It's in the $3.59-3.61 range today...10 cents off at Fry's (Kroger). Unlike Joisey...we pump or own.

That's what I tend to forget when I go to California or Washington.  I'll be sitting there with people looking at me like I'm crazy, then I'll remember that I have to pump my own.   :smack:

I get the exact opposite when I head down into Oregon.  I get out to pump my gas and I about it tackled to the ground for grabbing the pump.  But if I'm driving the diesel or my bike they have to allow me to pump it as long as they are standing there.

But it really makes me mad when they close down at night because they don't have anyone to pump the gas.  That's gay when your driving through Oregon in the middle of the night.

KDXSR5

So I just learned that there are places that wont let you pump your own gas :screwy: Is this in Oregon only?

I believe that there might be one more but I can't remember.  It is a stupid law.  The gas stations have to make more revenue to pay someone to go pull the trigger.  It sucks for the people who need gas and the stations selling it.

In all honesty I don't mind someone filling my car/truck with gas if its a rig that I don't mind getting scratches on.  But when i pull up and the stupid gas station attendant unscrews my gas cap and just lets it clank and rub against the body is pi**es my off.  Usually its some 16 yo kid who doesn't give a crap and then he they lean up against the car like they own it while they're filling up my rig.

OK I'm done ranting.  I've just had a few bad experiences.

That's retarded. :shake:

I agree. I think the Jersey legislature did it to lower liability (have a professional pump you gas) but, it could be to stop drive offs. I was up there last year and little old wino almost jumped on me to stop me from pumping my own.

Interesting article.  Thanks for finding that.

Like I said before I pump my diesel usually and they allow that.  He didn't mention that but I know that the stations down in oregon have screwed up quite a few trucks because they put gas in them.  I wonder how many stations have lost thousands of dollars fixing that?

KDXSR5

If I am going... lets say hunting for example, am I allowed to fill up a few 5 gallon gas cans for the ATV all by myself? What if I put the gas in the cans, then fill my truck with the gas from the cans? Am I allowed to fill equipment and such that is in the back of my truck all by myself? Or will they make me unload the equipment and then have them fill it? I don't understand why they don't want me pumping my own gas, and yes, I read the article, but it still seams kind of pointless.

From what I understand its because people are absentminded when they fill their cars.  Like when you hear stories of people driving away with the hose still attached to the car and the station catches on fire.  Those kinds of things.  Its from a safety standpoint.  But how is it that the 48 other states are unsafe and the 2 who don't pump their own gas safer??  You got me.

Now in terms of you filling up your ATV... yes you can fill it up as long as they are standing there.  I fill up my buggy, but they stand there while I do it.  They've also let me fill up my own gas cans but again they are standing there.  You actually get used to it after a while.  There's just the few instances where it makes me mad that they are pumping my gas.  Like scratching my vehicle.

Dunno about Joisey, but I understand Oregon's prime justification was low-level employment for a state whose population got hammered by logging cutbacks.  As to safety, yes there have been a few drive-offs with the hose attached but there are cutoff valves that prevent fuel flow or fires.  Never heard of a fire caused by a ruptured hose...

I'd guess non-paying drive-offs are a bigger concern, but that's easily addressed with credit card (or debit card) pay-at-the-pump -- or paying the cashier first if using cash.

Frankly, I think it's a dumb law.  I hate having some nose-picking ex-con or careless kid touch anything I own, and I am quite capable of pumping my own fuel, thankyouverymuch.  Been doing it successfully for 43 years or so -- a few years more if you count walking to the station and filling a glass (yup, glass!) gallon jug for my lawn mower...   :outtahere:

I'm not saying that I think thats why its there thats what someone told me once who lives in Oregon.  I told them the same answer you just said.

Sometimes I get a bit too worked up over the whole "you are not allowed to pump fuel into your own vehicle" law.  I love Oregon, just can't stand somebody telling me I cannot do something I am perfectly capable of doing myself...
