83 Build
« on: Feb 03, 2007, 07:03:17 AM »
Well, I guess I figured it was about time to post up some pics of a build I've been working on for about a year. I hope to have this thing on the trails by April this year. There's a lot of Marlin parts on this rig so I thought this was the appropriate place to post these pics. This has been quite a learning experience for me as I have done all the work on this rig from re-building the engine, building the axles (which I hadn't done before), all the fabrication work and spraying the Durabak bedliner on the interior/exterior of the truck.

Here's a few specs on the truck...

Marlin Trail Flex 4" suspension system with all the associated goodies.
36" Iroks
1989 Chevy 4.3 V6
TH350 Tranny with Adavanced Adapter for the T-case.
Dual Toyota Cases with Marlin Adapter and 23 spline inputs on both cases (also from Marlin).
Marlin twin stick on the rear case.
Longfield 30 splines in the front along with a Detroit and Yukon 4.88 gears.
Yukon spool with same gears in the rear.

Still to come:
Tubular flatbed/exo-cage, front bumper, tube doors and seats.

The beginning....once I sold all the Smitty built bumpers/sliders and tires I had $50 in the truck.

Pretty much as she sits now.

Actually, that's what they called Safety Red. I think when I snapped those pics the sun was going down and made it look a little orange.

Oh, and thanks on the compliments....I'll get some more pics posted once I start getting some of the bed/exo/bumper stuff going on.

Actually, Norman is just south of Oklahoma City in the central part of the state. We do most of our wheeling in the southeast though.

I love the truck! There are not many people who have lined trucks. When the color starts to fade it will look like crap though. Do you have to go back every year or so to re-color it? When the shine gets faded you can spray no touch tire foam on it to bring back the gloss.

Why did you remove the defroster? Do you not wheel in the rain? Are you leaving the window glass out?
If you still have control you aren't going fast enough

Actually, I still have the bed....but it's got a bit of sheetmetal cut out of it that I used for tubbing the wheel well and fixing the rust of course.

I'm really hoping that it doesn't fade. I used Durabak liner on it that has UV inhibitors in it so hopefully it won't fade too bad. As for the defroster, I'm probably going to put in one of the aftermarket heater/defrosters in it because I do like to wheel in the rain and winter time. Oh, and the glass will be going back in. The old windshield was cracked pretty bad so I just ripped it out and I've got the factory sliding back window to put back in as soon as I find the new seals for it.

Actually, Durabak has like 15 different colors of liner. I started to go with a bright yellow they had but decided I wanted it to match my Tacoma that I will be pulling this thing to the trails with.

Thanks....and I've seen the buildup on your truck before. Very cool rig. I just love the old Toys myself. I think the 1st gens are my favorite body style....of course that's why I ended up with this one.

I got the wheels to look like that with my trusty little pressure tank sandblaster. I was going to clean them up, but I kinda like the flat finish on them.

What is required to spray the durabak liner? I take it you did it yourself. Is it something anybody can do themselves?

Actually it was a lot easier to do than what I was expecting. Of course, starting off you need to do the prep work which is nothing more than giving it a good sanding with 60 grit to get a rough surface for the bedliner to grab hold of. Then you need a good compressor and an undercoating gun which I got from Eastwood for under $20. I shot mine at around 60 psi and that seemed to work really well. Here's a link to the gun I used. http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=1126&itemType=PRODUCT

Awesome. Who sells Durabak? How much does it cost and how much did you use? You sprayed the inside also right.

Well, I ordered mine from here: http://www.nonslipcoating.com/
The price varies a bit depending on color....anywhere from 79.95 a gallon to $129.95 a gallon. Yeah, I sprayed the inside also. It took a gallon for the inside and just shy of 2 for the exterior.

This was my old bedlined tow rig  I loved the Rhino lining but sold it when gas was really high and bought a diesel. Now diesel is high and I wished I still had it. That big block sounded nice.

That Chevy looks pretty cool with the bedliner. My youngest son has an 89 Toyota 4x4 that I think we will be doing the same thing with in about the same color.

Make sure you post up when you spray that thing. A step by step how to thread would be awesome. I think a lot of people would like to see how to do this.

What did you use to prep the surface, 60 grit by hand or in a D/A?

I'll be sure to do that....although it's probably going to be a little while before we get to that point. We have some motor issues to take care of on the 89 first.
I actually used a D/A where I could and then just hand sanded in the hard to get to parts. On the interior I actually used my sandblaster....that was a lot easier than sanding.
