Fatality at TinBender Jambo
« on: Apr 28, 2007, 06:07:17 PM »
I just got home from the Tin Bender Jamboree. I heard early this morning from some folks that there was a fatality last night when somebody rolled their truck on the lakebed. <edited to remove incorrect person's name>. I believe his name is Dave and worked at Schaeffers. I saw a highly modified toyota (black I think) on full widths being taken out on a flatbed with 3 CHP cars following while I was driving down Boone Road. I assume that vehicle belonged to whoever was involved in this tragedy.

Anyway, it's a very sad situation and my thoughts are with his family and friends.

If thats true that really sucks, whats up w/ fatalities and rock crawling this year?

This is the 3rd or 4th one i've heard of, this is a good lesson to everyone. Even if you have the biggest badest rig on the trail DO NOT neglect safety guys because its your life that your toying with!

This is the exact reason why i'm going with 5 point harnesses in my truck and have it wrapped in tube.

The story I was told was that the vehicle was involved in a high speed rollover on the lakebed and had nothing to do with rockcrawling at the time. The driver only had on a lapbelt according to what I was told, and the force of the roll resulted in a broken neck - again, this is all just what I was told.

Incredibly sad turn of events. It sure put a heavy tone on the days activities for me

Thats basically what happened. I was talking with one of the guys that was first on the scene. He said it looked harmless, he was just out on the lake bed messing around and flipped over.

was alcohol involved? its usually the people that decided to just mess around in a motor vehicle that end up killing themselves or others. as for the seatbelt, only the lapbelt? was the vehicle equipped with more restraint than that? either a shoulder strap or a harness?

Not sure, he said it didnt seem like he had been drinking. as far as the belt I guess he had a 3 point harness but only the lap belt was on him and it was loose. I dont know the exact details!

Is Dave a young guy in his early 20's?

Sorry for the intrusion. I never pop on Michaels boards or under his name (this is Mrs Crash) he's at the hammers right now. I heard about this thread and wanted to pop over and see what was being said. He did call me tonight and said that someone died on the lake bed. I'd like to hope that as well as we know Dave, he would have mentioned that it was Dave. I'm hoping that it's just rumor and dave is ok. I left a message for Dave so hopefully someone hears something soon.

how high speed are we talking about? i had a multiple roll accident with my truck last august.....  on the pavement, involving smacking into a cliff wall doing 50 mph (thats pretty fast isnt it)? i had my stock seatbelt on. the police said if i hadnt worn my seatbelt i probably would have gotten thrown out of the truck and thrown over the other side of the cliff into the creek 20 feet below and they probably wouldnt have found my body

I pulled into Boone Rd. as his truck was leaving on the back of the flatbed following 3 cop cars and all the Pirates. It seemed odd and I found out what happened thru Hyena when I pulled into camp.Sucks to hear man and allthough I never met Dave personaly I still feel horrible,he was one of my Myspace friends when I had my old account.I was bummed out the whole weekend just knowing a fellow wheeler had lost his life doing something I love doing  .For those asking if alcohol was involved and how fast he was going,my understanding was that he was sober and was doing donuts and happened to hit a bomb crater, for those that have been to Johnson Valley you may have seen these things on the lake Bed.At last year's Bender Jambo my buddy hit one going full speed on his quad and broke his femur and is finally recovering...There was also a motorcycle accident this weekend that I don't know much about exept that the ryder was not wearing a helmet and I heard he died in the hospital(but not sure). Please everyone, let's let these unfortunate incidents be eye openers for the rest of us,a friend of mine past away last month too while wheelin' and I learned more on how it happened this weekend. It was a SIMPLE mistake and he was a long time wheeler. We need to make sure we take full precautions before doing ANYTHING.There was 4 rollovers that I know of this weekend including the one that 4DEES and I were in and in one there was a person riding in the bed of a truck and luckily walked away.
