This has to be one of the most unsafe cages that I have ever seen, but its your life not mine.  I just hope I am never around when you roll.

Couple of questions.

Have you reinforced the unibody at all.  I see that you cut the roof off which is part of the main structure.  If you have not reinforced the unibody then it will flex really crazy.  Also I do understand that this is a budget build, but why not wait and save up for tubing.  You are spending all the time with eh bends and notching.  Also shouldn't your safety and others riding in the vehicle be the main concern.

I know for a fact that if galvanized pipe is almost impossible to weld correctly and is very weak when welded.  The welds a brittle and can break very easy.  Also it puts off a horrible odor.

Maybe it will be strong enough maybe not.  I know on a hard roll it work hold like tubing or DOM.  Even on hard rolls DOM will not hold.

the unibody will be connected to the cage,  the b pillar was ripped out when it was wheeled which already hurt the stock support.  So we took them out and beefed up the b pillars.  the cage ties together in many spots and it is very sturdy.  The material has been tested previous to this.  I dont have time to wait for about six hundred or so dollars to get the rig going.  with the b pillar destroyed in the last wheelin trip it had to be fixed.  It is very hard to judge how sturdy something is online.  I do appreciate the constructive comments, but the safety part is what gets me.  I believe the cage is very sturdy in the fact that I have had 3 guys that have built many cages look at the cage in person.  I also have ground away all the galvy before welding which takes off the protective layer and makes it a steal to steal weld.  There is alot of weld time on this cage.  I have spent over 16 hours on it.  Dave has spent over 8 hours on it and others too. With stick welding it is not going to look great and a row of nickles. We have went thru the cage and taken out bad spots that shouldn't be in the cage.  We have fixed the bad welds by going in and breaking them loose and cleaning them and then re welding them.  Also if you show the pic of the b pillar with the wrench in it that is a small fix that I thought would be cool to put a tool in the build like occ bike that was made. It is structurally sound, and the crescent wrench is not even a support for the cage.   That is it.  Also I have and still am overbuilding the cage.  It might not be exactly like dom but with the overbuilding will hold just fine, again I have never rolled my jeep not saying I wont but in a hairy situation have always and will always give the option of my riders to walk the sketchy parts.  I believe along with others that it is alot safer now with the cage than with the sheet metal ripped off b pillar and pushed in b pillars.   Oh yeah we are the ones welding it and when we are done welding it cant break the welds when we are done without heating up the metal or cutting it off.   So I think that covers the safety issue.  I DONT RECOMEND WELDING GALVY WITHOUT PROPER VENTALATION!! I hoped this answered your questions.

This is so silly, here's the lowdown on welding galvanized/zinc coated pipe. If you have to weld galvanized steel you must remove the coating, the reason for this is if you don't the zinc will combine with the puddle and will make the weld weaker and subject it to cracking. From what I've read here this has been done so the welds will be just fine. Now as to the strength of pipe over tube it is true that tube is and will be stronger but if you over build it it becomes stronger by default. The main reason for using the tubing over pipe is it is stronger at a lighter weight and that's it. If you are not concerned about the extra pounds it's not big deal. Now I have a question for the people that weld in round tube over square tube, square tube is much stronger than round so if you are so concerned with you own safety why are you not making your cages out of square tubing? Next question do you wheel with people with no cage at all? I think what they've done is much more safe than no cage at all. Of course I do wheel without one so who'd worse me or them? Now leave these guys alone and let them play with thier toy, it's thier choice and from what I see they will walk away from even a hard roll, I've seen race trucks come back with the whole roof colapsed and the driver walked away, and that's the whole point.

Oh and you should weld with a mask in all situations galvi or not and have a big fan to blow the fumes away even in well ventilated areas.

I haven't seen anybody given him crap.  I have seen people concerned about safety, that is all.  Has it led to debate, yes.  There is nothing wrong with that.  Actually, if anything, people have learned more about the subject from the debate.  Very nice link to eatabowlofrichards.  Now that is the Marlin Crawler way isn't it.
