violation ticket? Thats just so gay.

It sucks to get tickets, but if Cali requires them and you don't have them...well. Make some removable flaps and smile when you drive by the next CHP.

I wouldn't say it's gay, unless the CHP skipped up to your truck in a pink tutu.

not to sound like im on a soapbox, but mudflaps is one of the things they actually will tag a truck for.. its required and should be, there are a lot of trucks out there and throwing up rocks is no joke... ever had to replace a windshield because some guy thought he was above the law and it spidered? it isnt that chp is bored, it is that your truck was illegal. if you chose not to run them, and get caught, its your own fault. sorry to be harsh, but its true...

it isnt a stupid law... there is a lot of damage done to vehicles by flying rocks and general crap on the roads.... feel lucky you are not driving a commercial vehicle, chp tags them a lot more... laws are there to protect people, not hurt them. if you dont agree with it, then go to somewhere where there is no law. this attitude is exactly why public lands are getting closed down... i think its stupid that i cant wheel, so im going to do it anyways.....

It's a law nonetheless. Some people think it's  stupid to have laws against driving drunk. If you were aware that you might get nailed, it was a chance you took...you got nailed. Again, make some removable flaps and move on.

Agreed...  you might not like the way they look, but flaps are required for good reason.  Even if paint chips and broken glass are covered by insurance, excessive claims (aside from being a huge annoying PITA) result in increased rates for all.

I don't see it as being different from any other law.  Choose to ignore it at the risk of being caught and penalized.  Been plenty of times I felt I was completely safe at speeds higher then the posted limit.  A few of those times, I got caught -- and paid the price, both in fines and higher insurance rates.  I didn't like it, but I didn't complain about it either.

Not a stupid law.  I just spent $150 on a windshield because a rock got flipped up by a 4x4 running MTs and no flaps.  There are a lot of laws I don't agree with but that one is sound...

I have removable flaps set up for my rigs so I can yank them at the trailhead

We don't have any such law here and I don't see a lot of people running around with broken windshields, then again we don't have much rocks either

I agree with you on chp sucks, but I did just replace a windshield in my dailydriver,  but not just 4x4s even cars have slung rocks up at me. Im on the road alot.  In my opinion yotas do look ugly with flaps but Its better than cracking a windshield,  Just imagine if you had just tottaly restored a project or spent 100k on a car and here one of us come along and bam cracked windshield,  Dont get me wrong I dont like it anymore than you but its better in the long run..  I have built a few removeable mud flap set ups.   But im on a suspended liscense so I cant chance anything,   Im behind you, but think it over.  ps its only a fix it.. after its fixed I think you only have to pay 10.00  thats not to bad.

Well, you could be close behind someone simply because you are ready to pull out & pass them.  Also, you can meet a truck that kicks up a rock into your path...   :ack:

A semi truck? or 4x4? Here Semi trucks and fool-size trucks are required to have flaps. Only times I have ever had a windshield broken was from dump trucks and semis...both had flaps...soemtimes i guess its just too late to see them flinging the rocks...

I had a windsheild cracked from a rock that came up from a Scion XB  :headscratch: those cars are low too.
But it is the law here in Cali, I ran removable mudflaps so I wouldn't get messed with. They are not that hard to make, and save the hassel of getting pulled over.

lilbuddy

OK so if my 4runner needs mudflaps shouldnt EVERY car? All cars can kick up rocks too..

Hey remember what I said?

And im not that dumb, I can look up the Vehicle Codes on my own and guess what, I already did that. All cars, regardless of flaps or not, still kick up rocks. Rocks still can bounce off the mudflap into the ground, bounce off the ground and hit a window. I have driven behind semi trucks WITH MUD FLAPS and guess what, I have a huge crack/bullet hole looking thing in my glass. Do i care, not really. :pokinit: happens and it has probably happened to a lot of people on here.

We have that law here in AZ. but only for vehicles commonly known as a pick-up truck. So, Jeeps, Blazers and the sort don't have to have them. Also, our law says they are to keep mud and water off windhields of other vehicles!! Says nothing about rocks, but that what all the cops say they are for. When I had my Blazer I was stopped about once a week for it. Till they saw it was not a pick-up truck. Even argued they "rocks" part with them. Funny enough, none of them seemed to want to let me look at their book. :shake_head:

yea, even with no fender laws here you can still get a ticket for spraying water, mud, snow, gravel, etc. onto another vehicle..i forgot what its called..something like "creating a hazardous condition for other motorists" or something stupid like that

:shake:  How many rocks do you people have on your roads.
Like many issues, the answer is -- it depends.  Around here our roads are often chip-sealed (spray emulsion topped with chips, or crushed rock).  The chips that don't stick are brushed off, but a lot remains for a long time.  Also, the paving typically ends at or near the edge stripe -- so when cagers straighten out the corners a bit (we have a lot of corners), gravel gets sprayed across the pavement -- which can also be a problem for bikers.

It's been mentioned that smaller cars can kick up rocks too, and of course that's true -- but it's a worse problem with bigger tires that are more exposed.  Not to say it's a huge problem, and I have no stats to fall back on. But I have had windshields broken by rocks, and I've seen the differences in the amount of gravel scattered by rigs with flaps and without.  :yesnod:

Yep, I get pulled over in the buggy every now and then, only because they run the plate and realize it's still registered as a truck!!! :disturbed:  But none of them has ever said anything bout the lexan windshield, no front signals.  :headscratch:
